Hey gang,
I'm saying "Hey gang" a lot these days.. opening too many threads..
ANYWAY! I'd like to tackle Tendril Whip, quickly if we can. The way I see it, four things are wrong with it, and they're all easily fixed:
1. Tendril Whip gives +1 damage. This is supposedly because it is more accurate, but I'm sorry, I don't understand why Toad's tongue is more dangerous than, say, a friggin' force blast. Accurate and quick, sure, but deadly? Whaa?
Solution: I'd like to change this to +1 stone vs Difficulty and Resistance of a task such as retrieving an item, hitting a button, tripping someone, whatever. This allows the character to perform some basic tasks without spending any energy (Anole likes to catch frisbees with his tongue!)
2. Tendril Whip can be used for movement... but that's all the description says. Pretty friggin' vague.
Solution: I have a suggestion about standardizing how movement actions (such as Unstoppable, Tendril Whip, possibly Acrobatics and the like) work. Essentially you can shift stones into movement, using your Speed as a max. Not revolutionary, but having it in words would be great. In addition, I suggest a -1 CL discount to Web Slinging.
3. This is the big one. Tendril Whip 1.0 can be used after stones are revealed, effectively making it prescient. That's neat and all, but the mechanic is brutally annoying (especially online) and it seems we might be getting rid of it entirely in 2.0.
Solution: Instead of being prescient, Tendril Whips are simply hella fast. Your Tendril Whip action takes place at a higher Initiative order than the rest of your actions. Add your Tendril Whip AN to your regular Initiative (as determined by your Agility, or possibly Speed) to determine when the action takes place.
Example: Toad as a Tongue Whip AN 3 and an Agility of 4. During a massive battle between the Brotherhood and the X-Men, Toad notices Beast slinking away from the fight holding a shiny piece of technology in his hands - the power converter that Mystique wanted them to steal in the first place!
Toad seizes the opportunity to literally snatch defeat from the hands of the enemy by placing 3 stones into Tongue Whip, plus he gets 1 free stone of effect from the General Pool. He puts all 4 stones towards snatching the high tech gizmo away from Beast, and puts 2 stones into Acrobatics to make his escape.
Though he normally acts after the more agile Beast, Toad gets to add his Tongue Whip AN of 3 to his initiative. As a result, his Tongue Whip action occurs before Beast's panel: he successfully snatches the power converter away and by the time Beast realizes what's happened, Toad is already leaping away to safety. Mystique will be pleased!
