My current favorite RPG is Eclipse Phase. Hard sci-fi with major transhuman and dystopian elements. Also plenty of mystery and creeping horror. www.eclipsephase.com. The creators released the game with a Creative Commons license and they encourage you do torrent the core rule book. They know after you become mesmerized with the setting you'll buy the 50 dollar hard back.

Flying an F-16 is simplistic next to Shadowrun... ;D One fast way to see who in a room has played Shadowrun. Describe it as a rule light system that encourages role play over dice rolling. . . . then dodge the bottles and food items tossed at your head. . . . If you can get through character creation it is pretty fun though. Pro-tip: Play Shadowrun's setting with BESM 3rd edition rules, for a fun action game. Use GURPS system for a gritty "life is cheap" feel

Still love Shadowrun . Character creation takes forever, which is a major downside. Also Shadowrun slows down in combat which is where most other games speed up. The trick to appreciating it is thinking of it more like bullet-time. The combat rounds in Shadowrun take up 3 seconds. A LOT can happen in 3 seconds when a bunch of cybernetically-enhanced gunmen are involved. Also, Shadowrun is the first system in which I ever seriously played a magic user. The system for magic is better than D&D's ever was (Casting something once per day is DUMB) and mages end up feeling more balanced. There's a paper-rock scissor type system going on though, and it's important to understand that it's actually a pretty lethal system. You want to take character creation (All 6 hours of it) seriously because you can get killed a lot quicker. Once you fight through character creation and understand the rules that will govern YOUR character (You don't have to learn the rules for everything, just how your character is supposed to work, which is barely more complex than MURPG), then you stand a good chance of enjoying yourself. Character creation also doesn't take the same amount of time for every character. A mage can be built pretty quickly because they're actually kinda simple. A merc who is heavily enhanced will take much longer because they have a lot more making them tick. I've never made a hacker, but I got enough of a taste to know that it gets cumbersome. Other characters can take more or less time depending on how much you want to fine-tune them. Having someone who is experienced will streamline the process a lot. Our GMs for Shadowrun almost always work through character creation with us or just take our concept and make it happen in their own time when they get it. You can opt to play a very simple character (I always did), but for it to be EFFECTIVE at their simple task you end up including a LOT of very small things.

I end up favorably disposed to the company from moment one, and some of these are downright awesome. Spirit of the Century does the same thing, and it is made of pure awesome.
