Due to weird scheduling the movie premiered around here a week early, so of course I went last night to see it. There are no real spoilers in the next section, I just talk of the general structure and feel of the movie, but in case anyone was to go completely untainted by my words to see it I'm going to spoilertag it anyways. It's a good movie, but not as good as it could be. The burden of an origin story in a movie that barely reaches the two hours with credits and all makes it feel rushed out. The characters are pretty good, what it's certainly a boon for a character driven movie as it is, but since they don't have enough time to develop things, some characters can feel undeveloped. The visuals are amazing and the movie is funnier than I thought, but it fits.
Beware, it has one scene after the fancy credits and another at the very end.

Thanks for the heads up about the stingers! It always drives me nuts when people leave as soon as the credits start rolling in a Marvel (or, these days, really any comic book) movie. HOW DO THEY NOT KNOW TO STAY?

I saw it last night, IMAX 3D. I had a lot of fun; it's a very nice little piece of candy, which is all you can expect from a superhero origin story. Solid cast, flawless special effects, tight enough story, cool fight sequences, lots of laughs, and the addition of real magic gives the MCU a much needed shot in the arm. To get more specific, I need to break out the spoiler tag: There are a couple of details I enjoyed about this movie that I think are worth mentioning:
1. Dr. Strange's character growth is one that we haven't quite seen yet in a comic book movie. Strange's story is about a narcissist learning to step back and appreciate a world that is bigger than just himself, and I dig that. It starts out looking like Tony Stark's story - wealthy genius gains super powers en route to curing an injury sustained in an accident of his own doing - but once he meets The Ancient One, it establishes itself as something unique.
There are also some similarities with Thor's story about becoming worthy of Mjolnir, but whereas Thor needed to learn maturity and understand the consequences of his actions as the heir to the throne of Asgard, Strange has to put his own ego aside and, as Mordo puts it, grow a spine. Thor already has power and the will to wield it, but must learn to do so wisely; in contrast, Strange has to earn his power first, and be convinced to actually use it. In many ways they're mirror images of each other, but ultimately wind up in the same place (which is why I thought the first stinger scene was fun).
2. These Marvel super hero debut movies usually suffer from a pattern of having a great origin story in the first half of the movie, at the expense of building a meaningful relationship between the hero and the villain. The result is usually a rather boring, telegraphed showdown between the hero and villain that the audience is sort of forced to sit through because it's simply how these things go. The hero always fights and beats the villain in the end, right?
What I like about Dr. Strange is that, while there are major villains in the film, and Strange does technically beat them both, it's all done as a part of his character development. The real story arc doesn't end with Strange defeating The Big Bad, it ends with Strange setting aside his own ego and accepting a burden simply because it is the right thing to do. Kaecillius and Dormamu just happen to be obstacles along that path, not the destination itself. And I found that a little refreshing.
3. Likewise with the lack of a love interest story. Strange and his ex-lady-friend do share some relationship growth, but it isn't a "and the hero gets the girl" storylines at all. She isn't his motivation that drives the plot, at all, and she isn't his reward for doing the right thing, either. She is just one of many relationships that develop throughout the course of the story, specifically one that ties him to his old, normal life. Again, refreshing.
4. I actually sympathize somewhat with the villain. Kaecillius makes a few good points about morality and the Ancient One's hypocrisy that not only gives the audience something to think about, but which clearly had a profound effect on some of the other characters in the movie, too. It's not like he showed much remorse about what he felt he had to do, nor his methods, but at least his goal wasn't money, or power, or "I'MMA DO SOME EVIL BECAUSE I'M EVIL AND SUCH". It was enough variety that I didn't feel like I was sitting through the same damn movie for the nth time.
Anyway, just a list of some good stuff. Not great, but good. ~TWF

Did you guys see it in 3D or 2D? And either way, what did you think of the effects?
I generally don't like 3D and typically avoid it if I can, but I figured if there's any movie to shell out for, it's this one. I thought it looked good, and was worth the price bump. It has the usual problems, like looking kinda dark in the corners, and seeming blurry/out of focus in parts, but there were a few breathtaking scenes that were very memorable in 3D.

I honestly don't like much 3D because most of the time it's not worth it and it hurt like hell to look trough 2 pair of glasses! But I did watch it in 3D and it was awesome, effects included, I wish I could learn the mystic arts too ha ha!
