Grace grew up in an orphanage right outside Hell's Kitchen. She doesn't remember her parents, as they died when she was very young, and the locket she wears carrying a picture of her mother is the only thing she has thats sacred to her. She secretly hopes that her mother is still alive somewhere, and her locket is the only way she can recognize who she is if she finds her.
One day when she was 14, the orphanage was broken into, and a fire was started. It was this night that her mutant powers started to manifest. She came face to face with the burglar, and as he tried to take her, she screamed and out of nowhere, a forcefield surrounded her, pushing the burglar out the window while the fire raged through the house and consumed it.
By the time the police and firefighters came, the fire had burned the building to the ground. The police tried to speak with her, and take her to the station, but she was so shocked at what had happened and afraid that they would find out that she killed a man, she ran as fast as she could. She's been living alone on the streets ever since, stealing to survive, sleeping somewhere different every night.
It is now 2 years later, she is 17 years old, and her powers have developed quickly. One day, after an off duty Detective (Detective Sanders) saw her use her powers to defend herself from being attacked in an alley, the police got wind of her. After observing her using her powers for some time (specifically her powers of psychometry), Sanders came to her and offered her an unofficial "consultant" job. If she agreed to use her powers to help him with his investigations. In return, he would provide her with a meager (but steady) income, and help her try to track down her mother (if she was even still alive).
