I love that first scene with the lightsaber, too. I took some of his apparent reverence as nostalgia, though. I always got the hint that he enjoyed adventure and really grew to miss it in his years in exile, and I'm sure he missed his friends (like Anakin) and his old way of life.

Overfondness for Jedi is one of the reasons I like the Scum & Villainy book for Star Wars Saga Edition so much. If I remember correctly, the only "Force related" thing in the whole book is a talent for Jedi Sentinels. Lots and lots of cool tech, and modifications. It's not that I don't like Jedi or anything, but it's kinda irritating that if I offered to run a game, at least half my players would ask if they can play Jedi. (Well, that depends on the era. If I say it'll be Clone Wars, they'll probably just assume they can.) Even more annoying, most Jedi characters I've seen are about the same as one another. Lightsaber this, telekinetic That, maybe a Mind Trick (but probably not). Everyone wants to be a Jedi Baddass instead of a Jedi Sage. Personally, I've built plenty of fun Jedi (and Sith) characters, but I tend to prefer ones that aren't more of the same. For example, two of them focused on hand-to-hand combat, without the use of a lightsaber. Another was a sorta Jedi Gunslinger, like Kyle Katarn, only alien. Lately, my main gripe is that Star Wars has stopped doing things I can care about. I keep hearing the same - Clone Wars CGI series (that seems to never end)
- Old Republic MMO
- Phantom Menace in 3D (as if that movie needed to cause worse headaches)
I've heard little bits here and there, about the live-action series they've been trying to launch for several years, I got an e-mail saying the Darth Plagueis novel came out, but still... I feel like Star Wars has really been ruined. Not just the edits in Special Edition, and on the Blu-Rays, (I actually don't mind them so much.) but because they all the characters and all the stories I love about it just get lost in a sea of crap. It's made that much worse by people who hate the prequel trilogy. Sure, Phantom Menace isn't that great, but is there really anything to be gained by hating any of the movies? Or by arguing which one is the best? I'd say all six of them are on my top ten favorite movies of all time. So what if Empire Strikes Back isn't my favorite? I still love it! *sigh* Anything to divide a fanbase...

One of the big reasons I try to avoid Star Wars games is due to every goddamn person wanting to play a Jedi and pitching a fit when I tell them they can't if we're playing during the Rebellion. It gets kind of irritating.

I always liked playing Nobles and Scoundrels, running around being all charming and shit. Generally, I like playing "non-combat" types in games, now that I think about it. I like building the intellectual characters that would never really choose to be in violent situations but find their way into them due to happenstance.

I really like playing the guy who always has a way out, like he never takes the time to shoot first but has a contigency plan. At least in star wars

I remember a Star Wars game here on the boards, set during the Clone Wars, where I played a great pilot, sorta Han Solo-like character. His Targeting modifier only worked for vehicle-mounted weapons. (Yeah, he could've really done some damage if that game had gone anywhere.)

I like building the intellectual characters that would never really choose to be in violent situations but find their way into them due to happenstance. I tend to be just the opposite. I like being the back-up plan in case diplomacy fails. If diplomacy doesn't fail, I congratulate the face on a job well done. Since diplomacy is often scripted to fail, I usually get to come off the bench. I still like to play smart, but to me the fun of Star Wars just isn't in the "smart" stuff. "War" is right there in the name. I've played non-violent characters in WoD and Shadowrun, but in Star Wars I never saw the point. Of course I have no problem with it being other people's preference.

Yeah, War is right there in the name. Which is probably why Soldier is the second-favorite class in Saga Edition. You want to attack things well, and be able to to withstand as much damage as possible? Soldier's good for that. (Better than Jedi, I'd say, but it's not as "cool" and Soldiers don't generally have Force Powers like Jedi do.) Personally, I like to have a sneak-attack option, but not be forced to attack from stealth. I don't have a problem with being a talker, a medic, a tech-guy, or a pilot, but I always like to have some good combat ability. Most GMs I know (in person, at least) tend to make role-playing more about combat that actually role-playing. And now I've been reminded of a Tech Specialist I made for a Saga Edition one-shot about a year ago. I can't find the sheet right now, but he was super nasty. He started as a Noble, so he was trained in a bunch of skills. Then he went into Soldier, picked up plenty of HP, and their better Base Attack Bonus. When he had the chance, he went into Military Engineer from the Clone Wars Campaign Guide. I think he was trained in 9 skills, he picked up a number of fun feats for Surgery, in addition to his Tech feats. The only way he could've been better was if he'd been a cyborg, and gotten some kind of computer-interface cable implanted in his arm. (But I felt like that would be too much work for a one-shot character.) :)Ha. Good times. Good times.

I think taking Jedi out of the equation completely, by making them NPCs or having them wiped out by the Sith, would be a more fun game to play. In the games I ran/played in back in the day (decades ago) the Jedi would start off crap and completely overshadow the other characters eventually. Sure, other characters improved as well, but Lightsabres were nasty when they did 5D+Alter (or was it Control?) so you basically one shot anything you hit, ignore blaster fire by reflecting it back at the shooter, and heal yourself if by some disaster you actually take a hit.
Make all trained force users Sith, and all PCs are non force or untrained force users. Even an inexperienced Sith would provide a nasty challenge to a bunch of characters.

That's beautiful. ^__^ I really don't mind cheesy choreography if the fight is meaningful or just plain fun. "Flynning" is just fine if done properly. My reaction to the fight in the Phantom Menace, however, went something like this: "Oh, sweet, a showdown. A 2 on 1 showdown, too - never really seen that in Star Wars before. It's a little weird that the good guys are the 2, but whatever." "OH SNAP double-bladed lightsaber. This is going to be cool." ".... wow, this is taking a long time. I wonder if I have time to go pee." "Soo.... nobody is going to say anything? No dialogue at all, eh? Hunh." "Where are these guys anyway? What could that red force field possibly be for?" "You guys are just going to sit there and still not say anything? Awesome. Well at least nobody is yelling YIPPEE, so that's something." "No, don't go in alone you idiot! At least wait for Obi to catch up and nevermind you're dead you idiot. Mentor Occupational Hazard strikes again." "Oh great now they're fighting. I should have gone pee when they were in the Room of Unnecessary Catwalks." "Jesus Christ, George, you really don't know how to end a fight without someone falling down an impossibly long shaft of some kind, do you?" ~TWF

. "Flynning" is just fine if done properly. Several years ago I would have agreed. In recent years, I've been seeing a lot more realistic fighting in movies and y'know what? The fight scenes are infinitely more enjoyable now.
