My life actually has been enriched because of star wars. Quite some time ago I was actually hurting for some new reading material and my buddy convinced me to start reading the star wars novels, after reading timothy zahn's trilogy (I think it was dark force rising) I was comepletely hooked. And I still get that feeling of childish glee to this day everytime I pick up a new one. It may have been star wars novels that convinced me I wanted to be a writer. What he said...

Alright, who is your favorite Sith? I find them all equally un-compelling. If I could somehow forget the prequels, Vader would win hands down.

To quote another film, "there can be only one" Just one more reason why Empire blew the other films - even the first - out of the water. "No ... I am your father..." followed by collective gasp of the audience. When the movie finished you couldn't wait for the next instalment. I'm scratching my head as to what happened in the 2nd and 3rd prequels. Some fights, and some other stuff where stuff goes boom I guess. The problem I have with the books (Expanded universe etc) is that it's hard to convey the scale and look of something that is as visual as Star Wars, so the characters have to be strong. I'm sure some of the books would translate into movies (even animated features) to make GL some more money. He clearly doesn't have enough at £3 billion or whatever. More the point is that with GL not at the helm a decent job might be done of them.

There was actual serious talk of turning the Zahn Trilogy into films or animated features at one point, and I would have been all over that. The problem is that they have Luke, Han, et al only a few years after RotJ, so if you wanted to do them now you'd either have to go CGI, or use new actors.

There was also work done on Star Wars: Underworld, a proposed live-action TV series, but it's been on hold for quite a while because Lucas doesn't understand how much a TV show should cost. Also it's a terrible idea. ~TWF

I was really excited about Underworld, provided that it didn't involve Lycans and Vampires warring for control of Corellia's nights...

Doesn't sound a lot like it will ever see the light of day. GL's concerns about money are probably valid though. It's hard to see a network taking on a TV show for adults set in the star wars universe. The target audience would be who exactly?
Live at home forty somethings with no hair, beards, poor hygiene and straining faded t shirts with Han Solo and co on the front, watching in their basements and moaning on the internet about how the show sucks?
The last great Sci Fi shows I can remember were BSG and Star Trek: TNG and Voyager, to a degree. I was never a fan of Stargate. There's certainly room for another epic series, but TV people are brutal. Unless a show tops its time slot they don't seem to be interested, hence the 1 season and done trend.
Some seem to get poor figures and cling on for season after season though thanks to sponsorship. I can see a star wars show struggle to get a sponsor. After all SW is associated with young adults, merchandise and milking everything (Games, lunchboxes, wallpaper, toys etc). Not much to milk from an Adult Star Wars show.

back onto the star wars topic...I agree, how is there not a star wars thread here? I've seen plenty of activity in the game discussion threads about it. Not a star wars fan, but just saying, it's weird that there isn't an active star wars thread

Sci Fi isn't popular with audiences these days. Look what happened to Firefly. Granted, Joss Whedon wasn't/isn't as big a name as Lucas, but Firefly's budget wasn't anywhere near what Lucas probably wants, so it's a tradeoff. And considering how much trouble he had in the prequels deciding whether to aim his film at kids or adults who enjoyed his previous films as kids, I'm guessing he'd have a really hard time finding an audience. The only really successful Sci Fi out there now is CSI and its many clones. Any show that seriously says "enhance!" or other mumbo jumbo is modern Sci Fi. So sad. I don't really count the various vampire dramas as "Sci Fi" as they mostly shirk the actual exploration and "what if?" in favour of kinky sex. Only Supernatural did the job properly, but it's on its last legs, now. Also, I'd just like to say that I kind of liked Enterprise and was sad when it got the can. I liked it a hell of a lot more than stupid Voyager. ~TWF

Uh.. V did very well in the ratings, and only got canceled because it dared to use SciFi to question a liberal precept when SciFi is typically a bastion of liberal ideology.
People love science fiction, when it's done well, and people love Star Wars. A Star Wars TV series could be the next Buffy

That's true, V did fairly well. So did Lost and Battlestar, now that I think about it. They were sort of gateway drugs into more Sci Fi for regular audiences.
But I guess what's making me queasy about the idea of a Star Wars TV show is that the name "Star Wars" is so strongly associated with the less comely parts of geek/nerd culture. Battlestar and V were both remakes of existing TV shows that were probably unfamiliar to anyone who would normally hate Sci Fi. And Lost basically roped in people who liked Survivor, and only gradually turned into Sci Fi as the writers flailed desperately to come up with new ways to one-up themselves in the mystery department when actually they had no goddamn clue what they were doing.
A small, but well-done Star Wars show could be successful on a small network, but I get the feeling that Lucas wants this on ABC or Fox or something.

I think a Star Wars show could do 2 to 4 seasons of good ratings on a major network. I honestly do. I haven't checked the ratings for the fairy tale show, but that's on a major network. For one thing, I think people would like to have something family friendly in primetime again. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for getting the family around the TV to watch Wonderful World of Disney or something.
