This is most likely going to become Benedict Cumberbatch's iconic role (side by side with Sherlock or it'll surpass it). Benedict should be given the benefit of doubt, so far he hasn't failed a role and is currently one of the most wanted actors. The pressure is on for him as well, he has to carry an unknown superhero movie, bring a new element (literally) to the MCU & a possible franchise.

I'm optimistic, but I've only really ever seen Cumberbatch in Sherlock. He's a pretty solid actor, so I think he'll be able to carry the movie well enough; any problems will come from the way they decide to approach it and less from his performance. Also, the film's director tweeted this image today:

A lot of people already know him as Sherlock, and it's hard to change that first impression for most people. Most people always identify an actor with the first notable role they had seen them in. However, I do agree that with the widespread success of these comic book movies, I think Dr. Strange will introduce Cumberbatch to even more people. A lot will depend on the success of the movie, I guess. Marvel hasn't really done much with magic yet (they've tried pretty hard in the Thor series to avoid it, in fact) so to a minor extent it's uncharted and risky territory.

It depends entirely on what they do with it. If they keep up with the "no magic" BS, there is no way this movie won't suck, no matter who is in it.

Is it even possible to do Doctor Strange without magic? Or are they going to make him an Inhuman and then he'll be all "what you call 'magic', I call an inborn, natural affinity for the supernatural". It's not "magic", it's a super power! Like Scarlet Witch!

It would be hilarious if he has to spend 2/3rds of the movie pausing to explain that no, what he's doing is not magic, it's just really advanced technology!

"The Eye of Agamotto is a super high-tech channeling device that lets me take potential energy from the world around me and convert it into other forms of energy, entirely. What you call 'magic', I call 'sophisticated technology'. Oh, that demon I summoned? Why, all I did was bend space and time to open a portal from another dimension. With science. Not magic. Duh."

Now before my phone freeze's again, Kevin Feige says Magic exists. Fuck everything. I'm out for the day.

Sorry for double post but I wanted it to be clear that I mean that Kevin said Doc Strange will be bringing the supernatural into the Marvel franchise. If that doesn't mean magic, then I have no idea what it means. But seriously, Apple can go fuck themselves for this bullshit I had to deal with just to post that.

BE- just click on the "DESKTOP" link at the bottom, Pro-Boards mobile site blows (which, not that I'm one to defend apple often... isn't their fault)
Ahem, that said.
Cumberbatch does VERY well as Sherlock, and I think he did fantastic as Khan in the latest Star Trek movie as well.
==========
As for Magic Vs. Tech... the movies were NOT the first time that stance has been taken by Marvel. ESPECIALLY in Thor comics. They've equated them before, art has mingled them before, it's not new. It's far from popular, but not new. I've gone on my rants regarding PERCIEVING Magic as a Science before. Many call that a stretch, but it is what it is. IIRC they never said that there WASN'T magic, just that what humans SEE as magic, they deem science. Been awhile, so I'm not quoting. Maybe that's how my Thor-FanBoy mind rationalizes that line away, whatever. "Any sufficiently advanced Technology is indistinguishable from magic" -Arthur C Clarke
Same with Odin telling Thor they aren't Gods. That's been hashed before in older issues. In the Comics, they're just potent beings worshipped as Gods. Same with all of the other pantheons.
ADD to that, the MULTIPLE times that EVERY flavor/type of magick has ever been depicted in Doctor Strange- Technomagick has been among them. blending Tech and Sorcery into something resembling advanced science. One of the Dopplegangers created after Salome' siezed the Sorcerer Supreme mantle from Doc was actually adept at Mentalism and Technomagick (the later he used to control The Hulk at one point... aewsome cover art).
Anyhow. That all said.
Bring on the supernatural, embrace the occult... give us The REAL Doctor Strange... not some "Ultimate" metal gauntlet wearing hyperphysicist. That'll crush me. I may never watch another Marvel movie, or buy another Marvel product of any flavor again. Ruin this for me Matvel, and we're done. I forgave you the X-Men, I ignore the messes that were pre DoFP and the latest Wolverine movie. This is the one thing I've ever asked. Do it right! The old movie, and even the animated one were ok,.. but PLEASE.

Or are they going to make him an Inhuman and then he'll be all "what you call 'magic', I call an inborn, natural affinity for the supernatural". It's not "magic", it's a super power! Like Scarlet Witch! ... with the exact same hand-wavy BS that they used in Thor. They didn't even bother to explain HOW his hammer let him fly or controlled weather, they just said "Oh, that? Don't be silly, it's SCIENCE!" There's no reason they can't do the same stupid thing all over again. "Well, yes, I invoke the names of alien creatures, and yes, there are swirly visual effects everywhere, but trust me, its all just nanites... or something." I REALLY hope I'm wrong. I truly hope that this is finally the "there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy" moment for the MCU... but I have absolutely no confidence in that actually happening. They've gone so far out of their way to pronounced "NO WIRE HANGARS MAGIC EVAR!" that to reverse it now will bring up more questions than it will create answers, like how $#@!ing Odin was so stupid... But hey, at least its not the DC movieverse.
