Grounder (real name: Marie MacDougal) had a privileged upbringing and attended Ursuline Academy preparatory school. She was an athletic, boisterous child, a puzzle to her reserved and conservative parents. She never revealed to them the cause of a housefire that broke out not long after her 11th birthday, the result of her powers manifesting in the family garage. She hid her abilities, and devoted herself to schoolwork, to the delight of her parents. After school, she reserved a liberal arts degree, and continued to be single. Another secret she hid from her parents was her homosexuality. Still unmarried, she went into business dealing in antique furniture. As her life became more settled, she practiced her powers in secret. One night, a supervillain went on a rampage, the result of a botched robbery. Marie donned a ski mask and a raincoat and rushed to the scene. She delayed him long enough for the authorities to arrive, but suffered a severe injury. Her mutant metabolism saved her, but she had no hope of a secret identity. Instead, after recovering, she hired a publicist and had an armored costume tailored, and became a vocational superhero.
Marie is a bold, courageous woman with a good sense of humor. However, she sometimes bites off more than she can chew, always testing her personal limits and tempting fate. She also has a weakness for the sport of seduction, and has a string of potentially explosive affairs behind her. She broke off her romantic relationship with, but remains close to, her secretary, Jane Cliff, a married woman. She has a fear of heights.
She has the power to absorb electricity into her body like a super battery, and discharge it with violent force, or manipulate it mentally. She can also sense electrical currents. However, strong magnetic fields can cause her powers to behave erratically and dangerously.
