This is my roleplay sample for Sir Lamorak, a character I submitted to Gig's 'The Knights of the Round' game (and was rejected). I've tried to tell a complete story within 30 lines, using the "masquerade ball" idea as a starting point.
And here it is:
There was wine and music and Sir Lamorak had a woman in his arms. 'Perhaps we should go upstairs,' she breathed into his ear. Her tone was soft and seductive.
'Don't you want to dance?' he said, with a hearty laugh. It might have been the wine, but... he didn't remember that there had been any dancing.
'Oh, I know what you want,' she said, even as he dragged her out onto the dance floor.
'Madame, I want the pleasure of this dance,' he said gallantly. He wasn't the best of knights, but he liked to do things properly. He didn't even know this lady's name. It wouldn't be right...
There was a noise like the hissing of many serpents. Lamorak glanced around, trying to find the source of the noise. He saw his half-brother, Sir Percival, sitting at a side table, talking to a damsel who had once been extremely rich before she was dispossessed by a jealous... wait... wait... wait... how did he, Lamorak, know that? When had he overheard? What had happened earlier this night? The last thing he remembered... the last thing he remembered was flying to investigate a wrecked skyship. Percival had been there with him. After that, nothing.
Oh... his head ached so badly...
'You should rest, Sir Lamorak,' said his dance partner. 'Sleep.'
'None of this is real,' he realised. It seemed so clear to him now. 'We never left that wrecked ship. This is an illusion.'
There was a hiss. His dance partner screamed and lashed out at him with fingernails that were lengthening into claws. She was melting into something horrible. Where once there had been a fair maiden there was now a huge, warty toad.
He heard Sir Percival cry out, 'My lord God, let me not be shamed!'
A wind blew across the room. The other dancers, members of the orchestra and everyone else at the masquerade ball (except for Lamorak and Percival) were revealed as demonic creatures with dark, sinewy bodies, black wings and malevolent elfin faces. They took to the air, shrieking horribly, fleeing from the mysterious wind. All around, the gold and marble ballroom seemed to crumble into nothingness, revealing splintered timbers and twisted machinery. They were in the belly of the wrecked ship, just as Lamorak had suspected.
The huge toad couldn't escape quickly enough. The wind picked it up and threw it high in the air. Lamorak climbed up to the hole in the side of the ship and peered out to watch it fall. He watched as the toad was swallowed up by the sea. He shivered.
'We were lucky there, Percy,' he said in a strained voice. 'Yeesh.'
'Thank God for saving us,' said Percival. 'That was clearly divine intervention.'
Lamorak admitted that it was so. He got down on his knees and murmured a few quick prayers of thanks. 'Writing the mission report is going to be fun,' he said. 'Arthur's not going to believe a word of this.'

Name: Jack Hyatt Age: 17 Height: 5’10” Weight: 164lbs. Eye Colour: Blue Hair Colour: Dark Brown (streaked with grey) Species: Mutant
Abilities: Intelligence: 4 Strength: 1 Agility: 5 Speed: 2 Health: 3 Energy Reserve: 4 (12) Energy Regeneration: 4 (Cost: 11w)
Actions: Cause Pain (as Telepathy): 5 - Intelligence Bonus - Can’t read minds - Mental Bolts (6w)
Close Combat: 2 (Agility Bonus or Weapon Modifier) - Brawling - Knives
Social Skills: 2 - Gang Culture - Lowlife
Thieving: 3 (Agility Bonus) - Car theft - Pickpocket - Stealth
Vehicle Operation: 2 - Cars - Motorbikes
Total: 20w (-10w of challenges) 5 white stones saved for later.
Modifiers: Mutant, human appearance Mental Defense: 5 (from Telepathy)
Challenges: Mutant (-3w)
Embittered (-1w) - Jack Hyatt is an extremely bitter and contemptuous young man.
Leaking Emotions (-1w) - He has to keep very calm. Otherwise, he tends to radiate negative emotions such as fear, pain, misery and malice. He has no control over this side-effect of his mutant powers.
Guilty Conscience (-1w) - Jack’s mutant power is the ability to cause other living beings to suffer excruciating pain. He thinks that this power is evil and he regrets using it (even on people who probably deserved it).
Haunted Past (-2w) - See background for details.
Power is Harmful (-2w) - Jack’s mutant power is actually physically damaging, resulting in severe nose-bleeds, nausea, and other impairments. Investing the maximum stones into a mutant action will cause the character to lose 1w Health as a result of self-inflicted stress damage.
Background: Jack Hyatt was probably doomed from the start. He was born into a family of thuggish gangsters: his father, Iain, fancies himself as a crime lord, the glorious ruler of a few housing estates, leader of a gang of drug dealers and bully boys; his elder brother, Dennis, the heir apparent, is a vicious idiot with a knife fetish; his mother, Cecilia, was his father’s mistress who made the mistake of having an affair with one of the gang lieutenants, tried to run off with a large sum of money and then... um, disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Jack grew up in this harsh environment, always having to prove that he was stronger, tougher and meaner than everybody else, and usually failing to meet his father’s expectations: he was always too quiet, too scrawny, too thoughtful and too softhearted. Iain Hyatt grew obsessed with the possibility that Jack was not actually his son, but he never voiced this fear. Instead, his moods became weirdly unpredictable; sometimes he’d subject Jack to all kinds of physical and mental abuse and at other times he could be creepily affectionate. Jack learned to stay out of his way whenever that was possible.
(Note: The reason Iain Hyatt did not just take a paternity test was that he was frightened of what might be revealed, frightened for his own virility. After all, Dennis doesn’t look very much like him, either...)
And then it became obvious that Jack was a mutant. He started leaking thoughts and painful emotions all over the place. His hair turned grey almost overnight. Iain Hyatt hated mutants and, as far as he was concerned, this was final proof that Jack was not his son. He tried to beat Jack to death with his bare hands. Jack instinctively defended himself by emitting a vicious bolt of pain that rendered his father unconscious. He used this power to disable anyone else who tried to stop him as he made his escape. He stole a car and drove off into the night, not knowing where he was going or what he would do when he got there...

Background: "I believe that everything I suffered was worth it in the end. I have to."
Born on Cyrus Vulpa (an Agri-world in the Golgenna Reach), Amartey Leibowitz joined the PDF as soon as she was old enough. When a new Guard regiment was founded, Amartey was one of those selected to join its ranks. The regiment was then sent to join the Margin Crusade, stirred up with thoughts of heroism and conquest. However, the Crusade turned out to be a hopeless, bloody and confused mess. The lives of millions of loyal Imperial soldiers had been fed into the meatgrinder, but nothing of real value had been achieved. The Cyrus Vulpan 9th Regiment spent more than a decade fighting brutal Xenos across a series of inhospitable worlds. Starvation and disease killed more of them than the aliens ever did.
Eventually, the Cyrus Vulpan 9th were recalled from active duty. On the one hand, Amartey felt a sense of relief. Her effectiveness as soldier had been severely impaired by recurring health problems, including large and painful warts on her feet that kept growing back every time she had them removed. However, on the other hand, she was appalled by a nagging suspicion that her regiment's glorious victories and sacrifices meant nothing at all. The Margin Crusade was just as much of a mess as it had ever been.
She was part of the garrison on Cyrus Vulpa when a notorious recidivist fled through the nearby area pursued by the forces of the inquisition. The Inquisitor requested help from the Imperial Guard garrison and Amartey was a member of the squad that went to his/her aid. In the ensuing firefight with the recidivist and his brainwashed dupes, Amartey was one of the few survivors. The Inquisitor had taken notice of her faith and dedication and was favourably impressed. He/she asked Amartey to join his/her cadre of acolytes.
Amartey wants her life (and death) to mean something. She would gladly sacrifice her own life if it meant a decisive victory over the forces of Chaos and misrule. Her nightmare is that she will once again get bogged down in a hopeless, meaningless war where her efforts won't make any difference. She has great faith in the God-Emperor and doesn't want to fail Him again. Death would be preferable to that.

Background: Lyria Churchward was an orphan girl adopted into a pious monastic community on Dorlas, one of the moons of Threnody. From an early age, she worked as a servant to the monks of an obscure branch of the Imperial Cult. She was brought up to believe that the God-Emperor was the source of everything that was good in the universe. As well as being devoutly faithful, she should be kind, hardworking and demure; she should know her place, just like all the other women at the monastery. She was told that she must do as she was told.
She went to the schola with the rest of the children of the cult. She proved herself a bright and attentive student. But living in the monastery was an education of a different kind, one that left her feeling cynical and dissatisfied. She saw how the abbot and other high-ranking monks lived in unrestrained luxury while preaching modesty and ascetism. She saw them preaching the virtues of chastity while groping the serving girls or eyeing up the altar boys. She saw how greedy they were for gold, jewels, fine clothes and rich foods. All too often, it seemed like the Imperial Faith was nothing more than a con trick to make money for the priests.
So she used cunning and trickery to impress the superstitious people of the monastic community with how pious, virtuous and insightful she could be, until some of them were calling her a "miracle-child" and expecting her to grow up to be a saint. Partly, she did this out of an idealistic belief that is she became a priestess she would be able to clean up corruption within the monastery and teach people a better way, but partly she did this out of a cynical desire to secure a better life for herself. The other monks never seemed to like her very much; they were always suspicious of her. As soon as he could, the abbot sent her away to serve as a warden at the Inquisitorial Asylum on Threnody.
For a number of years, she tended to the spiritual needs of inmates at the Asylum. Also, she helped feed them, dress them and gave out the medicines that were prescribed for them. She tried to soothe them when they were agitated and she helped to restrain them when they became aggressive. She listened when there was something they wanted to tell her, she talked to them and sang hymns for them. Even though her faith in the God-Emperor was a weak and wavering little thing, she prayed for them. It was during this time that she first met Inquisitor Davidus Havelock. Several times he came to visit a former acolyte who had been his friend for many years before the horrors she experienced took too great a toll on her mind: her name was Pradni Gartnait.
Lyria always had difficulties in maintaining a professional distance from the men and women in her care. Too often, she cherished them like they were the family she never had. She was devastated when anything bad happened to them: when they were sick or injured, or when they died. It was a sort of emotional torment for her. Eventually, she decided she could stand it no longer and asked to be transferred, to serve the Inquisition in some other capacity. When he found out that she wanted a new career, Inquisitor Havelock asked her to join one of his acolyte cells. She must have impressed him somehow when they had met before. Grateful for this opportunity, she swore she would carry out her new responsibilities as best she could.
Appearance and Personality: Lyria Churchward is still a fairly young woman, with tanned skin, black hair and a pleasant face. She is quiet, reserved and somewhat careworn. She tends to wear ecclesiastical robes of decent quality but with little ornamentation. She knows to put on a show of religious devotion when anyone is watching, but her attitude towards the God-Emperor and the Imperial Faith is actually somewhat skeptical. Still, she believes that doing good, helping people and protecting humanity from the threat of Chaos is a worthwhile cause whether or not the Emperor really is a god, so she throws herself wholeheartedly into her work. She knows that the consequences would be unpleasant for her if anyone found out about her lack of faith, so she knows better than to be completely honest with anyone.

In the Star Wars Expanded Universe, Trandoshans tend to be defined entirely by their one and only appearance in the movies (similar to how all Bothans are spies, all Gamorreans are thugs, all Hutts are crime lords and all Bith are musicians).
Reading about Trandoshans on Wookieepedia, it seems like all Trandoshans are bounty hunters. Hunting is apparently the basis of their entire society, where Trandoshans must hunt dangerous prey in order to appease their goddess, the "Scorekeeper". Now, obviously not all Trandoshans can be mercenaries, bounty hunters or slavers because such a society could not possibly sustain itself. There must be Trandoshan farmers, herders, administrators, builders, roofers, repairmen, painters, mechanics, engineers, salesmen, plumbers, miners, labourers, couriers, pilots, deliverymen, cooks, waiters, hoteliers and so on. It's just that bounty hunters and slavers are the only ones we ever get to hear about.
So, this is my character's backstory:
The collapse of the Galactic Empire caused Trandoshan society. For a long time, Trandoshans had been dominated by hunters: all Trandoshans were encouraged to aspire to be hunters; it was believed that only great hunters would find favour with the goddess and be rewarded in the afterlife. The old hunting-and-slaving families were extremely wealthy and powerful, ruling over Dosha (the Trandoshan home planet) and all other Trandoshans, although they were themselves dominated by the Galactic Empire.
The Galactic Empire had encouraged Trandoshans to hunt and kill Wookiees for their pelts. Many Trandoshans were eager to prove themselves in this way. However, this was opposed by some who warned that the Galactic Empire was using the enmity between Trandoshans and Wookiees to distract from the fact that both species were being oppressed by the Galactic Empire.
When the New Republic came to power, Trandoshans very quickly realised that the old ways could not continue. Trandoshans would no longer be allowed to hunt other sapient creatures. Also, the Republic was trying to shut down the slaving and mercenary activities that were one of the main sources of the old families' wealth.
Most Trandoshans could not see why the old families still had so much power. Other elements within Trandoshan society were demanding to be part of the government of Dosha. Trandoshan religion encouraged them to despise merchants, but there were a lot of merchants on Dosha – the merchant 'class' encompassed a very wide range of people and professions – and many of the merchants were wealthy and well-educated. The 'merchants' formed a new political movement, the Party for Progress, campaigning for democratic rule, religious freedom (which for many Trandoshans meant 'freedom from religion'), closer economic ties with the New Republic, equal rights for all Trandoshans and non-Trandoshans, and an end to 'indentured servitude' (slavery by another name in an attempt to avoid New Republic sanctions, basically).
The old ruling classes, the hunters, saw the Party for Progress as a group of dangerous malcontents that would destroy thousand year old traditions, destroy everything that was unique and good about Trandoshan society and remake Trandoshans until they were exactly the same as Humans or Rodians or any of the other species that made up the New Republic.
The struggle between the old ruling classes and the new bourgeoisie ended in the short but exceedingly savage Trandoshan Civil War.
Laniss Pesht was a mechanic working on the outskirts of one of Dosha's smaller cities. She spent her working life repairing droids, speeders and farming equipment. She was well-known for her manual dexterity, which was exceptional by Trandoshan standards (an early sign of her Force sensitivity). She was an outspoken member of the Party for Progress. For this reason, she was attacked by a group of thugs hired by a local nobleman/hunter who wanted to make an example of her.
She was rescued by Luke Skywalker. He had been sent with an army of Republic troops to restore order. In gratitude, she swore a life debt to him.
It was extremely unlikely that Skywalker would be in the right place at the right time to save her – except that the Force moves in mysterious ways. Skywalker realised that Laniss was Force sensitive. The fact that she had sworn a life debt meant that they were now bound together. He decided to train her as a Jedi.

Powerful Enemies/Haunted Past (4 stones) - Because of her previous association with the Party for Progress and her current position as one of Luke Skywalker's apprentices, Laniss is seen as a traitor to Trandoshan society. She has turned away from the Scorekeeper and pledged herself to the 'Jeedai' religion: she is an apostate! The surviving members of the old ruling classes see her as a symbol of everything they hate. On the other hand, more moderate and forward-thinking Trandoshans want to use her as a symbol of the good that Trandoshans can achieve. - Laniss doesn’t want to be anyone's political symbol. She is conscientious and focussed on learning the ways of the Jedi.
