Real estate agent Arthur Douglas, his wife Yvette, and daughter Heather, were driving across the Mojave Desert from Las Vegas to Los Angeles when they witnessed an alien spacecraft pass overhead. The ship belonged to the mad Titan, Thanos, who was scouting for a potential conquest. Wishing to keep his existence a secret, Thanos destroyed the Douglas' car before he left, presuming them dead.
Unknown to the Titan, his father, Mentor had been monitoring his activities on Earth. Mentor discovered that Heather Douglas was still alive, and took her back to Titan to be raised. She later returned to Earth as Moondragon.
Mentor determined that the threat posed by his son to the world of Titan could no longer be ignored, and he decided to create a being of sufficient power to defeat Thanos. Enlisting the aid of his father Khronos, the Titans engineered a humanoid body from the Earth's soil and imbued it with cosmic energy, into which they transplanted Arthur's spirit.
The Titans returned to their world with their new champion, who they named Drax the Destroyer, protector of Titan. His mind isn't all there since the trauma of his death, but as his mental state has improved over the years, he's begun to question his presence on Titan, and his purpose in general. Still, he's obsessed with destroying the being who murdered him and his family, and has regularly abandoned all his duties to pursue Thanos, wading through armies of hired mercenaries to do so.
