Just a general interest check for something horror related, possibly Lovecraftian or Vampire the Masquerade/World of Magicish?

Maybe on the Lovecraft (I guess that I've played too much CoC on tabletop that I can be kinda burned up on that, but would depend on the specific idea), more than probably yes on VtM or VtR (I like both) and I don't think I'd go for Mage but once again depends on the idea.

I have zero experience running any of those, but interested to play any.

I’m not sure I would do any of the world of darkness systems - am leaning towards Marvel heroic as a system if this goes anywhere. But definitely been on a kick of dark magic, Eldritch horrors, and biblical prophecies in fiction recently and wanted to hit somewhere close to those tropes

So enough folks have expressed at least general interest that I updated to add a poll at the top of the thread seeing if folks had a particular system/general setting in mind. While the settings are listed in no particular order, the systems are listed roughly in order of things I think might work for something like this that I am also familiar with (so, two criteria: will it work, and do I know it).
Please respond if you're still interested. Normally I would post a proof of concept but I'm not sure what folks had in mind, so this will help me get a sense, I hope.

Just putting that out there, while I have other priorities at the moment and I have yet to fully think it through, a World of Darkness-inspired setting would be one I might like to GM sometime in the future if interest is big enough at the time, and while horror will be one of the themes, it won't be the only focus. So if you guys go for something ala Lovecraftian Horror, there might be a second chance later down the line for something WoD-like. Of course, if that is what mcr chooses to go for, then nevermind this comment, lol.

Any system works for me, given that it's play by post the simpler probably the better, but I've seen both D20 and Cortex work in here so it shouldn't be an issue. Voted for the turn of the century setting, be it Victorian or Edwardian, in Europe or the States, it should work wonders.

So the votes on the settings are pretty disparate - nothing's gotten more than one vote. But no one's really weighed in on an appropriate system - which makes sense, if there's no particular setting, it's hard to tell what kind of system would work best for it.
For whatever it's worth, I'm leaning towards something nebulously modern - maybe a late 80's to mid 90's, with throwbacks to some of these other settings as deliberate anachronisms.
With that in mind, I'm still leaning towards something like Cortex, or perhaps Fate core, something where we can capture more abstract character concepts or attributes that may be harder to pin down in more mathematically rigid systems like D20 or MURPG. But again, let me know your thoughts. I'm still not 100% sure if this will go anywhere, but worth exploring anyways.

Do folks have a particular alternative preference?

The systems I know are d20, White Wolfs whatever it is, and MCU, I also know various specific systems like a couple pokemon ones and the like, I will be happy to learn a new system though.
