Oh, but then I'd also have to buy an iPad, so nevermind.

Oh, snap, I hadn't thought of how good an iPad would be for that. It could consolidate a whole shelf of gaming books.

I have gotten to a point with pdfs where I'm seriously considering an external hard drive.

External HDs are cheap as dirt these days. And tiny, and portable. I bought a 300 gig HD a few years ago when it was on sale for $130 or something. It was a steal at the time. Now my friend has one that is 500 gigs, is about 5% the size, and I think it ran her about $80. U_U'
Damn you, technology.

Well, I did a little more research on the setting, and it looks like they're reviving an old setting that was never directly associated with D&D. What this sounds like, to me, is Wizards toying around with the idea of 4E d20 Modern/Future kind of deal. It's post-apocalyptic dystopia, but in a different sense than what I gather Dark Sun is; this would be the setting to use if you wanted to play a Tank Girl d20 game or maybe Zardoz.

Let me again pimp my current favorite thing going on with 4th Ed right now: Amethyst. www.diasexmachina.com/Games-Amethyst.htmIt is a very interesting, well done, and fleshed out take on a Modern/Future/Fantasy postapocalypse.

And now for the dissenting opinion; Amethyst sucks.
Anyway, Gamma World... yes. Gamma World has been around forever. And by forever I mean about 30 years, give or take half a decade. I bought (used) the original TSR Games Gamma World boxed set for 5$ when I was 13 or 14 years old. Back in the day, TSR put out tons of these one-shot boxed games. Ones that sold really well would get expansions, Gamma World being one of them. Sometimes they relied on something similar to D&D style mechanics, more often they did not.
Pseudo-related, Wizards WILL be putting out a 4E "Modern" game, with expansions for various settings (future, post-apoc, all the good stuff... there's even potential for a modern horror game that I think has all kinds of potential). The only question is how quickly they'll rush it out the door, and whether they'll support it fully (as they do D&D 4), or half-assed (as they do Star Wars Saga). There is no question that this product will appear. One of the things in consideration is tying this new "multi-verse" into the "HeroScape" game that Wizards put out a while back.

Heh, now are you saying Amethyst sucks cause you've checked it out, or because you like being a Mary-Mary-quite-contrary and messing with me?

Do you think that Gamma World will be a test-run for the basic Modern rules? It'd be nice to see what they have for a more contemporary setting, as I'm pretty sure 4E would make for a great Modern Fantasy setting. Also, Saga has been ended by Wizards (not sure if you heard about that one), as they didn't renew their contract. Sad to say, you'll have to change the tense to "as they did" instead of "as they do." On an unrelated note, I looked on Borders.com and apparently they just don't carry Scion books, which makes me terribly sad.

t-run for the basic Modern rules? I wouldn't be at all surprised. Thats what they did with SAGA for 4E. It seems to work for WotC. I hadn't heard, and it is sad, but I haven't bought any Saga SW products in forever anyway. My honest feeling is that they chose to focus on elements of the setting that for the most part, I actively dislike (basically; the "Jedi are super heroes and everybody else is just a dude" vision of Star Wars), and as much as I like the mechanics of Saga, I've never really had all that much fun running or playing it. I do think that its kind of a bummer, if only because WotC is probably the only gaming company out there that could afford a Star Wars license, so for the forseeable future, a Star Wars RPG is just out of the question. On the other hand, it means at GenCon 2011, I'll be able to buy up Saga books for a song.
