How is it? Are the special dice something cool or just a gimmick? I haven't had a chance to playtest it yet, but the mechanics seem good enough. It's definitely aimed at a cinematic take, rather than a more tactical one. I like that in theory, but can't say how it actually works out at the table. Some of the mechanics seem like they might be clunky and slow down the action until everybody playing is really familiar. One thing I'm unhappy with is the way they're releasing the books. There are going to be 3 different core books. The one currently available as a Beta Test (for $50!) is for playing fringe types (smugglers, bounty hunters, etc). The second one is going to give rules for playing members of the Rebel Alliance, and the third, which isn't due out for a long time, will finally reveal full blow Jedi. I'm not that bothered by them holding off on releasing the Jedi stuff... one thing that irritates me about most Star Wars RPGs is how they're entirely Jedi-centric, making any player who plays anyone without Force Powers a complete fool who will spend most of his time wishing he hadn't... But having to buy well over $100 for books just to get the core materials seems excessive, as does the wait time between releases. You asked about the dice; sadly, again, I can't really say, because I haven't played it yet. Largely it's just using symbols instead of numbers to represent various things. The core mechanic seems sound, and you can use normal dice with numerals on them. There's a little reference chart to tell you which numbers correspond to what results, and as with the DC Universe RPG a few years ago, I suspect that players would get familiar with the conversion very quickly.

I'm ok with cinematics on a Star Wars game, the release plan does sound really really really silly, and yes the whole "Go Jedi or go home" thing sucks. The character creation process allows for some freedom or is more class oriented?

The character creation process allows for some freedom or is more class oriented? Oh, good question. So basically after you pick your Species, you get a certain amount of XP (presumably this amount is different because some Species are inherently more powerful than others, and thus get less XP to customize with...) and pick a Profession. Buying skills and talents within your profession is cheaper, but you can buy any skill and any talent for which you qualify, if you want to spend the XP. In all, I'd say it's very "open", but not completely free form like, say, MURPG.

Oh, sounds very nice, my group will probably pick it up as soon as FFG clears up their release schedule.

Uh...I heard of this game, but I'm a little iffy on whether I'm going to spend money to get it. Mostly the money they seem to be asking, and the fact that you need to get several books just for the core material. Granted I'm dumb enough to get nWoD, Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage but I think that's different than this. You didn't need them all to play it. I might be willing to give it a shot if someone decided to play it here, but I don't think I'm going to buy it.

I totally understand what you're saying, the release setup is crazy, as is the amount of money to get everything. I doubt I'll be buying all of it, either. That said, however, you don't have to buy all of them to play the game, I guess. Each book just covers different areas of the Universe. For instance, the Edge of the Empire book has the basic rules for the Force and the lightsaber in the equipment section, it just doesn't have the Jedi Talent trees, etc.

I'm very sick at the moment, so I apologize if my question seems dumb, but I'm unable to think straight right now.
I have the D20 and the Saga version of the Star Wars RPG... does the Fantasy Flight one seems better than those?

I have the D20 and the Saga version of the Star Wars RPG... does the Fantasy Flight one seems better than those? What do you want in a Star Wars game? If you want tactical combat and a Force-centric rules set that makes force users clearly superior to non-Force Users in every way, then stick with d20. If you prefer more of narrative, cinematic abstraction where the Force is just one of many ways to accomplish any given goal, then yes, it's better. Also, sorry to hear that you're still sick hoss. I've got a little bug myself but nothing like what it sounds like you're going through.

I might be willing to give it a shot if someone decided to play it here, but I don't think I'm going to buy it. I don't see that happening here. Not well, anyway. There's too much "back and fort" required for action resolution.

One of my favorite concepts is bounty hunter... ^_^ I dunno... maybe I'm just a weakling when it comes to being sick. I mean, it's just influenza... Yet I've got no energy, my senses are all messed up (and it feels like my Intelligence dropped 75%) and whenever I swallow anything (including saliva), it hurts like crazy. Let me tell you you become VERY aware of how often you swallow your saliva in a minute when that happens. But enough about me. Back to Star Wars, lol. ;D Is there a lot of difference between the various species you've seen so far, as far as you can tell?

Is there a lot of difference between the various species you've seen so far, as far as you can tell? Haven't gotten there yet. I expect they'll be roughly as "different" as they have been in every other Star Wars RPG. Most guys (myself definitely included) are wimps when we're sick, btw. Travis makes us all look bad by working 40 hours while sick.

I guess that book series is the next one I'll get. I'm curious now. ^_^ And, thanks. Glad to know I'm not the only sick wimp around, lol.

I'm currently reading a cool tidbit called "Obligation" Every player character has an Obligation of some sort that complicates their life. The obvious example of this would be Han owing Jabba money, but I suspect that things like Luke's sense of duty to his Uncle Owen would also qualify. It's a pretty neat mechanic.
