DEJA VU'?Green Arrow TM searches for the thread that ties together seemingly random killings... Black Canary TM unravels the twisted trail of drug trafficking... A mysterious emblem of a tangled N snags both strands of investigation. Are the heroes' tasks separate skeins or interwoven Lines of Death?

INTRODUCTION:Oliver Queen is the Green Arrow. Emerald Archer, hunter of those who would oppress, threaten, kill, or be a scourge on those unable to defend themselves. Where the law fails, the Green Arrow will try his utmost to see that Justice is served to those who think they are beyond the laws reach. This night, the Green Arrow is on his usual nightly patrol. Moving from rooftop to rooftop, crouching in the shadows, looking down from on high. Watching. Waiting. Ready to save lives, stamp down on crime, ready to be that equaliser in the eternal struggle of the decent against the cruel, corrupt and evil. OOC I'll keep dice rolls posted in the OOC style but NOT reveal to you the why or what if the dice roll is meant to be hidden...
Using my House Rules, I'll try to break down the process to make it easier to follow:
Int 5 + Roll(2d10)+5: 2,2,+5 Total:9 (DOUBLE!) plus Roll(2d10)+9: 6,9,+9 Total:24 (ACTION VALUE TOTAL) vs
Opposing Value 4 + Roll(2d10)+4: 7,4,+4 Total:15
9 difference is +4 Effect on the Red Column...
Will 8 + 4 (12 total) - Resistance Value 4 = 8 RAPs. Success.Green Arrow is crouched on the roof of the Hotel St James (marked on the following map with a 'C') on Orchard Street in Seattle. Across the street are an array of buildings mostly catering to late night clientele. Oliver sees a man in black clothing, his complexion either black or painted that colour, crouching on the roof of the four storey building near the alley (marked with an 'A'). From the way the man holds his body, he may be armed; it's impossible for Green Arrow to tell at this distance in the darkness. The map: Green Arrows heart rate rises a touch, then dips again. He's been here before. Countless times. A veteran in a war no one wants to know or read about because their lives are easier that way. Green Arrow fights that war every night and though he can't be sure, it *might* be an opportunity to fire the opening shot before someone else does and a life is cut short... OOC As per the DC Rules, you have a Dice Action (roll to hit etc), a Move action and a non move/attack 'simple' action that you can perform if you so wish. For instance nocking an arrow to the bow (simple) shooting the arrow (dice) and jumping from the roof (move). If you can label the actions like that it will make it easier to see what you plan to do.
Green Arrow to act...

OOC: The stats for Green Arrow in the module do not include Thief: 8. Did the original set not have the Thief skill and instead use something else for Stealth? I feel that Green Arrow should have a Stealth subskill. What do you think?
I'd like to use it now to stealthily make my way to the man in black clothing.

OOC I agree. It's his thing. That seems like a massive oversight. It may affect things in the adventure but I'm sure between us we can sort that out.
Shall we use the 3rd Edition of the character? Less capable in a couple of areas (Dex notably) but more rounded. And with new improved thief!Green Arrow moves with the practised skill of one who has remained in the shadows for most of his adult life...And then he pauses momentarily as a hoarse scream rings out in the street in front of the 'Luv Hotel' ( OOC where the man Green Arrrow spotted is on the roof of) His eyes ping to the spot and see a man with a torn shirt falling to the floor with blood trailing from a back wound. Another man, face hidden by shadow and a panicking sidewalk traffic of people, turns to run down the alley along the side of the hotel but not before dropping something at the feet of the fallen victim. A small torn plastic bag, that even from this distance and with poor streetlighting mixed with glare from neon signs, looks like some kind of white powder. It spills onto the street. Green Arrow now has THREE potential targets... The man on the roof, armed or otherwise. The man who has just seemingly stabbed the victim and is making his way down the alley. The man who has been stabbed and fallen face down on the floor in a widening pool of blood. He may still be alive, and it might still be possible to save him! This nights patrol has already exploded way beyond the usual 'stop a mugger' or 'keep the peace'!

OOC: The new stats are missing Military Science/Tracking: 7, which I think will be a problem, especially because I'm going to need it. How about we just add Thief: 8 to what came with the adventure?
Move Action: Green Arrow rushes to the fallen victim. Dice Action: He tries an unskilled Medicine (First Aid) check to treat the wounds. Simple Action: He asks the crowd to call 911 or come help if anyone is skilled in first aid.
OOC2: Are you okay with resolving my rolls until I get a hang of the rules? For the unskilled dice action I'm guessing I just roll a 2d10 so: 0_4CQCQ_1-101-101-101-10

Tables: OOC Update. No problems with Military Science and Thief. We'll go with the adventure stats + Thief 8.
With regards rolls/mechanics I will sort that out and explain it as I go. If you want to use Hero Points you can 'buy' extra dice to roll to 'make your own luck'. However, with only a store of 30 points it's probably best if you save them for last ditch defence, in my opinion. That's your call. SKILLS do the points of Hero Points for the most part, adding extra dice to every applicable action and increasing your chances of a better roll. No guarantee but that's how I preferred to take away from the 'I have a massive mountain of HP so all my stats are doubled every check' that the current system brings. Again, in my opinion... Green Arrow climbs down the fire escape to then charge across the street and ignoring the blare of horns of taxi drivers...OOC The adventure states a Dice Action to get off the roof but I don't buy that. Jumping off, sure, but if simply moving down the fire escape I'm not going to make a roll (with an OV/RV of 1/1 no less!)Crouching down next to the victim as people shy away, GA also hears a shout of "Hey,you! Murderer! Come back here!" but he's more concerned with the victim. The man is in his late thirties probably. The wound is strange. Aside from all the blood, which is a catastrophic mess, there seems to be some kind of pattern to it. OOC Green Arrow Unskilled Medicine check Int 7 + Roll 11= 18 (Acting Value Total) vs Damage taken by Victim 7 + Unskilled use 4 + Roll(2d10): 2,9 Total:22 (Opposing Value Total) FAIL.Pressing his hands to the wound, Green Arrow curses his lack of medical training as the mans life blood pools out under his body. "CALL 911!" he shouts as he hears a last, rasping breath from the body under his hands. The man is dead.OOC Green Arrow is surrounded by people on the street in a ring around the body. The man who stabbed him has run down the alley at the side of the Hotel. The man on the top of the hotel is out of GA's sight at this time. Somewhere he can hear the screech of tyres. Elsewhere a distant siren can be heard. Whilst he is a vigilante Green Arrow is at least familiar or competent in standard Police Procedures. Leaving the scene with blood on his hands may cause him serious problems with his current working relationship with the Police.

Oliver failed, but he believes trying to save this man's life was the right call. He's an accomplished tracker and can find his assailant later, especially if he can make some sense of the clues left behind.: A torn plastic bag filled with white power and a wound with a definitive pattern to it.
Move Action: Circling the scene of the crime, so no one messes with it. Dice Action: Detective (Clue Analysis) check to treat the wounds. ct2f_k|Q1-101-10 and since Detective is 4, do I roll 3 more dice? 1-101-101-10 but we add just one of these to the total? Simple Action: Telling nosy civilians to stay back from the crime scene.

OOC The Skill working with rolling extra D10s was right. Extra three dice... except with double 10 there's no need to worry about it! Total roll 39!
Using INT 5 as the AV/EV we have...:
Int 5 + 39 (rolled) = 44 Acting Value Total (AVT) vs OV 3 + Roll(2d10)+0: 3,2,+0 Total:8 Opposing Value Total (OVT)
On the red column a difference of 36 means +8 Effect (boosting from 5 to 13). 13 EV - 3 RV = 10 RAPs!The Howl of sirens isn't quite enough to interrupt Green Arrows analysis of the scene and the victim "POLICE! LET ME SEE HANDS!" shouts a cop from behind GA. People began backing away, hands up. More cars screech up. The police are here in numbers and they are packing heat. Shotguns and handguns train on Green Arrow but a sense of their attitude doesn't make him feel a target. More they are securing a scene and GA is in the middle of it. More sirens. Medical help, though this man is beyond it. More cop cars. There's no getting out of here without bullets zinging about, and the civilians would be caught in any crossfire. Looks like Green Arrow needs to go for a chat with the cops..."You need to come with us GA." says a cop. He's older, wiser, and familiar to Green Arrow who's seen him work the streets a number of times. "Don't worry, it's procedure. What ain't procedure is leaving you with those pointy sticks you carry. You keep hold of em for now." he says as the police spread out, taking statements and gathering a picture of what happened. The cop looks at the body. "Too much mess and I don't see no arrow sticking out. I may only have stripes but I don't need to pass the detective exam to know you don't work this way. Come on, you can ride in my car. Don't want any rookies with itchy trigger fingers making this messier than it is..." GA goes with the cop to Seattles Main Police Station... END OF PART ONEOOC I'm not railroading by the way, this is the adventure insisting/prompting!

PART 2There are glances towards the green garbed figure but enough of the cops around here are wise enough and smart enough to accept help from the masked man. They are overworked, underfunded and at times, under siege. The drugs industry in this city is destructive, massively well funded and seemingly above the law. Everyone in the Police Station knows someone whose lives have been touched or ruined by drugs or the crime attached to it. They know Vigilantism is wrong, undermines the rule of law and goes against everything they were trained to do. And yet... and yet Green Arrow is their ace in the hole. When the law falls short or hits a hastily erected legal brick wall that sees bad guys smirk as they walk away from the court, Green Arrow and others like him offer the boys in blue the hope that they WILL get their man, sooner or later. Not everyone thinks that way, but enough. "In here." says the cop, pointing to the interview room. "Lieutenant will be here in a moment." The door clicks shut behind. Green Arrow glances at his reflection in the one way mirror. He doesn't get long to reflect on the man staring back. Now the hunter must face society's officially sanctioned man-hunters.The familiar figure of Detective Lieutenant Wayne Cameron* enters the room. "You again!" Cameron exclaims. "First I have another serial killer, and now I've got you to deal with. Funny thing, isn't it, how you always turn up at the same time I've got a fresh corpse?*" The balding detective looks tired and drawn, but that's not going to stop him from a thorough interrogation of his suspect. Cameron may be impressed by Green Arrow's reputation, but the mans still hasn't reconciled that heroic posture with the suspicious killing of Jankowski* several months back. (OOC *Green Arrow interacted with Lt Cameron in 'The Longbow Hunters' series which is a prelude to this adventure, by a matter of months. Jankowski was the man who tortured Black Canary. GA ended his life with an arrow in the landmark tale. The police have not been able to pin it on him.)

OOC: Nice job with the comic panels! Thank you!
Green Arrow whispers to Cameron in a low voice. Oliver can't rule out that the perpetrators behind this crime could be some of Seattle's own law enforcement, looking for a way to make criminals pay who too frequently slip past the long arm of the law. To this end he tries his best to share what he knows with Detective Cameron and only Detective Cameron. "I think I may not be the only vigilante on the streets of Seattle. This job appears to have been done by a group working together, possibly three. One staking out the cocaine dealer from a rooftop, a second in a getaway car, while a third with military training did the deed. Have any other bodies with a boxed 'X' shaped wound turned up in the morgue? Or possibly a wound shaped like the letter 'N' or a 'Z', if the assailant was interrupted in the midst of the attack? Was this victim or any other recently apprehended by the force and later released?"
Move Action: Keeps his mouth obscured, so it is difficult for anyone behind the one way mirror to read his lips. Dice Action: Detective (Police Procedures) to share his suspicions to Detective Cameron without allowing any other officers overhearing the conversation to catch on. Simple Action: Obscuring his mouth and whispering as best he can to only share what he knows with Cameron.

Is that roll a 14 (5+9) or a 16 (9+7)? Or can I take a risk with an 8 (4+4) and roll two more dice because that would be doubles?

Post by roxolid on Nov 16, 2019 12:06:47 GMT -5
OOC 9+7 is pretty good but the smart money is on 4 + 4. Skill dice are your call. Roll a whole bunch of them, pick two and discard the rest. If the first two roll double 1 (or trigger a burnout etc) you use them regardless of how many dice you roll. Regardless of skills or HP, you only ever roll two dice on any double follow up rolls...
