In a room made of metal, on a single bed sat a teenage girl, arms wrapped around her knees as she looked around. It was funny to her in a cruel way, this room which to some would seem like a prison cell was one of the warmest and wonderful places she had ever been. It was only a few days since Serita had been liberated from her former life. The metal door to her room slid open like something you'd see in a sci-fi movie, walking into the room was one of her saviors, a woman who had skin blue like a blueberry and hair as red as roses. "You're up, that's surprising" she said with while looking at Serita with her otherworldly yellow eyes. Serita just looked at her and nodded slightly. Mystique narrowed her gaze and walked closer to Serita, checking the various bandages on the mutant girl, changing one of them. Silence permeated the air before it was broken by Serita, "T-thank you" she said to Mystique, whom stopped while she was wrapping up the girl's arm. "How did you end up with the cartel?" Serita looked at Mystique for a moment, recalling the events which lead her to where she was. "We do not get a choice in the life we are born into. Some are lucky and are born into a loving family and are able to have normal and happy lives, but for some like myself, it was never an option.. I was born in a little town in Mexico. It was always invaded by the cartels, riddled with gang violence. The shouting of men and firing of guns were my childhood lullaby. For most of my childhood, my mother was able to keep us out of the gang violence, we were invisible to the cartel while other families were torn apart and destroyed. My abuelita, my grandmother raised me for majority of my free life. She taught me to cook, clean, sew; domestic skills women from her generation would have learned and passed down to their children and so on. Things were relatively good for a time. That was until my mother brought home the reason why we had been able to enjoy an immunity from the cartel's influence. Jorge was his name, he was a cartel drug runner with some pull within the ranks, enough so that he was able to keep his girl and her family from being messed with, as long as he got what he wanted from my mother that was..."
Serita twiddled with her hands while she pasued to collect her words. "One day, Jorge didn't find my mother as fun as he once did. He wanted something more from her.." her words began to tremble a little before continuing, though it was clear on Mystique's face, she knew where the tale was going. "He came into my room that night.." she stopped before taking a deep breath, "it hurt.. no one ever warned me that it would feel like that. He wouldn't get off of me even when I screamed.." Serita stopped. "My grandmother was the one who stopped him. She pushed him off and tried to beat him while he was down but he overpowered her and like that..he killed her." "My mom was there and she knew what was going on, she arranged for it to happen, she arranged for her daughter to be scarified for her own safety."
"It wasnt much longer after that, Jorge got tired of me and since my mother didn't want to suffer, she allowed him to put me with the herd." she continued, "the herd is what they called their group of prisoners, their collection of flesh that they traded for whatever or whoever they needed." "I found myself getting passed around. Bouncing from person to person like a piece of property, being used and tormented if I resisted. In that place, I was alone, until I met a friend. Her name was Lucinda, she was a girl who got taken when she was lured off one of the resorts and taken into the trade. She couldn't have been any older than eight at the time. All she wanted was her daddy, she cried for awhile until they made it so she couldn't scream again." Serita looked at Mystique who looked at her with a bit of sympathy, as if she knew what it felt like to go through life as she did. "Time went by and I helped Lucinda. I didn't have to help the girl, but I knew that it was a lot for anyone to handle. Others came to help her the best they could among the herd, the older ones tried to help and keep everyone from falling too far into despair. Not everyone could be saved. There were some who took their own lives to end the suffering while others had been so broken and beaten that they were already dead."
"Time went by and before I knew it I noticed a change. I had made a rift for the first time when I defended myself from a crazier captive. The cartel took quick note of that and pulled me from the herd and sent me to the head of the operation. He pushed me to find out how well I could make rifts and like everything else, found a use for one of his prisoners. I was turned into a transporter for the operations. They used me to make portals between hideouts and various other places within my range. I made their operations run smoother than ever." Serita stopped for a moment while Mystique asked, "Why did you not try and resist?" She looked down and then back at her, "I did once" she answered. "I refused to make a portal and they tied me up. They beat me within a inch of my life and brought Lucinda in. They made me watch as they cut her piece by piece until I did what they wanted."
Serita's eyes began to water. "They saw her as damaged goods after they cut her up and they ended her life, throwing her away like trash.." "I knew that I had to do what they said in order to keep them from killing me next.. " She composed herself, wiping away her tears and a cold expression rising from beneath the surface. "Eventually my opportunity came in an unexpected way. While trying to make a rift for one of the drug runners, I made a knife instead. I don't know how or why but that knife was a key to my freedom and I didn't hesitate to leave." "The cartel soldiers I faced found themselves displaced from my path. I cut a path to my freedom and was able to open a rift but before I could run more soldiers blocked my path. " A small pause filled the air, "Thats when you and the others showed up." "I don't know why you all showed up when you did, but thanks to you all, that cartel branch was destroyed. Most of those people were saved but there were many that were killed once the cartel knew they were done fore and wanted to take out as many of us as possible." "I thought that it would be a relief to make it out from that hell but I know if I had learned to use my rifts better, I may have been able to save some of those people, people like Lucinda."
"You can't save everyone" Mystique said coldly as she finished changing Serita's bandages. "The best you can do is to survive to fight another day" she continued, discarding the soiled bandages and heading towards the door. "Though now that you're here, you can help us bring an end to people like us being abused by the humans. You have a great power that can be used to help a lot of people and our crew so happens happens to help mutants everywhere." "If decide to stay, you'll be able to keep a lot of people from suffering the same fate your friend endured." The door slid open as she turned around, her back to Serita and proceeded to walk out "Think about it." Serita looked at the door as it closed and thought about what Mystique said to her
