Flavor - Toughness Str -- Block physical attacks, not projectiles (unless large) or energy attacks. Dur -- Endure both physical and energy attacks.
Flavor - Reflexive Dodge Agi -- Avoid attacks both cc and ranged. Not mental/ not magical unless in the form of "bolts". Spd -- Outdistance attacks or moving so fast that targeted attacks become invalid.
Flavor - Mental Fortitude Int -- Disbelieve mental attacks, illusion attacks. Will -- Resist magical attacks, emotional attacks.
Basically, to get the "Flavor Modifier" you add the two Abilities up and divide them by 2...

I like it. Simple, creative, and covers all bases.

Is there any way to buy a higher Toughness or Ref. Dodge? Or get a discount if you don't want it?
There must be some characters out there who are super Tough but aren't necessarily strong or that durable. (Names aren't coming to mind though, to be honest, but shouldn't we allow for it?)
EDIT: Woah.. also, what does Will do?

Will is like DnD Charisma....
Oh, and I'm sure there's a way to get more Toughness or Reflexive dodge... I just don't know if it was covered.

I think he just stuck it in there to give Mental Defense a second stat to draw from... But, I'm sure somethings could get a Will bonus... Social Skills, Statecraft, Leadership, BlackOps... etc.

So, to get Toughness 4, you would need forexample Strength 2 and Durability 2?

No... It's the AVERAGE of the two... so with Str2 Dur2 you would have Toughness 2....

Hmm. Leadership with a free ability bonus would be broken beyond repair. Social Skills could survive, because frankly we don't have even a rough scale for what, say, 3 stones can accomplish (as a guideline I compare stones to the subject's Int or their own Social Skills, whichever is higher).
I think I'd be happier without Will (D&D actually suffers greatly for attempting to draw a distinction between Charisma, Intelligence and Wisdom; there are some very grey areas). Mental Defense seemed to be fine the way it was before: Int + Telepathy AN + Modifier.

No... It's the AVERAGE of the two... so with Str2 Dur2 you would have Toughness 2.... Hmm, I just realized that this gives normal humans Toughness. In fact it gives everyone toughness. That's.. maybe not a good thing. ~TWF

My main concern is what TwF said about characters who might be tough but dosent have allot of Strength or Durability (could be a mutant child)..

It'll all work out in the long run... remember all this is just barebones...
As for being without Will... I think you're the only person so far to have anything against the Defense Matrix... It was actually hailed as a rousing one shot success...
Maybe it can be an additive to Leadership/Statecraft... like Telepathy... +2 CL

And it wouldn't be broken... you could just command more troops... big whoop.

Well, I'm being critical of it because that's sort of the point of all this. I'm trying to poke holes in it; if it stands up to the test, then I'm happy.
But I also question the reason behind it. I always have to ask: What is this attempting to fix? What was wrong with the old system of buying Reflexive Dodge and Toughness?

TWF got a point- that gives an avarage human both Toughness and Reflexive dodge at 1 (total of 2 defense static)- thats not right, unless there is a 0 stat for those who are UNDER avarage (like Aunt May would have 0 in most physical stats, for example).
Actually, Ability 0 could help make a distinction between Avarage and Below Avarage people.
