Just thought I'd introduce myself! I played MURPG a few years back but haven't managed to get a group together in quite a while. But it looks like I have a few interested players so I'm going to try to get back into it! I can see myself coming here for some rules questions since I am sorta "new" to the game. In the sense that I've only GM'd 2 campaigns and that was ages ago. Glad to see there are other people out there playing the game though! I wasn't sure if there would be a community out there since the books were so short lived.

Welcome! We have the answers to any rule question1, discussions about everything superhero and a good chunk of games going on. Hope you enjoy the stay!
1: Sometimes the answer could be on the line of "the rules suck, get creative", but still will try to come up with a solution.

Welcome aboard, Johnny! Yeah, we've managed to really stretch the game's lifespan around here, with a bunch of house rules and patches, anyway. It turns out that it plays really well online, so here we still are. ^__^

Well done for not giving up on the rules. There was *something* in there that was workable but the rest you need to work round, and most people on teh internetz can't be bothered these days (at least for every time I see MURPG mentioned elsewhere - heh, at least it GETS mentioned...)
It does play well online too so tap one of the GMs up in an existing game if it takes your fancy and you'd like to join in. Other games can be run on here for different systems too, it's all pretty relaxed.

I'm not remotely "rah rah" about the rules themselves. Frankly I think they're complete, unsalvagable crap.
BUT
What I am a cheerleader for is this community. Much better game systems than this one (which is pretty much all of them) have seen the communities built up around them fade as the system changes or better mediums for online play arrive on the scene... this forum community, however, is made up of some really fantastic creative minds and generally decent people, which has allowed it to thrive long past the lifespan of the system in general (or even much better systems).

I personally really enjoy the rules! I do feel there were certain things that never got ironed out since the game was so short lived. So it's great to hear that there are patches/house rules discussed here! This is honestly one of my favourite systems because it allows players to be fully fledged super heroes right off the bat. The longer lasting of my 2 campaigns was House of M based and the players were able to fight off Magneto and some goons in game one. It really made them feel like they could take on the world, which made the experience so cool for them. And I find the system unique/simple enough that we can create new powers/actions and modify them pretty easily. It's obviously flawed in a lot of ways, but it fits my playing style really well. I am NOT a by the numbers kinda guy so GURPS and D&D aren't my GMing speed. But this lets everybody dive in to the action in a really great way.

Wow... this almost brought a tear to my eye. I didn't know WK liked us enough to deem us 'generally decent people'...

Wow... this almost brought a tear to my eye. I didn't know WK liked us enough to deem us 'generally decent people'... I've been on a lot of forums. This is the only one that has kept a certain core of people for this amount of time AND generally fostered a friendly relationship between its members.

...Eeeyup. And we're still going... and going. Even you are still with us despite how often and how much you said you hated the system.

...Eeeyup. And we're still going... and going. Even you are still with us despite how often and how much you said you hated the system. That's my point; I'm not here for the system, I'm here for the people. I tolerate the system because of the creative minds that are collected here.

Also, for what it's worth, I think this message board is really the only group of people that actually play this game anymore. We're an endangered species.

Also, for what it's worth, I think this message board is really the only group of people that actually play this game anymore. We're an endangered species. ... because this game is terrible. I honestly cannot name a worse system that I have ever encountered, and I am, at this point in my career as a gamer, well over 100 systems deep. That this is the worst says a lot about how poorly thought out the system was. The MURPG system accidentally stumbled upon a singular mechanic that bypasses a few of the biggest problems with play-by-post gaming (specifically, decisions-after-the-fact type stuff, and counter-rolling for the most part, though Prescience blows that up). I contribute the fact that it hasn't been supplanted on this forum to those singular elements, and not to any innate quality of the game itself. That virtually every GM who runs the game here has their own set of house rules, many of which directly re-write some element of the mechanics as written pretty well sums up the actual innate quality of the system itself. Sadly, I made the mistake of trying to run this abortion table top a few times. "Trainwreck" doesn't even begin to cover it. Monkeys. Typewriters. ... a lot like Marvel's comics, now, actually...

Welcome to MURPG, where the posts are made up and the stones don't matter.

Sadly, I made the mistake of trying to run this abortion table top a few times. "Trainwreck" doesn't even begin to cover it. Monkeys. Typewriters. The funny thing is that I've played it (not GMd) this game for years with a good result. Then again, it obviously didn't work thanks to the system, but in spite of it (our GM for said years and years of game tends to ignore big chunks of rules from already simple games to streamline things, so you won't see him GMing D&D) But yeah, it works wonders with asynchronous gaming like here (or I guess email, never tried that) Further offtopic note: In my decades of RPG I have found at least one worse system that I can remember. The French game In Nomine Satanis / Magna Veritas and its infamous D666 system. Yes, it was as terrible as you may imagine.

I have the special white hardcover edition with embossed red print. I have the GM screen and the player's guide for that game. ... I would rather play that system than MURPG 8)
