Finally got a new desktop. Amongst other things, this means that I finally have sound again for the first time in months. Yaaay sound! For some reason I also bought a webcam.
So here's the thing. This sucker wasn't that expensive, and its got a terabyte hard drive. A friggin' terabyte. Have we really gotten to the point where we're storing this much crap on our computers???

What OS are you using? I've recently started playing with Linux using a Virtual Machine. Linux is better at most things thant windows, except for gaming reasons.
I highly suggested Google Chrome as you're default browser. It’s faster, and it has some really great extensions like Add block.
Also, if you’re running Microsoft you can download Microsoft security essentials. It’s a good antivirus that’s designed for your computer. It’s also free.

Its store bought and I loathe Mac, so I'm running Windows 7.
I'm aware of Google Chrome, but I'm partial to Firefox, but I'll definitely look into the security program. Can never have too much.

Okay, one warning. If you already have an anti virus installed don't install another one. I've read that can cause allot of problems. So, if already have a security program paid for just keep that one installed.

I have a USB 1 Terabyte drive (pocket sized, no other connections/power necessary) that I take with me when I travel. 3/4's full BEFORE I got your demonoid invite

AVG Enterprise is another GREAT and Free app. Uses very little resources to boot. I team it with Spybot scans. Never had a problem yet!

So, if already have a security program paid for just keep that one installed. Depends what you're running. Macafee and Norton are both notorious for not playing well with others. Further, be very careful about your Quarentine Files. If your subscription lapses, Macafee will dump that file onto your computer. That said, I get Macafee free from work. BUT it doesn't mind my AVG running at the same time and catching what it misses. That's how I lost my old XP box. Norton doesn't like to be uninstalled. Personally, I'd get rid of both and stick to the better free ones. <shrug>

Norton's more virus than a virus is. My neighbor had to have his computer worked on after Norton went loco for some reason.

The one good thing I've read about Nortan is that it's suppose to be able to write a hard drive to zero's (A government wipe). For those of you who don't know whenever you format a hard drive or delete a file those files are some times recoverable. So, if you're working on something like Human Resources, or payroll and are having to change hard drives writing to zero's comes in handy.
From what I've been told, and have read writing a drive to zero's is the only way to completely wipe out data short of removing the casing and taking a hammer to the contents inside the hard drive.
However the operating system Knoppix allows this. From what I understand you can boot the OS from a disk and do the same thing. The best part of this unlike Nortan, Knoppix is FREEWARE!.

Have we really gotten to the point where we're storing this much crap on our computers??? Depends of the use you give to it. If you want to keep backups of everything you do (documents, source code, compilations, databases, etc.) you might run out of space no matter what size the HD is. Other than that... yes. Bigger HD means people will likely store more crap.
