Well, it was nice while it lasted.
Reports indicate that negotiations between Sony and Disney over the future of their partnership have broken down over over - you guessed it - money.
The bottom line is that Sony is taking Spidey back to make films in their own universe. They might only have Tom Hardy's Venom for Spidey to play with so far, but they are working on adding Kraven the Hunter, Morbius, Black Cat, and Silver Sable to the mix. I guess after the financial (if not critical) success of Venom, and the hit they had in Into The Spiderverse, Sony feels like they can profit from Spidey again even without Marvel.
For Disney, this means we've seen and probably heard the last of the Tom Holland and Peter Parker. I don't know how they're going to sweep all that under the rug, but that's business. It's possible they could bring him back for some cameos or something, or buy the rights to at least mention him, but he won't be getting his own movies or making any Avengers-style appearances for years to come, if ever again.
Really sucks, and it's pretty shitty on both Disney and Sony's part, but I guess that's life. I think it's especially bad for the MCU, which is already facing a tepid reception to their announced upcoming films for the next 2+years. Holland's Spider-Man was a supposed to be their new flagship character. I guess it's Thor now?
It's going to be plenty awkward seeing Holland appear in his own movies in a world where they can't reference the Avengers or Tony Stark, or even Happy Hogan. They could still have Aunt May and the rest of their supporting cast, as technically those are Spidey characters, and they could have the same director, but yeesh. I don't think I'll be tuning in. Sony is fucking garbage.
Press F to pay respects.
