Johnie the Homicidal Maniac: The Director's Cut TPB #1 (Issues 1-7) Writer: Jhonen Vasquez Artist: Jhonen Vasquez
Alright, it has been years since I have even thought about this comic. So, I was browsing my local store the other day and I found it on the self calling my name. I picked it up and read it in one sitting.
JTHM is about the main character who calls himself Nny and his views on life and dealing with his own psychosis. Did I mention he is a homicidal maniac? The first "issue" or section is filled with a handful of mini stories that connect in a way, it was a little confusing at first but continuing on reading it, every issue has the main story line that flows the story a long as well as little mini "cut scenes" plus a comic that JTHM writes in story for the homeless called "Noodle Boy". This really draws out Nny fighting for his own sanity and argues for control with two dough boys and a nail bunny. The story has many twists and turns and a few surprises plus some good mini stories.
I think this book touches the beast in us all. It is filled with dark, macabre, and just down right violent and obscene imagery. It all fits the book but it is not for everyone if you have a faint heart or cannot understand the dark humor.
RATING: 8.0 (Would have been a 10, but this is the subjective rating)
