So I'm super late to the party, but I watched Solo last night with friends.
It was... kind of good?
That's probably my very low expectations talking, and don't get me wrong, the movie has some major problems - but there's the promise of a decent movie in there.
My primary issue with the movie is just the fact that it's a Han Solo prequel-thingy. Rather than an original story in one of the coolest fictional settings, this felt like little more than a checklist of Han Solo character features.
☑ gold dice
☑ that pistol
☑ meets Chewie
☑ Lando Calrissian
☑ wins Falcon in card game
☑ Kessel run in 12 parsecs
☑ Jabba the Hutt
So, what, everything that makes him Han Solo happened in like one weekend? He did sort of have a character arc, but we knew roughly where he'd wind up: a bit more cynical, but a bit wiser. The story just kept getting jerked around, setting up some neat characters, settings, and ideas, only to be forced in a predictable direction in service of the almighty checklist.
Also, the colour grading was exactly as bad as I was led to believe. It's almost as distractingly bad as Superman's blurry lip, but not nearly as entertaining.
Now, getting to the good stuff, some of the set pieces were pretty dope. As much as I have complained about why there would be a train in Star Wars, that sequence was neat. Basically every setting was interesting, except maybe the space battle with the giant hentai monster thingy. Basically the more practical stuff was good, whereas the more CGI-intensive stuff felt a little flat by comparison.
I'm sure it's a bone of contention for some, but I liked L3. She grew on me. Woody did a great job carrying a lot of the film's weight, and in general the supporting cast was good. The costumes were all pretty excellent. I didn't pay too much attention to the sound design (we were talking a lot, heh) but it seemed fine.
Also NO FORCE OR JEDI OR LIGHTSABERS THANK YOU OMG I am sick of those things.
tl;dr It's a shame the movie did so poorly, because I think there was potential here to tell a really kickass story with original characters. Disney went a little overboard saturating fans with Star Wars crap, and probably could have been a lot more ambitious at the same time: quality over quantity would have helped a lot. Alas.
