Looks like the core book and the GM book are both due out in the second quarter. Yes but when FFG says "second quarter" it really means "maybe we'll have 500 copies ready at GenCon"

Just been looking at the wiki entry on FFG. I should have guessed that any company which works with Games Workshop and Lucasarts would be an industry leader, but their output with all their other games has been prolific to say the least, so I'm not surprised they have a 'done when it's done' outlook with publication.
I wouldn't be surprised if hasbro went sniffing around them at some point.

I wouldn't be surprised if hasbro went sniffing around them at some point. FFG has a reputation for having the highest production quality in the industry and for being willing to try new things (crazy stuff like trusting the game developers it hires rather than the bean counters...). I can't say I'm in love with every system that FFG has put out, but I respect their work. Meanwhile, one of the most respected developers in the industry left Hasbro's "D&D Next" project, with all the usual "I just wanted to work on my own projects" BS attached. I almost hate to say this, being a lifelong D&D player... but I almost wish Hasbro would just close down their game development division. Maybe in a decade or so, they'd sell the name "Dungeons & Dragons" to someone who actually cares what that name means to gamers, and we'd get a D&D we could actually play again.

Whilst I own all but the first (hard to get hold of unless you don't need an arm and a leg, cause that's what it costs) D&D game I will hold my hands up and admit to only playing AD&D 1e and 2e, B/X and BECMI (which is the best in my opinion). I have core books of 3, 3.5, 4 but these days it's so easy (usually costs nothing to get hold of a retro clone) to play D&D it seems pointless to switch to a new version, lemming like.
I'd prefer they supported previous versions with new material, make it multi system and forget about the new edition treadmill. All they will accomplish is fracturing the market further, which is bloated by too many rule sets (think about how many Fantasy RPGs are out there that you know about, then consider there are probably many many more that you don't and many do the same thing in a slightly different way).
*however* there has been mentioned several ways of playing the new game, with stripped down Basic (to appeal to young kids or old farts, whomever they might be...) a standard game and an advanced game. I might be interested in the former. I want fast, easy, not bogged down with rules or options and fun to play. That applies to all the games I play these days, and perhaps limits me because when it comes to digesting the contents of an inch thick tome, I haven't the time or inclination.
Old school D&D sold like hot cakes with 30-60 page softback books and AD&D offered more for those that wanted it. Whilst we ran AD&D 1e for ages I didn't use even a third of what was in the books, because we didn't need to. There are sections of the Players Handbook and DMs guide I have never set eyes on. If WOTC want to sell me a version of the game that comes in (total page count including monsters, dms and players) under 100 pages I'll give it serious consideration. Otherwise, it'll be another hardback tome creaking on my shelves, with me thinking I'll get round to it one day.

That's like noon, CST, right? I could do it on a Wednesday, with a few exceptions possibly. I thought you were gonna run that on Wednesday night, no? Or was that another one-shot? I am interested to run it for Skype, but I wanna wait until the core book is released. My 8-week "pokemybrainouthomeworkoverload" class will be done by then, and I'll have more time to devote to doing it proper.

The one-shot I want to run, the "no identities" game, I'm still going to run for the Wednesday Night Skype group.

What days are you looking at? Like I said, if Wednesday's a contender I could be down for it...

What days are you looking at? Like I said, if Wednesday's a contender I could be down for it... Any weekday, so far. But in response to your first question, 10 AM EST is 9 CST, not noon 8)

Gotcha, I'm used to translating it the other direction... Why is it I'm the only person you know on the right side of the country? ;D

Gotcha, I'm used to translating it the other direction... Why is it I'm the only person you know on the right side of the country? ;D Maybe the murder rate is so high there your question should read: "Why is it I'm the only person you know who's still alive on the right side of the country?" ;D
