I know that people have talked about this game it's fustrating tendency to have a player invest all of thier attack stones in a fight if thier AO is higher than thier opponets.
Is there ways of making that a bad idea? Is that a bad thing?
You know the brawl tatic is popular in rl too. Hit a lot, hit hard, hit fast, hit first. Most real life-and-death fights involve first a brawl, then a grapple, and some nasty counter attacks before someone goes in for the closer. I have never seen an extened fight in real life go any other way. Even chickens and dogs do it the same.
You say you want something to make counters attractive? Take counters as a specialty. The jack who places 12 stones in attack will get a knife in his gut while he's going all out by a crafty cautious fighter who put only a mere 1+2 GP stones into assualt and 11 in defense. And no one said that your actions are happening first. They just are announced last. At the end of that round that guy that brawl definitely hurt the other guy, but now two equals are spent tottally spent and the cautious boxer has 3 white stones and the wild brawler has 2 white stones.
If someone is stupid enough to place all nine or more of thier stones on the opening assualt without examining thier environment or gauging thier opponet, then they deserve what they get.
If that fight continues it is going to be ugly, really ugly as they get into the lower energy levels. Those stones in counter attack are going to make a difference because of the crafty boxer splitting his stone pool gives him a GP bonus.
Pound for pound, blow for blow the defensive fighter will be last woman standing. Considering how this game works it will be a game of chicken as either player decides who is going to opt for unconscious first so as to save the characters life.
And if a character has a specialty in wrestling or grappling of any kind all those precious oblivious stones you spent in offense on first attack first round are gone. Sucked up into the aether because your limbs are caught up, now the enemy will break your tired bones like twigs, one white stone at a time.
Is your character strong? use big stuff to hit them with first at lower energies outside the 6 foot marker where traditional close combat begins.
Remeber it takes only one red stone over to remove one white stone, use speed to dance in and out of thier range while using some of the energy you have left for light attacks.
Got toughness? use the rope-a dope technique and allow you opponet to tire himself out and use take advantage of your higher durability to crush them later.
You character has extrasensory powers? use your heightened awareness to find terrain advantages and control the fight by luring them into a tactical disadvantage.
If you are in close combat with a battle monster (daredevil, cap, electra, ben grimm) then get out of those five feet by any means nesscary. Run, hide if you have too and then ambush them when they come looking.
She sniping you off? take cover, use stealth, and take her down before she sees you coming.
Wikipedia has a really good article on tactics employed in a boxing match that you can use as inspiration for your own attacks:
