I've never heard of Akibaranger, is it any good? It's a comedy featuring a trio of "unofficial" rangers (as they call themselves, despite being made by Toei too) lead by a Super Sentai series fan who uses his knowledge of the tropes of the series to his advantage. Is a goofy parody and a heartfelt homage all at once, featuring a ton of cameos from official Sentai. I found it incredibly amusing, but being comedy I'd say that it could be hit or miss, depending on each viewer.

Super Happy Sentai Companion is out. I just got my hands on it, and flipping through it as I'm typing this. THere are no rules about changing the Sentai Roles, so house rules are needed. On the other hand they add new roles, such as Orange who is helpful, Purple the Marysue (I'm not kidding their skill is Marysue, and it's exactly what you think), Silver the Mystic, and finally Gold, the Judge Dredd of Sentai. Seriously reading his skill LAW had me picturing Judge Dredd in a Sentai. There's rules for making Henshin heroes, like Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Spider-man (No not Comic book Spidey). Basically instead of roles you have skills, and you pick one. You roll stats just like a Sentai character, but three of your stats get a +1. You can also decide if the Henshin character gets a Mecha, Grows like the Monster of the Week, or does without. There's also rules for Add-on Mecha so you can now have a Dragonzord styled mecha in the group, as well as rules for Mecha Carriers, like Tor, and Supervehicles for those GMs who want to do Pre-mecha Sentai games. On top of all of this is a set of charts to make the team mascot (Think Alpha 5), new templates for Monsters, stats for Mook Commanders, as well as templates to add on to mooks for different themes, like ninjas who get the initiative in the first round of combat. Paramilitary (When you determine how many of them are in a fight, you can instead have one fight, and the rest become a Damage modifier), Mechanical who roll two dice instead of one, Chameleons with the ability to disguise themselves and Feral which basically only lose half their number to Sentai attacks. There's also rules for playing bad guys, and a pre-made setting, including two Sentai Teams.

It strikes me as weird that a game based on something so plot driven as a Sentai Show, isn't a bit more lenient with the application of rules, but at least seems to offer plenty of options.

Well I think the writers involved had more of an interest in war games before making this one. I recall somewhere in SHSH the author mentioned planning to make a Wargame around Sentai before going the RPG route instead.
