Gears of War: The Songs of Sera
Major Fuller stood at the podium, facing the Olafson Intermediate School’s graduating class of 6 B.E. Before. Emergence. But no one called it that, not yet. Major Fuller beamed with pride and disciplined enthusiasm. He knew he would not see all these faces again, for one reason or another. The Pendulum Wars had entered its 74th year with no sign of stopping. These children would become heroes or tearful memories. This was understood among those not only in the city of Ephyra, but throughout all of the Tyran nation.
Most of these children would die.
He adjusted his grip on a short brass-topped parade stick, an accessory that often accompanied his lectures in the mathematics class. “I think I have called each and every one of you to the board at one point or another, but now I am seeing you off. After today, some of you will be our next best scientists, athletes, and soldiers, but we must not see this as breaking away into separate groups. In fact, we are bettering our Unity. We will all meet again one day. Because no man can exist on his own. No country can, either. That’s why we have the Coalition of Ordered Governments. That’s why we have each other.
“This war will end one day, and you will be the ones to do it.”
He took a moment to look into the eyes of his students, and the faculty that flanked them, and the COG officials sitting in the mezzanine of the school’s theatre. Most of these children would die. “I remember the day you were seated in my class, but now I would like the class of the Coalition of Ordered Governments to please rise!”
*
The planet of Sera has known nothing but war for most of its history. This most recent chapter has endured for 74 years. It all began when a scientist named Dr. Helen Cooper ended mankind’s dependency on nuclear and fossil energy by perfecting the Lightmass Process. This turned an element known as imulsion into cheap fuel and energy for the cities of Sera. The world economy crashed, as the deposits were concentrated beneath most cities rather than widely dispersed throughout the world. The nations were pitted against each other, power and wealth swung in the balance of their conflict, and it is your turn to enter the Pendulum Wars.
You are a graduating student within the Coalition of Ordered Governments, and you are ready to enlist against the Union of Independent Republics. Stones will start at 15w +7w in challenges.
LoE Distribution and Resources
Yes, the stone count is low, but you will experience an aggressive LoE distribution as your character moves through basic. There will be “hubs” within the barracks and fort that can earn your character LoE, and if you’ve ever gamed with me before, you know I reward active RP very generously. I want you to tell me a story as much as I am here to tell you one.
You will also have 1 free resource. This could be a childhood friend, a girl or guy back home, or your family. They can send you “carepackages” as you move through basic. Most of the time I will be building these carepackages on my own based off your submissions, but I am not adverse to any ideas or suggestions from you.
Special Challenges
Defector (-3w) – You are the son or daughter of a family that has defected from the Union of Independent Republics. You will face harassment, suspicion, and distrust at every turn. Can you prove yourself, or will you return to your roots?
Outsider (-3w) – You are not originally from Ephyra City, or Tyrus for that matter. Click the following link for a list of other nations on Sera you could hail from. Despite this challenge, some cities may earn you a bonus to your CAD. gearsofwar.wikia.com/wiki/Sera
Canon Characters and Original Characters
I do not have a preference. If you are familiar with the game and you want to emulate a favorite character, we can figure something out as long as it fits our time frame here in the Pendulum Wars. If you want to come up with your own Gear, that works for me, too. Gears are not restricted by gender; men and women both serve behind or on the front lines. I am very loosely basing this game off the comics and books, very, very loosely. Some characters and instances will be consolidated into your characters’ environments for the purpose of good game play. This will not be 100% accurate to the previously written materials, which brings me to this next bit…
Oh My God, I’ve Never Played “Gears of War”!
Don’t panic, and stop hyper-ventilating into that paper bag of yours. There is a reason this game is taking place during the Pendulum Wars. The Pendulum Wars have not been a focus in the games, mostly novels and comics, so no worries if you haven't played. You just may have to flex some WikiFu. Also, your character is going through basic, a perfect place for you to learn about the weapons and combat of this particular game along with your character. Speaking of which…
Active Cover
Throughout the game you will have cover you can call. Example: Your squad is pinned down in an old church. Think about the general structure of a church; columns, pews, lecterns, etc. This cover will give you defense bonuses in combat, and as your GM I will say this once and only once: I highly, highly recommend you take full advantage of this. This game will not be easy, and your character will get hurt. By the way, not all cover can withstand the bolt action of some of these weapons, so call your covers wisely.
If you have any questions, just let me know. I bark, but I don't bite.
