HISTORY
In time immamorial, the Dragon God Kyr maintained balance between the various races of dragons. Being of all races and none at the same time, he was the most powerful dragon to ever exist. Over time however, other gods saw his power, his worshipers, and became jealous, several rallying their worshipers in a massive purge. The Dragons were practically wiped out, with one dragon of each race remaining. They were effectively extinct, with Kyr raging against the very gods that became jealous of him.
Enter Brian. An unsuspecting dupe in all this, but also a rabid Dragon enthusist. He studied dragons, reading legends of various dragons from Kyr himself, to the legend of St. George and the Dragon to the Welsh Dragons. He knew Dragons weren't real however, only the stuff of legends. So when a box arrived at his house marked fragile, he opened it to find, that in fact, there was a large warm, rainbow colored egg inside. There was no return address, he realized, but it was already too late. He'd opened the box.
He couldn't really return it, and he judged by the size that it wasn't any bird that existed now, so, being mildly opportunist, he kept it, and attempted to hatch it. He spent a good deal of money on an incubator, but nothing he did caused the egg to hatch. Then, in a fit of extreme irony, he was the victim of a home invasion, and during the scuffle, he was thrown at the table where the egg laid. He smashed through it, and the egg was destroyed, but the would be robber ran for it, not willing to persue any further.
As his consciousness waned, he heard a voice, like a dying whisper. It asked him one question "Why..." Then it went silent. The next little while was a frenzied dream state where he was running from... something... he didn't know what. As the creature he was running from found him, the great rainbow dragon god Kyr appeared from the nether. He accused Brian of being irresponsible, allowing his last proginy to be killed in his care.
Brian attempted to defend himself, but Kyr was insenced, and vengeful, but an epiphany overcame him. Instead of just destroying Brian, his soul, and everything he'd ever accomplished, he'd simply curse him. As he revealed, however, it was a dying curse. Kyr was mortally wounded by the other gods, and he knew his race was well and truly dead. His last wish however was that a new Dragon God would arise to replace him, and take vengance on his killers. So he poured the last of his essence, the very life of every race of dragon into Brian. The sheer power was overwhelming, and it threatened to destroy the young man.
Then he awoke, alone, out in the grass somewhere, and he wasn't alone. He noticed several beings off to his left, seemingly examining the contents of his bag. Getting up he chased them off, and retrieved the bag, but not before he saw in the distance, a medieval town. Entering said town, he found that the residents were looking at him funny, as they seemed to be mildly xenophobic. Before he could say anything, he was picked up by the town guard, and brought to a magistrate. He was accused of being a being of magic, and the proof that they needed to convict him was his own personal possessions. His phone was a thing so technologically advanced that it appeared magical enough that he was sentanced to death.
He was brought to the gallows, and not knowing he could defend himself, was hanged, and dumped in an shallow unmarked grave. An hour later, once the people of the town had left, he felt the curse's first effects as life came back to him, his broken neck reset itself and his crushed wind pipe reopened to allow air into his lungs once again. He dug his way out, much to the shock of the Gravekeeper, but he escaped before anything could be done.
It wasn't long before he was acosted in the woods surrounding the town, as unnatural creatures came to feast on the new blood. He was dirty, nearly nude, and carrying nothing to defend himself. Soon he was near death again, and the change came over him as a defense mechanism. His first change was the most traumatic experience of his life. Bordering on childbirth itself, he could feel everything in his body shifting as he grew monstrously tall and broad, become a mighty red fire breathing dragon. He easily beat the creatures acosting him, but as he returned to normal, he realized the second part of Kyr's dying curse. He now could become a dragon.
He found a nearby cave, and hid. For months he experimented, changing and unchaning, shifting between forms, and he realized that he could become many different forms, with many different advantages and disadvantages. Not being a vengeful person, he stayed away from the town he arrived near, and instead made his way south. He soon found himself embroiled in events beyond his control, becomeing hunted, merely for the curse itself. It seemed that many wanted the last of the Dragons to be no more to prevent the return of Kyr or anyone that resembled the rainbow dragon.
Eventually however, he learned to tap into his curse to push himself further. He found that like legend said, Dragons were innately magical beings, and soon he learned that he could effect reality to his will to a certain extent through dragonic magic. It was stronger when he was in Dragon form, but... what wasn't. He also learned that he was ageless, but at a terrible cost. In the events that he became embroiled, he found love for the second time in his life in the form of a woman named Nasiri. Nasiri was perfect to Brian, she looked past the curse, and didn't care if he was a Dragon inside. Nasiri herself was an accomplished witch, and both hid their secrets from the world together. But, though love can last as long as one remains to love, life was not eternal and Nasiri eventually, though longer than a normal human, grew old, and died in his arms. That's when he found the last of the curse. He was well and truly immortal, but he knew inside that there was a caveat. He would live as long as Life itself survived. Should all life be extinguished, he would die the final death.
Most would take this to a nihilistic extreme, becoming obsessed with killing everyone and everything, but Brian did just the opposite, becoming even more ardent in his protective nature, taking on the repsonsibility of protecting the world.. sometimes from itself. For centuries he lived that life. Protecting people in human and dragon form, running when he had to reveal himself fully for fear that those he'd saved would attempt to kill him. Eventually however, even he lost track of the years... He lives now, only to protect, knowing that he might eventually find his way back to his reality, or even better, find final death in a way that wasn't nihilistic.
Who knew... Maybe he would one day find a love as immortal as he....
