You and Serana walk through Dawnstar on your way to the hidden Santurary. In between tripping out of your own shoes #447, and rare gem in your shoe for no explained reason #1120 you hear a rumor passed between the guards.
"They say a pirate from a far-off land is selling his ship in Windhelm."
(OOC: Miscellaneous quest added: Inquire about the Pirate Ship for Sale in Windhelm.)

(OOC: I'll work on the Dark Brotherhood's Shrouded Armor's stats later; she will have put it on earlier before we left, but is wearing a black cloak with a hood over it; with the hood currently lowered in her back. ^_^)
Anaya Rosethorne
-A pirate ship, Anaya said to Serana as they passed the guards. That could be interesting. We have a castle, several houses all over Skyrim and many other things, but no ship. It could be interesting to try one out sometime. I think I'll head over there sometime soon, she said on a conversational tone as they walked. Hahaha. Listen to me... buy a boat. What's next, a farm? ...But seriously, I'd like that. What about you, love? Any big projects you've been thinking about?

"Not a whole lot." Serana said. "I was thinking of maybe redecorating Fort Dawnguard... A shame to let that place just sit there so empty now that Isran and his band of genocidal maniacs are not around. I mean surely we can get a few friends to move in? Start making crossbows, and armored trolls for us to use."
You arrive at the sanctuary and enter, you find Cicero at his usual spot guarding the Night Mother.
"Oooooh, the Listener. It is good you have shown up as I thought. Come come, follow meeee. We must talk with the others about this turn of events." He says running downstairs. "Gather round everyone, the listener is here, we must plan now!"

-A most excellent suggestion, my dearest, the Dragonborn agreed. Ha... we could perhaps have our very own vampire-hunting vampires, for example. Their main duties would be the upkeep of the fort, maintaining its crossbow making, troll training facilities and hunting down the feral vampires preying on and killing mindlessly and foolishly whoever they come across, thus endangering the rest of us. Hmm... it does sound like an interesting prospect.
Upon arriving to the Sanctuary, Anaya spoke the passphrase and entered it, leading the way in, before allowing Cicero to take the lead and announce them in.
-Hail Sithis, brothers and sisters. It is good to see you again. Let us proceed then... so, this is about rival assassins stealing our kills?

nazir steps up. "Correct. Over the last 2 months reports of Assassins stealing contracts from the Dark Brotherhood have become increasingly frequent initially we were willing to write them off as a fluke, however recently two Initiates we sent to Riften ran afoul with one of said assassins. "They did not survive the encounter."
"These guys are good." Babette said. "Very good. Possibly as strong as the Listener herself. That is why we have summoned you here nightsister. We believe these assassins would make excellent additions to our order. Failing that we must eliminate them at any cost."
"A warning..." Nazir says. "We suspect these assassins are werebeasts of a sort. There are reports of them taking the forms of wolves, cats, and even a strange long-necked creature."

-Possibly as strong as me, the Listener repeated, gravely; I didn't even know it was possible. Clavicus Vile told me I was roughly at the level of a slightly weakened Daedric Prince. I defeated Alduin. Sheogorath even suggested I might have more power than Tiber Septim had prior to ascending as one of the Divines. I can't say if he was sincere, but... If a group of assassins is that powerful... chances are they are either not mortals, or possibly...
She looked at Serana:
-...possibly not from this world. This could be bad...
She looked back at her fellow assassins, resolute.
-Alright. I need your help, brothers and sisters. I need to know all that you can tell me. Locations, names, rumors?

"From what we have heard, they are currently on the Black Briar's payroll, so Riften's a good place to start looking. As for names. Lucci Rob, Kaku, Jabra, Blueno, Kalifa, Kurodori, and Fukuro.

Anaya frowned, visibly upset. She slammed her fist on the table close to her.
-What?! ...The Black-Briars? ...Dammit. Maven, what the hell? The Black-Briar family has always turned to us to handle her more serious cleanup jobs. And she knows I'm also the leader of the Thieves' guild, which is basically her biggest ally in Riften, and most of all the major cities! Why in the world is she hiring other assassins and sending them against us? ...The Black-Briars are stabbing themselves in the back by doing this. It makes no bloody sense, unless she ignores her assassins are attacking allies of mine...
She paused, folding her arms.
-...That might be it. Maven Black-Briar might not even know her assassins are fighting us. If she did, maybe she'd reconsider hiring their services, and then we could suggest them joining forces with us if only to ensure they have the Black-Briar's political power and the Thieves' guild behind them, which will ease their activities in all of Skyrim. I'm going to Riften, I must speak with Maven directly and get to the bottom of this. I need one of our best fighters with me... there might be trouble. Nazir... Cicero? One of you in?
Whoever joined her, she asked Serana:
-What about you, love? Do you feel like facing assassins potentially as dangerous as me?

"With all due respect Listener, it is to be expected for Maven to be seeking out new employment, you have been turning down a lot of her requests lately." He says referring to your recent cracking down on what jobs you would allow to be done for the Black-Briar family. Maven was the main reason riften was such a wrecthed hive, while you were leading criminals, you still had something of a heart, and didn't want to be responsible for Riften being a complete hellhole.
So you started turning down a few jobs. Stopped killing, or robbing anyone just because Maven dangled a sack of gold in your face.
"Apparantly, Maven doesn't like taking no for an answer." Serana says. "Sounds like fun."
"Ohhhh, I shall be happy to accompany you as well Listener, a foe of this caliber will be a perfect chance to sharpen my skills."
"I'm sorry Listener, but with all due respect, I feel it is best babette and I remain here, and continue to run the sanctuary in your absence." Nazir says.
(OOC:
Now Objectives: -Find and deal with the rival assassins. -(Optional) Confront Maven over her hiring new assassins. -(Optional) Convince the Rival Assassins to Join the Dark brotherhood.

"With all due respect Listener, it is to be expected for Maven to be seeking out new employment, you have been turning down a lot of her requests lately."
Anaya nodded:
-I see what you mean. Still, we only turned down the really ridiculous offers. We still accepted jobs to kill many thorns in her side... I do have a heart, like you said, though. I fail to see why we should assassinate good people just because they annoy her. If Maven had more common sense, she'd use fewer assassins and more political pull. Getting everyone killed left and right for a yes or a no will only attract useless attention. Heck, I could even live with her hiring other assassins to do the dirty work we turn down, if not for the bloody fact that they attack our own men!
"Apparantly, Maven doesn't like taking no for an answer. Sounds like fun."
Anaya frowned; this was apparently a touchy subject with her. For more or less two years now, she had dealt with Maven in various ways, as Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, Master of the Thief Guild, as the Dragonborn, even. And despite all this, the woman and her wicked family were still never taking no for an answer and still saw anyone else as their inferior.
-Maven is forgetting that it is merely through my actions, and those of my peers from the Brotherhood and the Thief Guild, that she ever regained all that she had lost. She is forgetting that without me, without us, her enemies would eat her up alive. She's forgetting that she is no longer the biggest fish in the pond, because admitting that would give a very severe blow to her overgrown ego. She's also forgetting that she's not irreplaceable anymore. She needs us much more than we need her... and even if she was gone, there will always be nobles with wealth and power to hire the Brotherhood. I am growing tired of her vanity and arrogance... If she doesn't listen to reason, then I believe a change in the balance of power in Riften, and all over Skyrim, will soon become inevitable.
"Ohhhh, I shall be happy to accompany you as well Listener, a foe of this caliber will be a perfect chance to sharpen my skills."
-I knew I could count on you, Cicero. You are most welcome.
"I'm sorry Listener, but with all due respect, I feel it is best babette and I remain here, and continue to run the sanctuary in your absence."
-I agree... I just didn't want you to feel left out, Nazir. I trust the safety of the Sanctuary into your and Babette's capable hands. If for some reason they attack here, give them hell... although I doubt Maven would order them to take us on so directly.
She turned to face the assembled assassins:
-Keep up the good work and be on your guard at all times. If those assassins are as strong as they seem to be, we will need to be extremely careful until the threat is neutralized. I will consult the Night Mother and then me, Serana and Cicero will make our way to Riften. Any questions? (If any, she'd answer. If not...) ...All hail Sithis!
She then walked towards the Night Mother's coffin, to pray and attempt to contact her.

You reach the Night Mother. "Listener... You come seeking knowledge on the rival assassins." It was more a statement than a question.

"I do", the Dragonborn thought, kneeling, her eyes closed. "I also seek your guidance regarding Maven Black-Briar. I am beginning to believe Maven has outlived her usefulness for Skyrim, and that it would fare far better without her and most of her family... And I hoped to learn what the Night Mother thought of my feelings. It is my hope to serve you and Sithis as best I can, killing the relics of the past to make way for the future. Please, Night Mother... would you show me the way?" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 stones into Social Skills plus 3 from Attractive, to ask the Night Mother about the Assassins and whether she thinks I should rid Skyrim of the Black-Briar family's influence.

"The assassins you seek have come here from another plane, much like Oblivion. A world of near endless water, populated by many beings on par with the greatest warriors of Nirn. Be warned all of these assassins are very powerful fighters, masters of secret arts that turn their own bodies into weapons deadly as any blade, or bow, and some bearing the added power of a cursed fruit granting them special powers in exchange for never being able to swim again." The Night Mother says.
"As for the Black-Briars... They have been good patrons, and allies of our order, but alas Maven has grown greedy, power hungry, and desperate... A change in the matronship of the family will surely be good way of showing your will shall not be denied. Ingun will know better than to bite the hand that feeds her."

The Listener felt concerned about the threat posed by the opposing assassins. She was beginning to wonder if anyone else had the might necessary to fight them... Still, they had a weakness. That much could be used against them, and it would possibly compensate for their strengths. Still... she was more hoping to make them join her than defeat them.
On the other hand, she smiled when the Night Mother mentioned Ingun.
"Ingun was indeed my first choice as replacement for her mother. She is smart, cooperative, mostly uninterested in the power struggles at work in Skyrim... and she hates her family. She will be a good ally to both the Thief Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, thus allowing us to run things behind the scene", she thought back approvingly. She then waited a handful of seconds, to make sure the Night Mother had nothing else to add, before thanking her and taking her leave.

The night mother says nothing. Just a silence of approval.
