Who should we put in the book as established playable characters? Should we use all of the characters listed in the previous versions or should we come up with a list of our own?
I know this is radical thinking by MURPG standards… but I say we should take a page out of the Wizard’s book.
I think we should list the most common and most popular Marvel characters in the “Core MURPGv 2.0” book and then come up with a separate collaboration with as much characters as we can think of for a separate “Characters in MURPGv 2.0” book. Kind of like a Monster Manuel but for MURPG.

I think you've got something there Chuck... Personally if we allow 20 Characters into the Core Book (One hero and one villain for each type of build
BUILDS [Tank, Speedster, Master, Close Combatant, Ranged Combatant, Blaster, Acrobat, Inventor, Magic User, Shapechanger]
Opinions?

I think we should do it like the original books, start with the most popular characters, making sure to get a mix of heroes and villains and different build types dio brought up, and then later if people make expansions, do it based around on a specific nitch/team/family in the marvel universe.

Well, yeah, but we should have diverse builds in there as well, Personally I think 2 of each would be just fine, and would grab all the popular characters.

Maybe 30 characters. One of each build and some more that are the most/influential popular. Sure-fire ins: Spider-Man Iron Man Wolvrine Hulk F.F. Magneto Xavier

dont forget cap
also, since we don't work for, have any afiliation with, or any obligations to marvel specifically, would we be opposed to making dc chars in the core book?

I would be.... there is such a power gap between the two universes, that there really isn't a way to accurately create them.

I don't know that I agree on the overall power gap. Sure, there are a few guys in DC who are obserdly , even annoyingly powerful (I'm looking at you JLA...minus Batman <3...oh and aquaman too) but it isn't like marvel doesn't have it's fair share of powerful characters. Besides who hasn't spent days dreaming of the battle between Mogo and Galactus?

Trust me... Batman would take out most of the Avengers.... And Aquaman DID defeat Namor in a non VS crossover. Talking to fish is MUCH more useful than you'd think.....
Other than that, we're talking about Iconic characters being included here, and removing the Justice League takes out MOST of those for DC... so let's stick to Marvel shall we?

As Dio points out... the power gap between DC and Marvel is so ridiculous now that you couldn't include them in the same book.
I mean, Marvel's "power houses" are in line with some of DC's standard heroes. The new Blue Beetle could absolutely thrash Thanos, and Batman could have his way with the majority of Marvel's "powered" characters twice a day with a matinee on Sundays.

Let's stick with Marvel for now. I'm sure the rules we make will make it easy to build DC.
Now that I have slep on the topic. I think we might want to have all of the most popular Marvel titles and stick 1-4 people from each title until we get to 30 people.
I like 30 for some reason it seems like a good solid number... maybe 40... but no more than that. How many were represented in the original core?

I don't know, but IMO the following characters are absolute requisites
The original Avengers lineup Captain America (original) Spider-Man The Fantastic Four (original lineup) The original X-Men Storm Wolverine
Thats 19 "good guys" alone. We could easily round that to 20 by adding another iconic "solo" hero (Daredevil or Punisher).

Let's add Punisher... I asked for a pure Ranged Combatant.... so it's either him or Hawkeye...

Thats fine by me, but both Johnny Storm and uh... Storm are really pure ranged combatants Personally, because this isn't a class-based system and many characters will cross the borders of specific "build" types, I don't place a lot of value in trying to put out "example builds" for specific archetypes. My choices are based simply on the fact that those characters are Marvel Icons who have stood the test of time, and even if some of them are "out of play" right now, all of them should have broad appeal to the target audience. Additionally it sets a good "baseline"... which is one thing I believe they did right (even if unintentionally) in MURPG 1.
