I had a conversation with a coworker once who insisted that he doesn't listen to country under any circumstances. I said I felt sorry for him for missing out on Johnny Cash, to which he replied "Johny Cash isn't country. I like Johnny Cash." After some probing I figured out that his definition of "country" was "country music that I don't like". Country songs that he liked were "rock".

There's a time and a place for music that lets us examine our darkness, and there's a time and a place for music that reminds us that that's not all there is to life. I'm just going to say this: I love my angry music (not necessarily Goth, but still), and I love most country (both old-school and the modern twists on the genre). Sometimes I love some Hip-Hop, or some horrible 80's-90's Rap (and yeah, even some of the modern rap). Classic Rock, Modern Rock, and a smattering of what I can only call "Alternative" music from the 90's when I was growing up (Because we had to have our own era/genre/name I guess). The only insturment I find offensive is the accordian, but truth be told I've heard a song or two where I not only tolerated it's presence but even liked the song in question. This quote here, by WK, I've copied and saved... because I think it sums up my take on music perfectly. WK, you spoke to me there! I may share that with my kids someday, if and when they ever appear.

The only insturment I find offensive is the accordian, but truth be told I've heard a song or two where I not only tolerated it's presence but even liked the song in question. When I was in New Orleans there were a few bands that were a few really good bands with fiddle's banjo's, mandolins, and accordion’s that sounded pretty good. My grandmother played the accordion, and I used to hate when she would play it. After I visited New Orleans I realized that alone the instrument kind of sucks, but if it's played in the right band with the right instruments it can sound pretty good. I just kind of feel bad about making fun of her for playing it now that she’s dead and all, and she died before I got a chance to actually learn why she played the accordion. I said I felt sorry for him for missing out on Johnny Cash, to which he replied "Johny Cash isn't country. I like Johnny Cash." After some probing I figured out that his definition of "country" was "country music that I don't like". Country songs that he liked were "rock". Johnny Cash is an exception to country. Most country artist do listen to other Genre’s, but Johnny Cash was inducted both the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. He even coved Nine Inch Nails, which is pretty damn cool because he was an old artist whenever he did it, and to cover what would be a newer band (at least compared to him) meant that he not only liked the music, but liked it enough to cover their music. I think that’s pretty damn cool. Even if you completely hate country it's still okay to listen to Johnny Cash for that very reason. Travis Tritt also covered Take it Easy by the Eagles, but there wasn’t as big of a generational gap there.

*doesn't tell FBomb that they play The Eagles on country radio, and have been for nearly 30 years, as it appears that it might break his little heart*
The argument that Cash isn't country has some merit. It's wrong, but it has some merit. It's one of those arguments that you can make, even though you're ultimately splitting hairs. Johnny Cash toured with Elvis and Buddy Holly, and other big rock acts of that era. He didn't come to be solidly identified as "country" until later in his career, when rock 'n roll moved further away from rockabilly, etc.
The real deal is that Johnny Cash isn't just country. I love his version of Hurt (actually a lot more than the NIN version).

Yeah, what I was driving at is that I appreciate that the differences between one genre and another are ultimately open to individual interpretation - but sorting songs into one genre or another based on whether you like them or not is doing it backwards.
I don't even know how I'd sort some of the stuff I listen to, so I usually don't bother.
And yes, Cash's version of Hurt is the definitive version, IMO.

You know, if you were just a little more open-minded, you'd understand that labeling stuff based on whether or not you like it is easy

Johnny cash is good. country = not good (in my opinon) emo = not good (in my, and 80% of earth's population's opinion) ...and Trivium (my fav band) = greatness (because ya cant go wrong with metal )

In my experience, you can easily go wrong with metal. Pretty much everything under the labels death-, speed-, black-, etc etc etc, as well as 99% of all Christian metal.
And don't even get me started on rap-metal, industrial metal, and all related crapola.

I concur Christ Metal Sucks And don't even get me started on rap-metal, industrial metal, and all related crapola. Speaking as a Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine Fan I respectfully disagree. I'm going to chalk that up to personal pregerence.

Hey, Rage Against the Machine, the band that proves my point precisely. Rap-metal sucks sweaty nutsack! At any rate, I never said that Christian Metal sucks. I said the majority of it sucks, and the reason for that is pretty simple; metal is about being angry, and Christianity shouldn't be

I tend to get turned off by any extreme example of a genre, but some are more hit-and-miss for me than others. Metal is one of them. I hesitate to call dubstep a genre.
Vaguely related: I love this remixed VW commercial.

I think most genres are hit-or-miss with me. The exceptions are those genres that I just don't like at all (for instance Jazz. I've never heard anything that was referred to as Jazz that I didn't dislike).

Summertime, Miles Davis Round Midnight Thelonious Monk (on piano, with Charlie Rouse on sax) Take 5, Dave Brubeck Quartet West End Blues, Louis Armstrong. This clip is from Ken Burns' Jazz series; I set the link up so that it starts at the part of the clip that plays the song. The video is incredible; takes you back almost a full century. Does any of that likable? ~TWF

It might, but I have no sound on my computer till I can get a new one come tax time (But I am looking for them on youtube, from whence I can convert them to MP3s and put them on my MP3 player) Also; I liked Thelonius Monk better when I thought his name was Felonius Monk.

Har! His middle name is "Sphere"; does that make up for it? ^__^
Thelonious Monk is my favourite jazz musician. He was so quirky. I love watching footage of him playing; he hit the keys like he was putting them back in place where they belong, and sometimes he'd get up and spin around for no reason and then sit back down again. He fidgets with his feet like a kid trying very hard to behave at the dinner table. And the hats. He always had great hats.
