A Nobel Prize winning scientist working for the Freedom Foundation his life is as exciting as it is exceptional. Graduating high school at the age of 15, he completed his dual masters (Mechanical Engineering and Biotechnology) by 19. If that wasn’t enough he went on to claim doctorates in the same by only 21! He had been courted by all of the world’s major Pharmaceutical Companies, NASA, NSA, CIA, he had even been offered positions with Goldman Sachs and of course the various military academies. He had shocked them all when he had left only weeks after graduation to serve with UNICEF. Though the pay was minimal, the accommodations unremarkable and the research facilities inadequate Ethan had a passion for helping people. He knew that a man only had a certain amount of time in his life to take risks and once that window was closed it was usually gone. So setting off with only a small duffel bag, he set out change the world… or at least a small part of it. Ethan was a shining star at UNICEF. He developed innovative irrigation systems, discovered indigenous mosquito repellants and helped streamline food and medical aid distribution systems. In a few short years he had made himself indispensible to the organization, but more than that he had endeared himself to the locals, especially the children. The only problem he had been unable to deal with was the constant civil wars and ethnic violence. UNICEF had a strict hands off policy when it came to local violence and prohibited its members from getting in the way of local warlords. They prevented the filming of violent acts, and any intervention of any kind. Reasoning that they could accomplish the most good if the local warlords didn’t stand in their way, and the only way to ensure that was to remain neutral. Ethan had been counseled several times for refusing to follow the policy. He had been in direct conflict, and even beaten violently by three armed guards for stopping a rape in progress. He never regretted stepping in, even when it caused him bodily harm, though it made his daily activities more difficult. As his boldness with local thugs increased, so did the reprisals. His food convoys began getting attacked more often, the windows of his building were continually smashed or broken… and eventually he began getting shot at and had only once narrowly avoided a grenade that would have taken his life. His boldness in standing up for the indigenous people earned him their love and respect. He was famous in the local communities and could remember the faces of those whose lives he had directly saved… and the women who’s dignity he had rescued. In his mind he couldn’t have accomplished anything greater than that… even if it cost him his life. But it was an aspect of his job that most of the developed world would never know, or likely care about. Instead it was for his groundbreaking water purification and reutilization system, the WPRS, that he won his Nobel prize. While the idea was innovative in its design, it was most remarkable for the simple and inexpensive production costs. For less than the cost of a rent payment, he was able to produce a water system that would last in excess of 25 years. Access to clean water was one of the world’s greatest needs, and he had worked diligently to fill it. While his accomplishment was noteworthy, what caught the eye of the Nobel committee was not the invention itself. While he had been offered millions of dollars for the patent, he had refused them. While he retained the original patent rights, he made them available for public use, meaning any aid organization, government or even private individual could build his design without paying any royalties. His charity and innovation resulted in being honored with a Nobel Prize. For several months he continued his work in Africa, using his new found wealth to expand his research into malaria prevention, and expand production of his filtration systems. But with his celebrity status (at least in the scientific community) he wouldn’t be able to hide out for long. He wasn’t surprised when he was approached by the Future Foundation. In fact, he had been expecting it. They had been long time funders of his research and had continually honored him with benefit dinners and fund raisers. They had shown that they believed in his ability and were willing to take risks, and put their considerable resources behind his vision. He respected the organization greatly and realized the potential the organization presented him. Though his heart was always with helping the masses, after a long talk with FF representatives he was convinced that he could accomplish that goal better elsewhere. The Freedom Foundation promised him access to the world’s best facilities, best funding and most diverse and capable minds. To sweeten the deal, they had promised a team that would be dedicated to continuing his work on the African continent. With so many perks, and no threat that his work would be lost, Ethanander signed on the dotted line and was on a plane within a month and a half. The Freedom Foundation was everything he had imagined it would be. He had toured the facilities before on multiple occasions, but always as a guest. Now that he was on the inside he had access to prototypes… research… notes… journals… more raw data than he would be able to process in three lifetimes was stored on only one of the buildings sixteen data clusters. To put it lightly, he was in heaven and it showed. He was happier than he had ever been in his life, he was accomplishing more than he had ever imagined possible. He was often the first one in to work, and the last one to leave… often overlapping shits with several security guards. He often forgot to eat, remembering only when his assistant brought in plates of his favorite foods which were the only things that could pull him away from his research. That and a certain someone (insert whatever romantic sub-plot we decide is going on) Though he embodied the ideals of a scientist, he didn't™t carry the social stigma associated with it. He was perfectly comfortable in social situations, he could tell jokes, remember punch lines and quote relevant pop culture references. It was only a scout, one of the smaller, lighter models meant for discovering and flushing out mutants. His muscles ached, and he couldn’t remember the last time he had slept… let alone the last time he had eaten. Truthfully he didn’t care. He would press forward. He would continue fighting until his suit needed repairs. What were his base needs compared to the lives of the mutants he might save? An hour later, after he had taken the two mutants he had saved to a safe house, Stanton stood on the roof of a dilapidated warehouse overlooking what was once a bustling and prosperous city center. His red rimmed eyes stung, begging for sleep. How had it come to this? How had human beings allowed themselves to come to this place? A world where only a few had anything remotely worthy of being called hope? How had prejudice, hate and pride become mankind’s governing emotions? Stanton understood those answers better than most. It hadn’t always been this way… Stanton had once been a Kennedy. A member of a family that had long been involved in shaping, and developing the future of this once great nation. A nation that was known throughout the world for its freedom, and tolerance. He had been indoctrinated on his parent’s knees about the impact he would have on the world… about his responsibility to his country. About what it meant to be a good citizen. Stanton had gone to the best schools. He had been groomed for greatness. In graduate school he had studied engineering and robotics. Though he planned on pursuing a career in politics, his family had decided to place him in a large defense contracting firm for a few years first. A place where he would build political capital and collect points he would later be able to cash in for votes and favors… It was there that he began working on the Peacekeeper Mark I robots. At least that is what they were called in the early phases. The robots were designed to operate independently on the battlefield, with AI that could for the first time independently pick out friends and enemies on the battlefield without human guidance. The Peacekeepers were going to revolutionize warfare and usher in a new period of peace and prosperity for the world… It wasn’t until a year later when the first prototypes rolled off of the line that Stanton realized his grave mistakes. As his father, by now the president of the United States gave a speech, he revealed the robots to the world; and with them their true purpose. That had been several years ago. A lot had happened since then, and Stanton hasn’t come close to atoning for his sins… let alone those of his father. The world was in chaos and Stanton, now known as Cypher spent almost every waking hour fighting to turn back the clock and restore the world to what it had once been. He stops only to repair his tools, and eat and sleep when necessary. Though he is not a mutant, he has used his considerable skills to create a suit of armor for himself. Not only does it grant him protection, and the ability fly. But it allows him to hack in to, and in some cases even control the same Sentinel robots that have terrorized the world for so long now. His newest addition is an EMP style weapon that has proven capable of completely shutting a Sentinel down, even if it is only temporarily. He was born under a bad sign, to a crack head mother, and any number of crack dealers, pimps and hustlers that could have been his father. If that didn’t blow his chances in life, his mother bled out, and died on the table within minutes of his birth. Curtis never should have made it past 15 years old. He never would have if it hadn’t been for his Nana Lucille. Lucille had worked hard to give Curtis a moral compass and a strong work ethic. But she struggled with age, and worked three jobs just to keep the water running, if not the lights on. Curtis grew up loving his Nana. She doted over him, and did everything she could to take care of him. She pushed him to do his schoolwork, and work hard… but the older he got the older she got. The long hours took their toll on her body, and her health deteriorated year after year. By the time he was 11 he rarely ever saw her. When she wasn’t at work, she was in bed resting. On his 12th birthday, as he blew the candle out on his small cupcake, his Nana had her first heart attack. Within days of her being sent home, the hospital bills began pouring in. As Lucile lay in her bed, day after day, debt began piling up. Eventually the lights turned off… and the water stopped flowing. At 12 years old, Curtis was faced with the choice. Let his grandmother starve to death in her bed, or get out on the street and hustle. The next three years were almost a blur. The street life came natural to Curtis. After robbing $20, he bought his first rocks and within two weeks had flipped them over and over until he had a stack of hundreds under his mattress. Within a month he was making more money than his Nana made in six. The old woman, completely bedridden, couldn’t of stopped him even if she wanted to. The fact was that she needed him now, as much as he had needed her 12 years prior. With success came respect on the street, and with respect came both followers, and rivals. Curtis was living large and was driving the streets in fast cars, with beautiful girls before he ever turned 14. By 16 he had a stable of grown men doing his dirty work for him. He had a reputation for cunning, resourcefulness, and strong, fair leadership. At this pace, he was set to run the city before he ever turned 25. Old men sitting on street corners, and young girls started calling him ‘The One’. All of his power, centered on two things: his natural leadership ability, and his obsession with tinkering his products and weapons. Curtis was fascinated, and constantly playing around with both the chemicals in his drugs, and the technology his foot soldiers used to defend them. It was more than just a hobby. His enhanced tech, and products were always just a little better than his rivals, so when he couldn’t beat them with force, he beat them in service. Eventually though, all good things must come to an end. And one night, everything came crashing down for Curtis. He was coming home late from a pickup. A pickup he never should have made himself. One of his lieutenants had gotten sick at the last minute and someone had to make the run for him. Not trusting anyone that was available, Curtis picked up the job himself. It turned out to be an almost fatal mistake. Stopping at a red light in a deserted part of the old industrial district, Curtis lurched forward as his car was rear-ended at a red light. He hadn’t even seen any headlights. It was a setup. Pissed and overconfident he stormed out of his car, never recognizing the setup for what it was. Curtis had never even grabbed his piece from the glove box. Before he even realized what was happening four men exited the vehicle that had hit him and opened fire. He tried to turn and run, but there was no escape. The sound of 9 mm bullets and shotgun shells popping off filled the street. When it was all over Curtis had been shot 9 times. Once in each leg, four times in the chest, once in the jaw and twice in his right shoulder. The shot to the jaw had been a point blank, coup de gras that was inches from ending his life once and for all. Curtis lay in his own blood, silently bleeding out and gasping for air for ten minutes before finally passing out. When he came to, he was in a hospital somewhere, surrounded by armed police officers. When the sedation wore off, he was read his rights and placed under arrest. His trunk had been full of kilos of cocaine, and more than half a dozen hot weapons were hidden in various compartments. He was F*cked. Curtis went through a few months of rehab, under armed guard, where he learned to walk, talk and use his right arm again. The rehab was far too short for his injury level… but as soon as he was fit for trial he was sentenced to 3 years in a high security juvenile detention facility. With Curtis off the street his kingdom quickly crumbled. His rivals took the chance to parcel out his territory. They murdered his Lieutenants… stole his customers, and eventually targeted the only thing he had left… his Nana. One night, just after she had gone to bed, almost a dozen men broke into her home. They beat her senseless, they gang raped her for hours, they stabbed her multiple times, and eventually they shot her 9 times. The same way they had shot Curtis. She bled out on her bedroom floor. …….
