You ever heard of something called the Seven Year Rule?
It's usually for Pro-Wrestling, but I do think it can apply to comic book characters too.

You hate the idea of Captain America being black now? That's racist. Yep, that's me, racist. I hate the idea of Cap being anyone other than Steve Rogers. First of all, we've seen it before. SO MANY TIMES. Second of all, why the $#@! would Falcon be the new Cap? Even if I look past the politically correct nonsense that says the new guy has to be black, there are already 3 $#@!ING BLACK GUYS WITH SUPER SOLDIER-RELATED POWERS. Isaiah & Eli Bradley & Lamar Hoskins. Remember them? It's all so $#@!ing stupid and pointless. I mean, geeze, we JUST had an alternate Cap a couple of years ago, and if they HAD to do it again, what exactly was wrong with "promoting" Patriot??? Probably because none of those characters were in the big blockbuster Captain America movie this year.

Probably because none of those characters were in the big blockbuster Captain America movie this year. Well heck, Nick Fury and Black Widow were in that movie, why not make one of THEM the new Captain America? In the end, this idiotic move will only end up being reversed within 18 months, and will result in diminishing both Steve Rogers AND Sam Wilson. It's the "Dick Grayson rule." Dick Grayson has never benefited as a character from his times as Batman. Being treated as basically a clone replacement body for the primary hero only hurts a former sidekick, it never helps.

*Points at Wally West*
Me, and millions of other fans would disagree with you.

Who, me or WK? Because I don't like the changes made to Wally. And not because they made him black. I am fine with that though I thought it was unnecessary. It is all of the other changes they made that weren't needed in the first place.
Edit: Oh! You mean when Wally took over as Flash. Never mind, carry on.

I like Wally enough to not like how the Nu52 completely changed his background and personality...

I like Wally enough to not like how the Nu52 completely changed his background and personality... Last time I checked, comic books with millions of readers were pretty rare... and even then, it's not safe to assume that all of them are passionately invested in that particular incarnation of that particular character. I read Batman for a long time despite basically thinking Batman is the worst thing in comic books. I suspect that a lot, probably even most, readers of The Flash honestly don't care if it's Barry or Wally 8)

Well, yeah it is true there aren't a million readers of a single comic. The relaunch of Amazing Spider-Man from a few months ago was considered to be a huge success despite gaining half a million copies. And the fact that a lot of people watched Justice League doesn't mean they are interested in the comics. Especially since the latest DC animated movies has Barry Allen in the role.

So any claim that there are millions of Wally West fans who just adored him as The Flash and are incensed at Barry's return is patently absurd.

I normally don't play canon characters, as I feel that it is particularly hard to make them justice. Writing a comic would be the ultimate "I don't want to piss off anyone" challenge, but deep down I know that such a thing is impossible. Dodging that particular insecure feeling I tend to have, and considering that I could stop caring about pleasing everyone...
DC: I was a big Hal Jordan and Barry Allen fan back in the day, but I can't connect with their current comics right now, and I don't know why. Maybe is just the passage of time. I read almost no DC comics monthly, and since the last reset I'm trapped into a "Lets check this new comic -> I don't like this new comic" cycle. I probably would end writing a comic with Hal Jordan and a bunch of misfit heroes trapped in the midst of some crazy galactic conflict. As I write those words it sounds like some kind of bastard child of Dreadstar but yeah.
Marvel: Knowing myself and my love for dysfunctional powers and drama, I would probably end up writing some kind of New/Young something. Probably with too much drama and too little punching, but yeah. I would try a smaller group of Midnight Sons, 50/50 new/old characters, chasing Darkhold pages and trying to live with the craziness their lives have turned into.
