Regarding the trailers looking dreadful, as I've said before, I have seen six of them and the kid playing Aang doesn't smile ONCE. Maybe they're cutting emo trailers for some reason, but the movie is more lighthearted.. I can only hope.

I don't think so by what M. Night Shyamalan was saying in the beginning

Like I said before, i'll probably go see the movie. Might see it twice (to make up for twf not seeing it), but just depends if its a good movie. The trailers look pretty good to me, the effects might be awesome, and would definately make it worth seeing a live action version over the animation.
As for Aang not smiling. Remember he has alotta trouble he has to go through, Aang had alot of angsty moments in the series, he just had enough extra episodes that he could be properly happy throughout... In the movie though they may not have enough time to properly show him laughing it up, without making it seem like he doesnt give a S$#*%, which also wouldn't really be Aang-like in my opinion. -Then again, didn't like Aang much after the asspull at the end of the series-.

Re: Avatar the James Cameron spectacle...
My only exposure to the actual film was it playing outside of a hotel by the pool. The movie was too loud for the speakers, so they kept blowing out. From what I saw, it played exactly like a video game... you had lots of shit blowing up, fightfightfight, "plot development," more shit blowing up, "plot," explosions, fin.

James Cameron's Avatar was a technical achievement that deserves to be lauded for how many difficult constituent elements were brought together to create it, but the movie itself was just so, so bad. So bad.
So bad.

Well, yes, you can't deny the technical brilliance of the film. But the same could be said of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace ;D

I don't really like Cameron's work that much. (Aliens and Terminator 1/2 were fun, but I'm not sure how much of that is really because of him. And Dark Angel erases it all.) I almost thought I agreed with you on something. Then you had to go and bag on Dark Angel. Is the Avatar Series available on DVD or something? I'd love to go back and watch them all in order as a palate cleanser after I take my kids to the movie...

I don't think they have a full boxed set yet, but Books 1, 2 and 3 are each available (at Amazon, for example). ~TWF

So last New Year's Eve, my sister and I went to our favorite L.A. dive bar and turned that mother out. We ended the night (well, rather, we ended our recollection of the night) by imbibing an alcohol called "Eagle Rare" on the advice of the bartender. It is a whiskey unlike any I have encountered before in that literally the last thing I remember about the night was the shot hitting my lips.
Teleport to the next morning. I have somehow ended up halfway on my dad's couch, in his living room, fully dressed. He wakes me up at 7 and says we're gonna go see a movie like we talked about the day before. I manage a meager "I... w... ugh..." before staggering into the bathroom to stare at my miserable reflection for three minutes thinking "pull it together man, you've been hungover before." I then attempt to sit through almost three hours of flashing colors, explosions, rapidly changing camera angles, and out-of-focus 3D.
Long story short, don't watch Avatar on New Year's Day unless you think running to the bathroom to do a volcano impression sounds like a fun time. Needless to say I was unable to execute the planned double feature of seeing Sherlock Holmes after.

I think the long story short is don't watch James Cameron's Avatar. Unfortunately, you had to deal with it while hungover. You're a brave man.

Sherlock was super great, and I'm glad I didn't try to see it with the devil's hangover.

Yeah, seeing movies is bad enough when you've got your own hangover. ;D

Seeing Avatar as the last film after 24 straight hours of movie watching... was a test in... something. I cannot define it. Wasn't hung over, but I certainly was sleep deprived.
An Eagle Rare, you say?? Hmmmm.
