Yeah, it is very British- in that its more willing to deal openly with social and political issues and is full of irony and sarcasm. Its really got its finger on the ball, and can do a lot of stuff now that its in two titles rather than just one.

I just finished reading Nemesis. I liked it but the climax left me kinda hanging.
Reading Flash. Good, not great.
Namor the First Mutant: Seems like good stuff is just about to happen all the time. Then it let's you down.
Invincible has not disappointed me yet.
If you have cash to throw around DC's Absolute Justice is highly recommended by yours truly.
A Cry for Justice was good. It's out in trade.
I've heard good things about Lex Luthor's Action Comics.
Metal Men has been great.
Doom Patrol also good.
Larflees' Christmas Special was hilarious.
Thor, from before the Siege event was great. Three trades out with those stories.
I've read a lot more but those are the ones that crossed my mind.

I'll definitely have to check out Thor and Absolute Justice.
I can't hang with Namor anymore. I loved that character, until they announced that he's a mutant. It may seem like a small thing, but it absolutely destroyed that character for me.

I took a look at some trades I’ve read in the last few months and figured I’d throw in a few more recommendations on top of the ones already mentioned (READ ATOMIC ROBO!). Obviously I’m leaving out things I’ve yet to read (Eye of the Camera looks almost as good as Marvels), wasn’t very good (Fables is wonderful but Bill Willingham needs to stay far away from superheroes), isn’t very recent (which means 90% of DC’s trades are out), isn’t really a comic book (the Twisted Toyfare Theater collects are the only worthwile thing Wizard has ever published), or isn’t a comic at all (I’m a marvel handbook junkie).
Secret Warriors and Fantastic Four – I know reactions to recent F4 news hasn’t been too positive but Hickman’s Marvel work has been great especially where Nick Fury and Reed Richards are concerned.
Marvel Adventures – I’ll level with you, the MA line isn’t anywhere near as good as the previous incarnation. They’ve moved away from a lot of what made the MA line unique (like self-contained stories). However it’s still better than the majority of Marvel’s current output.
Madame Xanadu – This is one of those rare books that I get for the art. I’m not saying that the writing is bad (Matt Wagner gave us the awesomeness that is Sandman Mystery Theater) but Amy Reeder’s art is the read star here. It’s a shame they just cancelled this book.
Thor: the Mighty Avenger and Muppet Show – Roger Langridge is one of those guys who does wonderful work, experiments with the medium, packs tons of stuff into every issue, receives lots of critical acclaim, and can’t seem to sell a book to save his life. Let’s fix that. (As a sidenote: T tMA makes me feel better about the movie. It proves you can tell good early Thor stories without Don Blake)
Thor – JMS gets all the hype but I’ve been much more impressed by Kieron Gillen’s year-long “fill-in”. The jury is still out on Fraction’s run.
Thunderbolts – I loved Kurt and Fabian’s runs but hated the direction that Warren Ellis and others took it in after Civil War. Luckily Jeff Parker seems to be getting things back on track.
Mighty Avengers – Dan Slott is always at his best when he’s dealing with second and third tier characters. I get far more enjoyment out of this recently cancelled Hank Pym-centric book and his old She-Hulk and Thing comics than I do out of his god-awful Amazing Spider-Man run.
Invincible Iron Man – I was never much of an Iron Man fan growing up (I was always more about Spider-Man) but Fraction’s comics and the movies have changed that.
Darkwing Duck – Yes, Darkwing Duck. As with my other Boom! recommendation (Muppet Show) it’s a “kids book” based on a property that no child could possibly have seen unless they have really nerdy parents. Of course I’m just loving it as someone who enjoyed the series as a kid.
Planetary – I’m a little hesitant to call this a “current” comic but it did finally wrap up a year or so ago and it does represent the high point or Warren Ellis’ rather hit or miss career.
Recent Manga (at least as far as American translations are concerned):
Shaman King and Ultimo – Hiroyuki Takeri’s Shaman King is one of those series that was great right until the end where it all just kind of fell apart. Who says American comics and manga are completely different? Speaking of east meeting west, Ultimo is a series where Hiroyuki takes a concept from Stan Lee and runs with it.
Fullmetal Alchemist and Hero Tales – Two great Hiromu Arakawa comics. The FMA manga is even better than the anime. Hero Tales explores some similar themes in a much shorter series.
Negima – Kind of guilty pleasure. It can’t seem to decide if it’s a fighting series, an epic fantasy, or a harem comedy and that’s its charm.
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – I freely admit that I prefer the Anime but the manga’s story is far ahead of the Anime and the Light Novels.
Yotsuba&! and Azumanga Daioh – If you don’t love these Kiyohiko Azuma comics then you’re dead inside.

I really loved the Darwyn Cooke Spirit revival but you’re the first person I’ve seen who wasn’t disappointed but the First Wave stuff. Did you read both? How do they compare?

Since this came up elsewhere (and DC is undergoing a huge shakeup) I figured I’d bump this. I’d recommend some great DC books but they all just got cancelled and they appear to be canceling a lot of the solicited trades. At this point all I can recommend is Fables and whatever they’re calling Jonah Hex post reboot (Weird Westerns or something). Oh, and I’m sure Grant Morrison’s Action Comics will be great if you can stand only getting four issues a year. The Hulk books are great (even Red Hulk now that Jeff Parker took over) but it looks like Pak is on his way out. Jeff Parker really has the magic touch and has done a lot to get Thunderbolts back on track. DnA’s Cosmic stuff (currently the Annihilators minis) has been great overall (though Realm of Kings was disappointing). Hickman may have gotten some bad press over the Human Torch thing but his FF work is really good high-concept stuff. I haven’t read Journey into Mystery yet because I’ve moved to trades but I’d recommend it just on the strength of Gillen’s Thor and Beta Ray Bill runs. Image has a lot of quality books. While certain recent moves have me falling out of love with his Walking Dead, Kirkman’s Invincible continues to kick butt. Morning Glories is basically “the Prisoner” set in a high school. Chew is too weird to describe while doing it justice. The other indy standout is Atomic Robo. It gets compared to Hellboy a lot because the lead is a long-lived globetrotting adventurer who gets involved in weird stuff but the truth is that it’s a lot smarter and funnier than Hellboy. Plus the art ascetic is completely different. I don’t read as much Manga as I used to but I’d still recommend Yotsuba& and Fullmetal Alchemist to any fan of American comics. PS: I recommended a lot of things but if I could only recommend one of them it’d be Atomic Robo. You know what? I don’t think I’m doing it justice. The official site lists a number of AR stories (mostly backups and FCBD issues) that can be read for free. Give them a look. www.atomic-robo.com/free-comics/If you don’t love the most recent FCBD issue then the series probably isn’t for you. If you do then there are five trades and the sixth mini starts in three days but the arcs hold up pretty well by themselves so you can start whereever you want. www.nuklearpower.com/2011/08/29/free-comic-book-day-2011/Enjoy.
