There are other Marvel characters who could easily be plugged into SHIELD though... Wyatt Wingfoot, I think the guys I mentioned are a bigger draw and I don’t think THEY can carry a series. I’m not sure if there’s a legal issue with Sony if it’s a TV show. Even if they do use him I worry budgets will keep him from being a superpowered Astronaut werewolf who knows Spider-Man; if you can’t have that then why bother? Still, it’d totally be worth it if they have J.K. Simmons play his dad again. …which they probably won’t because of budgetary reasons. Seriously, Joss Whedon does great work in television (except for Dollhouse) and the Avengers movie was fantastic but I don’t believe he can do SHIELD with a TV budget. The best they can hope for is something between X-Files and Alphas. It could be great but it won’t be SHIELD. God, I hope not.

You don't think he could do SHIELD on a TV budget? The guy who did 12 seasons of modern day D&D can't tackle espionage and superheroics with a TV budget?

Buffy and Angel had nighttime shots of people in masks and monster makeup. They were, among other things, horror shows so they can get away with “less is more”.

You don't think he could do SHIELD on a TV budget? The guy who did 12 seasons of modern day D&D can't tackle espionage and superheroics with a TV budget? Take that back! Buffy was NOT Modern Day D&D! That is an insult to the most important game of all time! Anyway I definitely think the show can be done on a TV budget. I even think super hero stuff can be done on a TV budget. That was never my concern (I know, others have voiced it, but I don't share it). My concern is that they'll push him to do "realistic" and SHIELD is, IMO, devoid of any value in a "realistic" setting. What makes SHIELD work is that you need an extreme response to an extreme situation. We've already got the CIA (FBI, NSA, ATF...) to deal with "realistic" threats.

At this point I doubt the studios are in any mood to push Joss around much. He's their most valuable commodity, and he's more than proven that given free reign, he is profitable. Yes, I know, douche bags in suits and all, but still, he's got the best shot of pulling this off that we've ever seen.
And Buffy was totally D&D. The other other Other white meat. That made no sense, but I like it...

I'm in a good mood, so please don't force me to break down the dozens of ways in which Buffy is clearly not D&D.

Who's talking about draws? I'm just talking about using established Marvel characters to "season" the setting.

I'm actually curious about what made it not D&D and, honestly, I can see why you would say it wasn't. I guess it may be more of a White Wolf type of setting than a D&D type, but I'm interested to hear your stance. But in another thread. And only if it won't make you lose your good mood Worth noting that, when I say D&D, I really mean something more like d20 Modern.

Also, the special effects budget is probably even less of an issue than the casting budget. Part of the movies’ appeal to non-comics readers was the big celebrities. Aside from Thor (and even that had Portman), the movies that lead into SHIELD had some major actors. RD Jr may have been willing to slum it on Ally McBeal during the 90s but he wouldn’t now.
Joss can do al lot with a cast of unknowns. Aside from Tony Head, most people had never heard of most of the Buffy cast. A lot of them owe their careers to BtVS.
