I was recently cast in a production of an adaption of the epic poem the Argonautica called Jason and the Argonauts. It got me thinking about some time back, someone wanted to run a Star Trek game and it shifted in and out of various people's interest including my own. The biggest problem I always noticed was that a lot of problems in the Star Trek universe revolve around situations that even the writers didn't fully understand. (Writers would often simply write 'tech' in the script and the 'scientists' behind the scenes of the show would put in the proper words).
So I got to thinking, Star Trek is a universe with a very established universe but not a great deal is accessible enough for the average roleplayer to know about it and rattle some information off. But what is a setting in which many of us are familiar and even someone who has no idea what they're doing could still roleplay moderately well? A ship sailing at sea in say...Greek times? I'm not necessarily saying that people would play Jason and the sailors of the Argo but someone would be captain, first mate, navigator, yadda yadda yadda. Naturally because you wouldn't want 20+ players in a game, there would be a load of NPCs to act as the other sailors.
I'm thinking I want to GM this game but at the moment I have a job that occupies me at least 3 times a week if not 5 and may be turning permanent in which case 5 is going to be the norm, rehearsals at night, and a long-distance relationship in which I don't get to talk to her very often in the first place. However, I find I often have more free time than I think I do and may go ahead and start it up anyway. It would be similar to the ideas of Jason and the Argonauts in that it's in a setting where things like monsters and magic exist but also similar to a time during the Age of Discovery.
I think anything and everything could be expected to show up. Thus the reason for exploration. You don't know if giants actually live in the northern lands, so why not go up there and find out with your trustworthy crew?
Questions? Comments? Advice? Bagel?
