Being "mature" is vastly overrated.

36 here Back in my day we didn't have these fancy "Proboards"! If you had a game board it was made out of cheap cardboard, if you were rich it was wood. That's all I have to say about that. Now get off my lawn!

Not to mention Dhark (not sure exactly how old he is, but he's no kid), Andyman, toast (when he's around), etc. We really do have quite a "spread" of (physical) ages running around this joint.

Age is completely relative, as this board demonstrates so well (I'm a sociology major, I think about this stuff!) I've been lucky enough to appear much younger than my 38 years -- the kids at work will almost always guess me as a twenty-something. But sometimes I don't feel that way! I recently developed arthritis in my right knee. I think my thick, non-greying, all-there hair is a little thinner than it was last time I checked -- not cool! But when I started studying sociology and learned about the different cultural views on aging -- that there really is no universally accepted marker denoting "old age" -- I decided to stop thinking of myself that way and just accept things as they are. We have a generous spread of 20 years or so among us, yet here we are, all chatting away about superheroes like teenagers. Its a guilty pleasure for me -- I don't generally advertise my geekieness to outsiders! ;D But that's our unifying quality, isn't it? "Geek" is almost a master status for us -- it's how we identify ourselves. A little off-topic for this particular thread, but I'll share it anyway...below is a rough draft for an article I wrote when I was a columnist for a local newspaper group...it got a good reaction from my fans, but I think some of my proboards buds will appreciate it more! Did you know that this coming Monday, July 13, is "Embrace Your Geekiness Day?" Come on, you know you've got a little geek in you – most everyone does! But what is a geek, exactly? Glad you asked, because in true geeky fashion, I have the answer!
The 1976 American Heritage Dictionary defined a geek as "1) a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat or snake."
Um, gross!
The definition of the word has evolved, of course. A more recent edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary alternately defines the word as "2) a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked," and, "3) an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity."
I would define a geek as a person who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination. A definition common among self-identified geeks is: "one who is primarily motivated by passion." I know, that answer itself exudes geekiness!
Which definition of "geek" best illustrates the condition? I guess that would depend on your personal experience with individual geeks. I'm a closet geek – no, that doesn't mean I have a passion for closets, though I love the smell of cedar as much as the next guy.
I simply try not to advertise my geekiness!
Most of my friends are geeks (we tend to run in packs), but I regularly associate with muggles...er, I mean, "normal" folk.
It's very clandestine of me!
So how do you know if you might be a geek? Well, if you're into polyhedrons and know what it means to "tap your manna," you most certainly qualify! Know what an MMORPG is? Do you spend countless hours visiting bizarre sites on the internet? Ever read an encyclopedia? The whole thing? Dress up in a costume for a movie premier? Do you walk around the Renaissance Faire in a makeshift tabard, speaking with a weak British accent, even though you’re not a member of the SCA?
You're probably a geek.
Even if most of those things mean nothing to you, everyone has their quirks. Geeks just have more quirks than other people! So identify the geeky Padawan within yourself and celebrate it! After all, knowledge and imagination are still considered good things, last I checked.

Wait, that was actually real?! I thought my parents told me that as a joke. I fit none of things you said about what makes a geek. I even forbidden my players from dressing as their characters whenever we play DnD. What? Not only was I the DM, I was also one of the players. And I am not gonna dress as a gnome wizard, dwarf fighter, or a halfling rouge! *thinks for a second* I wonder if I should host my own DnD game on Terra's site? I had a good story going on before personal issues stopped the game.

That was more of a general selection of geeky traits -- believe me, I'd rather be caught dead before dressing up like Harry Potter for a premier. ;D
