I have the origional movie of Buffy, the seven seaons of the TV show, and all 5 seasons of Angel. So, speaking as a Buffy fan I'm not putting anything about Buffy without Joss or some of the members from the origional cast I'm not going to be interested in a new Buffy movie. I haven't had time to read all the content on this link, but last time I read on the new Buffy Project it was a "remake."
If there would be a Buffy movie that was a continuation of the plot with some of the origional actors, and Joss at the helm I would be like "hells yeah, suck on that twilight." Though without Joss I think this is going to suck. They are probably targeting a new audience, and putting them first rather than keeping the origional fans in mind.
Remakes often suck, and speaking of remake. Why would you want to "remake" Buffy now? It seems a little soon to be remaking Buffy to me.

I understand that I'm a blasphemer around here for not thinking that Buffy was the greatest thing to ever exist anywhere, but... I honestly don't care.
For me, the Buffy movie was vastly superior to the TV show, and I didn't even like that that much. Joss Whedon is a good writer, but not a great one. Buffy is so far from untouchable sacred ground in my mind that the distance it needs to go to get there is unquantifiable with existing mathematics.
Will I see the new movie? Probably not. But then, once again, I don't give a crap about Buffy.

Ick.
That lady only talked about how much she liked the Buffy character, who was actually worst character in the TV series. It REALLY didn't help that the actress portraying her was the worst in the cast but also the most famous, so she had an obnoxiously large amount of lines with no capacity to deliver them.
I originally watched that show for Spike's commentary on the other characters. Xander was occasionally funny too, but they made everyone so melodramatic after a little while. Spike went drama queen here and there too, but he at least remained MOSTLY an asshole. He was a fun character.
The interplay between he and Angel is what made the 5th Season of Angel.
And this new woman wants to revive the "Buffy" part of Buffy? Yuck.
Joss Whedon's talent is in dialogue and making things satirically cheesy. I don't see it anywhere else. Hell I could barely tolerate the NAME "Buffy" let alone the character.
I recently re-viewed bits of the 1992 movie. It still had some funny stuff. A lot of it belonged in 1992 though, which made it sadly more painful. Hard to judge it fairly now.

I couldn't agree more. Sarah Michelle Gellar is very limited as an actress, and always takes away from scenes she's in. I did think it was kind of funny, though, that her "Daphne" in Scooby Doo uses the same face for fake pouting that her "Buffy" uses for the deepest depths of sorrow.

I think Buffy is the only thing I've ever seen her in, since she generally doesn't make movies that I would want to see. However I have watched a LOT of that show, so I've seen many more hours of her than I'd like.
I think her poor performance actually has made me find even looking at her difficult to bear. I keep thinking her lips are duck-like (Or at least remind me of that loud-mouthed dinosaur from Land Before Time). I wonder if she were a better actress whether I'd have gotten to this point, I'm pretty sure I thought she was OK at one point. Now she just irritates the hell out of me and I long for the next scene where someone punches her. I also started laughing in the parts of the story where she was unhappy for one reason or another.
I don't think an actress who could make me care about a character would irritate me with her mere appearance.

I don't understand the idea behind this sort of "reboot". Either it's going to be like the series, or it won't.
If it's like the series, it will probably be a pale imitation. It will offend Whedonites, most of whom will boycott it. If it isn't like the series, then why make Buffy the Vampire Slayer at all? Why make a different movie and just call it Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
A reboot is usually warranted only when the original material is either no longer relevant or it was an abject failure. The show was quite successful and I don't think it's aged to the point of inaccessibility. Seems like a waste of time and money.
Also, concerning the acting: The acting was rarely ever good, but it was fun, and that's actually more important to me in this case. In a show as silly and irreverent as Buffy, you want acting that isn't distractingly stinky, or distractingly good. It's a show about a cheerleader who hunts vampires and fights monthly apocalypses; it needs to be light, fluffy, and goofy, or it won't work. Joss has demonstrated many times that he can suddenly suckerpunch you with a moment of genuine emotion when he feels like it, and he always seems to be able to draw good acting out of his people when it counts.

I'm interested to see how they translate such a nineties show into the teens, but I do worry that it's going to be way too melodramatic (especially with all of the references to Batman Begins). I've mentioned a few times on here, but Buffy was at its best when it was light hearted and silly, only taking itself seriously enough to actually have a coherent plot.
Also, are they going to try to squeeze all of the characters into one film? Like... will we have Buffy, Willow, Spike, Xander, Giles, Anya, Cordelia, and Angel all in one movie? I feel like that's a blunder someone will very easily make in creating a Buffy movie, but it'll just create far too much chaos to develop the characters, especially since they'll probably go the route of The Master (ugh) for the movie.
In regards to her preference for Buffy, the character is a very strong feminist icon and I can see why she'd be so drawn to it. Hell, she may want to focus on Buffy so she can take the positive elements of the character and weed out the character's lack of depth/poor acting to make her a real powerful lead.
If the movie just takes the season 1 plot and reboots it, cutting out the episodes that didn't tie into the main arc, but reflavors it for a twenty-first century audience, I think it could work out well (especially if The Master doesn't totally suck as a Big Bad). That means we'd just have the core Scoobies (Giles, Cordelia, Xander, and Willow), Angel to be mysterious and dreamy, and only one villain to have to develop.
Alternatively, a film based on the Season 3 arc would also be great. It definitely sounds like she won't be writing any new material, though, based on Whedon's reactions. Reboots are fun, but it is definitely way too soon in my eyes. When the series is still coming up with new material, why reboot it? Even Star Wars hasn't gone that far, and that's saying something.

Whit has big shoes to fill. Normally I would say it is WAY to soon for a reboot, but I think she came off well in her quotes, I'll give her a chance.
From the sounds of things though she will have to seriously rock to get a fair shake from people who want Joss to do it.

Oh I'm certainly not going to judge whether or not she's able to write it well, since there's really nothing to base it on, but I worry that it'll become a big fan fiction instead of something more organic. Honestly, it'd be great to see a reboot with an all new plot but using the same characters, but that seems unlikely.
I'll probably go see it, for sure.

. . . but I worry that it'll become a big fan fiction instead of something more organic. . . . I'll probably go see it, for sure. I think you nailed it! I am concerned, but there is a small part of me that is cautiously optimistic. I would like to see it do well for two reasons. 1) I would love to see Joss get sweet royalties 2) If it is fun to watch I am all for it.

I'm a huge fan of the series, but I'm not making a special trip to go see this one. It's not because I'm "Boycoting" the movie, but mainly because Buffy's kind of been there, and done that for me. "Re-Vamping" a series is for people who lack the creativity to come up with their down.
I don't like Star...anything, but at least the new star trek movie tied the movie into the origional plot through the storyline. I somehow doubt this movie will do that.
I would have been excited if this was a movie based in the same series maybe using new characters with a couple of cameo appearances from people off the series, but re-vamps suck in general. I imagine if my peeps want to go see it I will go with them, but otherwise I may or not rent this one later after it comes out.
Even if you don't like Sarah Michelle Gheller she's still won a few awards, and was in a show that lasted 7 seasons. She wasn't my favorite on the show, because that would have been Emma Claufeild (Anya), but the show had a good cast in general. All opnions aside anyone who can win awards, and be in a show for that long makes money, and has bragging rights.
I play the Buffy RPG based on the Unisystem some days, and there are good ideas out there. One idea I had when I GM'd a few sessions was that Sunnydale came back occasioanlly like Dracula's Castle only appeared on certian nights. Basically, the player characters were trapped in the Wishverse version of Sunnydale, and trying to escaple.
I kind of liked the comics too. LA was sucked into a Hell dimension, and I haven't been fallowing them much anymore, but I think they actually brought back some of the Old Ones into into the plot.
Little did I know, The Old Ones actually came from Lovecraft's storylines. Which is pretty cool, and before I started reading Lovecraft (not too long ago). I thought The Master was just somebald weirdo in leather, but now I understand what he meant by tryign to Free The Old Ones. Which in my opinion made him a cooler character.

I definitely agree that The Master was a cool character, but he was also a product of bad acting and Whedon not really having Buffy down as well as he did in the later seasons. That's actually a reason I'd like to see the remake; let's make The Master not awful!

Wait... Buffy dared to reference Lovecraft? I'm sorry. I have to take back every good thing I've ever said about Joss Whedon. Screw Whedon, screw Buffy, Angel, and Firefly.
I cannot believe he tried to tie the brilliance of Lovecraft to his lame little comedy show. Ugh. Seriously. Just... ugh!
Go to hell, Joss Whedon.

I'd hate to see what you're like when you spill milk, WK. lol That was quite a reaction!
"The Old Ones" are ancient demon gods that ruled the earth long before humans even really existed. Yes, it's a very similar idea to Lovecraft's work, but there are also werewolves, vampires, ghosts, mummies, untold varieties of other demons, and so on; it isn't as though the writers weren't drawing on a number of different sources. THE Dracula actually shows up in an episode (and again in the comics, I think).
