This is not an interest check. Don't get me wrong, I like Power Rangers, and at one point tried to get a game going, but that's not what this thread is about. Really I just thought I'd share something I've found that could be a great source for those interested in trying to do a Power Rangers/Super Sentai game. While surfing the net, and checking out Drive Thru RPG I found two RPG books for playing Sentai games, and I thought I'd share it here as well as some thoughts I've had after looking through them. First up if Sentai Spectacular. Sentai Spectacular is a third party RPG using the OGL material from D20 Modern. It adds a new basic class, Sentai Hero, which has it's own sets of talent trees depending on what ranger color you pick. If you've played D20 modern, you know exactly where this book goes with Sentai. THe only change is that when you take the Sentai class, you pick a color. Each color adds a skill or two to your class skills, or a bonus to skills that are already class skills for the Sentai class. Another thing Color does is add a couple of free feats. Meaning if you want to play a certain color with a particular role in mind...Forget it. Black ranger is always going to be the stealth expert, Blue is always going to be the smart guy (seeing as he gets all Knowledge skills as class skills), and the Green Ranger is Always going to be the Wilderness Survival enthusiast. The Color determines your role in the group, with attributes, skill points, and talents being the only variables. Also you HAVE to have the Red, Blue, and Yellow rangers in your group in order to include any others. Rules for Mecha are provided in this book so you have Zords. THe only problem is...no Megazord. That's right, there are no rules for making the Megazord for that you must get Sentai Sequel. Meaning you'll have to shell out $6.00 as of my posting this to get the rules for making the Megazord. Sentai Sequel isn't just for the rules for Megazord, it offers additional colors for a Sentai group, even offers rules for playing a Campaign along the lines of Power Rangers seasons 1-5 where rangers were changing colors at certain points. It also offers more talent trees, available for multiple colors. There are no rules for creating monsters, or foot soldiers for the villains, but it does offer templates which you can add to Monsters from D20 Modern, or D&D Monster Manual. The other game I found for Sentai is called Super Happy Sentai Hour. at the time of this post it is $2.99 at Drive Thru RPG. It runs on two D6. One die being white, the other being your Ranger Color. the die matching your ranger color explodes on a 6 (meaning you roll it again until you get something other than a six and add them to the total). The Color roles I mentioned with Sentai Spectacular are in this book too (What is it with forcing a role on a color). Blue is going to be the smart guy, Red is going to be the leader, Green however instead of being the Survival Nut is instead the Jerk, who intentionally goes against the grain of the group. White is the only exception to this, instead of having a role, both dice he rolls explode. This is nothing a house rule can't fix, but still it kind of erks me that the ranger colors are forced into a role. Zords and Megazords are here, no sourcebook needed, although your a little S.O.L. if you plan to run a campaign with additional rangers showing up at different points with new Zords to enhance the Megazord. There are no rules for Zords like Titanus/King Brachion which was an enhancement to the Megazord/Daizyuzin, nor for the Dragonzord/Dragon Caesar, which was able to form a Megazord on it's own or become an enhancement for the original. So having an additional ranger show up mid-campaign is out of the question until you get the supplement. There are rules for making monsters of the week, and the minions you see every episode which is nice, along with a suggestion for how many you might want to have made for the campaign. It even has a sample Evil Empire that you can throw into the game (Although I'd save it for a more humorous campaign). If your wondering how I know a supplement for this game is in the works, it's because 1) the publishers have a facebook page, and 2) it's advertised in the back of the book saying it will have the options for Add-on mecha, Additional Colors, new monster rules, vehicles and carriers for Campaigns inspired by pre-mecha Sentai shows (like J.A.K.Q.), and rules for campaigns inspired by Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. I have no idea when this supplement comes out, but I'm definitely getting it. I know I kind of griped about the roles, but again it's nothing that can't be houseruled if your inclined to do so, and after reading it, I kind of like how it handles Sentai a little more than Sentai Spectacular. You're not stuck using D&D for monsters of the week, character creation (both ranger and monster) is ridiculously quick. Also while there's only 7 options for colors. Red is the only one you absolutely must have in the group. Other colors are optional.

Nice to know those options out there, specially with systems that try to be as simple as possible. The thing is that even if the personality of the bearer of each color tends to follow certain patterns, shoehorning each color in a specialized way seems a little bit too much.

Yeah, that's why I like Super Happy Sentai Hour, it's a rules lite game (only 48 pages in all), and as I mentioned the specialized role of each color is easy to change without having to make a lot of adjustments.

I did not even bother with the d20 one, because I don't care for that system. This sounds like an awesome game though, cannot wait to read through it.

I'm glad you like it. Oh and while I did say having a sixth ranger showing up mid-campaign was out of the question, I should have clarified a bit. It's okay if the new Ranger's zord is used to make a new Megazord with the others (Like the Tigerzord From Season 2 of MMPR), but the Dragonzord is going to be limited to the Battle mode until the supplement book comes out. That is unless you're willing to make up a rule to cover the Mega Dragonzord and Ultra Megazord.

I have not had a chance to read through it yet but I have flipped through it and I am pretty impressed - the whole pigeon whole colors and annoying but that is easy to fix. Just take all of the "color bonuses" and pool them and have the player pick whatever bonus they want. Though I think the Green Ranger needs a a new bonus. Is there rules for combining weapons and power crystals? I actually recently started to watch he old school MMPR on netflix - I have not got to far into it but it brings back good memories and beside he corny factor - has aged decently. I stopped liking/watching the Power Rangers after the Zeo rangers? Whatever season the Gold Ranger was in.

Yeah, I'm still reading it too, I've got the gist of the rules, but not quite the specifics. There is a rule for Megablasters on page 12. It doesn't actually involve combining weapons, but you can have the combining weapons as a description of the action. The Rules for Action Tokens on page 14 might also fit the Combining weapons.
I've stopped watching power rangers around season 3, (playing with friends kind of made it difficult) though I caught the first two episodes of zeo, and the Turbo movie. Lately I've been watching the occasional episode, and I've watched the Sentai series the footage comes from, which is just as corny, but really cool as well. I finished Zyuranger, and Dairanger (Seasons 1 and 2 of MMPR) Trying to find Kakuranger which is where Alien Rangers came from.

I think after Zeo, the show lost its heart in a way. I could not get into the other incarnations for some reason. The alien rangers were cool - and I forget if the whole ninja thing with new zoids was just the movie or part of the show. I need to keep reading through it though. I am pretty impressed so far. Speaking of show - I like when they first got their powers Zordan talked about only escalate if you have too, which is a cool concept. So, you just don't try to punch all of your problems away - try to be creative first.

THe Ninja zords were part of the show, although the Power Rangers got them in a different order than the Sentai they came from. To be honest I've gotten into the Sentai pretty easy. It's just as corny, but still awesome. It's also interesting to see them work their way up, as they actually don't get their zords at the start, and when they do get them it's a few more before you see them combine, and even further before upgrade zords show up. Also it made me rethink how weird it was for Justin to be in the group for Turbo, since the Kiba Ranger in Dairanger (White Ranger in MMPR) was around eight to ten years old.

Huh - ya, I am pissed, I just double checked netflix and the MMPR seasons are gone! They have Zeo on there but thats it. So looks like I will be watching Zeo, lol! What are the original Sentai show(s) called? I have been meaning to check out Kamen Rider but I cannot find it anywhere and the DVDs are stoopid expensive. It is funny, if you can handle/get past the cornyness and teen drama of it all, the concept, stories, action, and all of that jazz are actually really good. I still need to read through the rules but I have high hopes for them. Any thoughts on a different skill to replace the one the Green Ranger offers?

Well...there's a lot of them, if your wanting the ones that became Power Rangers, here's the names. For a while you could see these on Youbtube, but it's become hard for me to find them there now. I'm checking search engines to find sites to view them on. Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (Season 1 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers) Gosei Sentai Dairanger (Season 2 Thunder Zords, and White Ranger) Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (Season 3 Ninja Zords, Alien Rangers) Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (Zeo) These are the ones I'm aware of are online. I have not been able to find a Subbed version of Ohranger (Could never get into the Dubbed), and am still looking for Kakuranger. A more extensive list can be found here. I'm not coming up with any particular ideas.

My personal experience with Sentai Series is a bit funny, because just before a Spanish TV started to air Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Basque television (yes, in Basque language) somehow managed to air Jetman. That way I ended up being used to the original source, and had trouble connecting with MMPR. Besides that, I quite enjoyed the crazy homage that is Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger and the funny antics of Akibaranger.

Ok, now I'm sorry I made the complaint about the roles. Instead of just giving the Green Ranger a new role, let's just rename it Independent, and make the +3 apply when he's not acting as part of the group. Besides I think these are open to GM interpretation so the Green saying 'I'm only following your orders because I feel like it' to Red would probably count toward the +3 as opposed to outright antagonizing Red and lone wolfing it like Wolverine in X-Men.
As for the Sentai, seeing the source material for the First Season of Power Rangers was pretty funny, since I actually started noticing when the scene I was watching was footage that was used. Certain episodes (The Dragon Ranger's first few episodes) could have become drinking games if you were so inclined. I've never heard of Akibaranger, is it any good?

Do not regret it - I am enjoying it and actually I am almost done. My original idea for the green ranger special skill was to give them a +2 to all skills that directly effect him and when he takes an action that does not benefit him he loses that bonus. Though, I like your idea a lot better. The doc is going well, should be done by this weekend.
