Since Imaginaries is going nowhere fast I was going to do a hellboy/BPRD style game, not in that universe but same sort of fight the monsters and the occult type vibe

I've been toying with the idea... and just when I start to feel confident with MHRPG, enough to run a game, I run into some confusion in the games I play in and my confidence crumbles. :-p

Sooooo, the 5th Edition D&D DMG comes out next week, I think. Anyone fancy a game? I might run one..

I'd play 5th Edition to learn what it's all about.

I've been enjoying my skim of the PHB so far!

I've been trying to enjoy it for what it is. It isn't the system I'm looking for, but it's close enough that I think it's worth playing. What I ultimately want out of D&D is somewhere between Pathfinder and 5th Edition: more simple/elegant than Pathfinder, but with more customization and replay value than 5e. However, because it's so simple it's really easy to throw together a campaign and just have some fun, and so I think I will. ^__^ I wrote a campaign for Pathfinder that I never had a chance to run, and I'm in the process of converting it to 5e. So far, so good. I'd play 5th Edition to learn what it's all about. I think it's a pretty easy system to pick up. Character creation is very fast, as there aren't that many decisions to make. Like MURPG and Marvel Heroic, the focus is more on narrative than on nitty-gritty stats and bean-counting. That makes it ideal for play-by-post, I figure. I'll let you know when I get a recruitment thread up! It won't be long, I figure maybe by next week? I probably just need a couple days to cut through the DMG once it's out. ~TWF

I'm hoping the DMG will have some more varied class options (ie perhaps some setting specific ones: Wizards of High Sorcery from Dragonlance, Planescape factions, etc).

Me too! Rumour is that there are a bunch of optional rules in there, at least. I hope there are more backgrounds, too.
For a game that was playtested by the community for like a year, though, it sure feels.. unfinished. And in some really obvious ways, too. For example, the Paladin's mount is now a spell that summons a specific creature to you. It's kind of a cool idea, but they neglected to mention anything about the mount getting stronger over time. So, if you're a halfling Paladin and you chose a mastiff as your mount, it will always have 5 HP. By 2nd level, basically every monster can and will kill that in one hit, and any AoE spell will wipe it out instantly. It's easy to house-rule it so that they get the same HP as a Ranger's companion (4hp/level) but it boggles the mind as to why this wasn't included from the get-go.
I'm already compiling a small list of house rules like this, and I'm hoping a bunch of them are in the DMG. I don't like to HR too much; it just bogs things down.
The good thing is that the classes seem easy to add to and modify, and I'm sure they'll provide more content with subsequent books.

Same vibe and observation here, and I've just been patiently awaiting release of that DMG before I start bending and tweaking anything.

I heard from a friend who runs a gaming store that there's an early release program where some stores are dropping the DMG tomorrow (the 28th). I wonder if I might be able to get my hands on one early..
