The movie written and directed by Josh Boone comfirmed that McAvoy won't be in the movie and has its first two members cast: Maise Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane and Anna Taylor Joy (The VVitch) as Magik. As long as Bryan Singer keeps his paws away from the movie, there is still hope.

I'm not familiar with Anna Taylor Joy, but she looks the part. Maise Williams should make a fantastic Wolfsbane, though! I'm down with that. I wonder if she'll be reunited on the big screen with Sophie Turner?
I heard McAvoy would be in the movie, though. Did that change recently?

She's fantastic on The Witch/The VVitch, a really good horror movie. She's cool on Morgan as well, but that movie was quite terrible. Haven't seen her in Split yet, but she certainly looks like she could be a mean Magik.
The rumor is that he won't be on the movie, something that sets it apart but it could be also worrying as well.

Interesting. I looked up some interviews with various production staff, and their comments are all pretty vague about McAvoy, so who knows! I'm okay with it either way.
What I'm really curious about is the timeline. Any idea or guesses as to which decade will host this storyline? Given the success of Logan, I wonder if there's any chance they've considered trying to connect those films. Donald Pierce is such a classic New Mutants villain, and I'm sure the studio is looking for any opportunity to bring X-23 into the mainstream timeline. I don't really see how it could work, but they have flown pretty fast and loose with these X-Men movies so far. Again, who knows!

And all of a sudden, New Mutants turns out to be a horror movie:

Like, I did anticipate that this movie might be on the scary side, due to a combination of them using the Demon Bear as their villain, and the smash success of Deadpool as an R-rated movie, but that's a full-on horror flick with no intention of being anything else. That surprises me. I'm not big on horror flicks, as I find that most of the scare comes from the same cheap tricks (jump scares, idiot ball plots, etc), and I'm not sure the inclusion of mutants is going to sweeten the deal for me. It's only one trailer, though, so I guess I'm going to wait and see. But I like these characters and was jazzed to hear they got their own movie, so I find this really disappointing.

Was hoping the whole 'horror' thing was just a Friday the 13th bit they were going for, but it looks to be a full on horror. I wonder what made them go with that route..

Well, I'm sure the studios are terrified of super hero genre fatigue. At some point audiences are going to start getting bored of the same formula over and over (though I don't think we're quite there yet, and I think we will see it coming) and so far the trend of crossing super heroes with other genres or gimmicks (The Wolverine/noir, Ant-Man/heist, Winter Soldier/spy thriller, Deadpool/R-rated comedy, Logan/western, and you could make an argument for Spiderman/coming-of-age) have been successful. Makes sense that they'd ask themselves "Well, what other genres are there?"
Off the top of my head, this leaves romance/rom-com, mockumentary, slice of life, historical/period, and horror. (I'm going to leave out action, sci-fi, and fantasy, as the super hero genre is sort of a combination of all three already, though maybe they could double down on sci-fi or fantasy.) Aside from horror and maybe a rom-com, those are pretty slim pickings.
Honestly, though, I still wasn't expecting horror. I would have put money on slice-of-life. The last X-film showed a glimpse of students living at the X-Mansion, and it just seemed natural to me that they would insert the New Mutants and do a movie about that. I'm not saying it's a good idea (I mean I'd watch it..) but it's what I expected them to do.
Really surprised they haven't done a small, cheesy rom-com yet. Seems like easy money on a small budget.

I'll agree that photobucket DID get stupid, but I can see his photo. Not sure why you can't, but I can.
Still though, Gris, good one. I'll look forward to it this summer.
