So I read tonight that The Cortex+ System is being applied to the next endorsed Marvel RPG. Hickman is involved (DEBUNKED!). The prospectus is more Leverage-like than Smallville, and they're claiming 16 event suppliments (starting with the Civil War). Although it's been compared to Leverage, it's a stand alone and setting specific spin on the cortex+ core system. Supposedly, it will take all of five minutes to learn the mechanics. Each suppliment will have hand-full's of pregen cannon character sheets, but guidelines will be supplied for custom/unique's. I heard the first book will be out in January. Hey folks! I'm Cam Banks, Creative Director at Margaret Weis Productions and lead designer of the Marvel Heroes RPG product line. Tracy Hickman isn't involved in the game or our company (not sure where you got that information), but yes, this will be a Cortex Plus game. It will not be the same version of Cortex Plus we used in Smallville; we build these games from the ground up based on shared design concepts in order to make them as true to the license as we can. For another look at a Cortex Plus game, check out the Dragon Brigade Opening Salvo from DriveThruRPG: goo.gl/iq7Wv This is the system being used for swashbuckling fantasy, as opposed to relationship drama or modern caper and heist action. Cheers, Cam

I do like the Cortex system better than the MURPG system, but I hate how marvel handles roleplaying games. They made three books in the last system before deciding that they weren't selling well compared too comics...Well DUH that's not a monthly subscription. If marvel had have made small monthly issues then it would have sold like a comic. They should have made something similar to D&D magazine. In fact me and some of my friends at the local comic book show we frequented at the time wrote marvel about it only to hear nothing back.
They wanted a gaming franchise that rivaled D&D, but weren't willing to put forth the effort to do it. They kept complaining about City of Heroes, but weren't willing to work on their own MMO. Marvel had the majority market of comic book sales the last time I checked, but when they don't dominate a new endeavor they almost always give up to early, and don't put forth the effort to get their desired results. They spent years building a comic book empire that's worthy of awe, but because of their history with roleplaying games I'm not optimistic about the new books.
The Cortex is a good system, but I'm confused as too why they didn't choose Mutants and Masterminds. It has DC Adventures, and some people may claim that's the reason, but Cortex has Smallville, So DC having games on M&M isn't a likely excuse for them not to publish games there.
I've found more players interested in M&M because it's basically an offshoot of d20 which most players are familiar with compared to the players that are familiar with cortex.

They canceled MURPG because it wasn't selling well at all, compared to anything. They were literally losing money on everything they printed. It would have been foolish to continue sitting out supplements for a game nobody wanted.

Ah, now that would make more sense. When I searched Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game a while back I read that Marvel had quit because they were trying to compare their Roleplaying Sales to Comic Sales. It does make more sense that they would quit because their games weren't selling at all though.
I wonder if it would have been better as an online thing? You know, pdf files and so on. After all, we've thrived here without any fresh material from marvel gaming wise for years.
It would be interesting to see how it would have helped their Online Subscriptions if they had exclusive MURPG content with a subscription. I think comic fans, and gamers like us would be more likely for online subscriptions if they offered exclusive gaming content.

If you ask me, I think discontinuing MURPG worked the best for everyone. Marvel wasnt losing any more money, the system is now a cult classic, it lives its own life on this board and those few people that bought it and, most importantly, Marvel can move on to make a new RPG. Becouse lets face it, another Tabletop RPG from Marvel Universe was inevitable.
On a side-note, I never heard of Cortex+. Gotta do the research now.

Cortex is quite a good system- they used it for Serenity. But from what I've seen of the Smallville one, it doesn't work for powers based games all that well. Its a scaled d systemwhere stats and skills are rated from d2-d12+x.

Smallville works just fine, it's just that Smallville is designed to emulate a TV series very specifically. The core system for Cortex should be fine, assuming that they don't try to get too specific about the functions of powers (i.e. a fire blast should work exactly the same as a cold blast)

Yeah, I have the core book, and the system is pretty adaptable. I will admit that I didn't understand the smallville book as much until I read the cortex corebook. Never had the opportunity to play the system though.

Keep in mind that Cortex+ is not what's used for Serenity. Very narrowly focused versions of it have been tailored for Smallville and Leverage. While ostensibly Smallville involves superheros, it's actually more of a soap opera and the version of Cortex+ used for it reflects that fact. My gut feeling is that something closer to Leverage will be used for the Marvel game (and will be a good fit IMO).

I've never played/seen the Leverage version, I'd be very interested to see how its done. I think because social interactions are so intense and relevant to everything in the Marvel Universe that Cortex+ is genuinely a better fit. I haven't gotten that deep into M&M3, but from the sheets I've seen, social leverage and relationships isn't a big thing. Of course, I haven't seen the Leverage system either, so maybe social stuff isn't as big an issue... but then again, watching the show...

Welcome to the board.
I hope you can find this board helpful, because this is the longest running active MURPG board I've ever seen, and had some of the longest running MURPG campaigns. You could poll the board to check scenario interest sometime too check interest in upcoming adventure supplements. This is the largest comic book roleplaying community I've found on the internet, and could be used as a resource too make games that fans would enjoy.
