Hello there
I've been thinking about trying to run a game set in the world of Runeterra, also better known as League of Legends. I've played it for some time and got tired with it (and started playing Heroes of the Storm instead).
But the characters and lore in the world is still very interesting to me, and I think the way it is written and settup would fit very well with the mechanics in MURPG. Epic battles, great heroes and villainous villains. It just needs a little cleaning so it becomes more rpg-friendly/suitable. The only problem I am having is deciding on how to tackle it since there is so many possibilities.
The only thing I am really certain about is that the players should create their own characters since there can be a very big power difference between some of the already created champions (Bard and Ms. Fortune for example).
Path of a Hero
This idea is basically just singleplay where each player will play out the character's own story. This is basically how most of the characters on Runeterra's story are told. Very few really have the degree of "standing together" that we see in a classical rpg setting.
This type of game could end up becoming a more classical setting though, if some of the characters backgrounds aim in the same direction, but can be hard to pull off due to how many places a character can hail from and their political views.
Pros
* The stories could easier have a focus on the characters themselves since each would have their individual story
* There could be many more varities in characters since no region would be off limits.
Cons
* Before the game can really get started, each character will have to be created so the plot and story can be build around them. This would extend the time it would take to make the game ready.
* There is no one besides the GM for the player to interact with
Band of Heroes
This idea is where it is more a classical rpg setting. A theme/place will be selected and each player will have their own character which is part of a group or is guided toward the group, which in turn will discover something together, following a story arc toward greatness.
Pros
* A group will allow for interaction with each other
* A wider variety of skills and abilities could be covered
Cons
* Classical settings can feel railroaded from time to time, especially on a forum
* It narrows down the types of characters that can be played greatly
Summoner's Rift
This idea is very much like the old "Danger Room" thread back in the old days of the forum, were any player could ask to play a character (their own creation or a already existing one) and play it against an opponent of their choosing (or opponents).
I am thinking this could work fine as a sub-board no matter which of the choices are made as the main setting.
Pros
* Good ol' Brawling
* Great way to test my 2.0 rules
Cons
* Not sure if there really is a con since its just a simple "game mode" everyone can participate in
