Chris Leeds was an upcoming modern novelist with an already dedicated group of fans. His most popular series was about a private investigator in 1880's San Francisco. It was a strange kind of Maltese Falcon meets Lonesome Dove meets Fight Club genre that includes moments of surreal ultra-violence and an unflinching eye for history accuracy. A fan favorite recurring character was Dapper Dan MCQual, a vicious Irish mafia thug that put on a vain air of social sophistication. When Leads mentioned in an interview that he would kill off Dapper Dan in his next novel a crazed fan hunted him down. The fan shot Leeds in the head outside his apartment building.
The bullet past through a 'non-critical' section of Leeds' brain. Though it didn't kill him, Leeds was left in a coma for three weeks. When he awoke, Leeds was no longer himself, but his own character Dapper Dan McQual. The trauma and brain damage had caused Leeds to be subsumed by this dark personality.
Dapper Dan is a savage, murderous thug that enjoys inflicting pain on those weaker than himself. To cover his low Irish immigrant back ground Dan affects an air of genial sophistication. He keeps a slick, keen appearance wearing a black bowler and fashionable waist coats. He walks with foppish black ash cane which he regularly uses to beat victims. Chris Leeds had kept himself in peak condition and had learned many thieving and fighting skills to help better his writing. As such, Dapper Dan reaps the benefits of that conditioning.
He encountered most likely leading a group street thugs or even mafia soldiers. Dapper Dan fights with few scruples and takes a certain glee with whipping out his antique razor blade.
