Had an odd idea for an adventure (meant to be used within the context of a larger, cosmic scale, heralds of Galactus level campaign).
The PC's encounter a race whose entire economy is dependent on a clean burning energy source. They use it for fuel, electricity, interstellar propolsion, and manufacture of goods. It has been found to be so useful that they have become dependent on it. Their supply is running out, and now they have to send off an expedition to get more. These expeditions bring in enough to keep a planet supplied for 50 years (using this, each planet in their system is now inhabitable/ed), which is fortunate as they only have one shot per generation. The locals speak of a asteroid cloud that passes by their system. They discovered the usefullness of this substance found on the asteroids when, by accident, one of them crashed onto their planet a hundred generations ago.
Well, now it's time for another expedition but they need the help of the PC's. Perhaps another race discovered this supply and there isn't enough for both species. Whatever the reason, they go. They get on some solar sail vessels (used so that the full supply of the substance makes it back rather than being used as fuel) and take off. The "sailors" on this vessel are grim. They know they have but one chance to do this, or be disgraced forever *. As we get closer to the meeting place, the crew becomes more disgruntled. Fights break out. For a couple of days before the asteroids are sighted, everything gets real quiet.
After weeks in space, we spot the asteroid cloud. The asteroids appear to be caught in one anothers gravitational fields, and are spiraling around in pairs and triads. Some are crashing into each other (resulting in one of them being smashed). Others are in perfect sink, with dust clouds between them. This whole time these have been being called "asteroids", but they are more like planets. Each the size of Jupiter, only with rocky protrusions instead of being gasseous.
The captain pulls the ship into the path, lines up on one of the stable pairs, and lashes the ship to the one with the larger gravitational pull. Anyone with an ability to sense life forms (any ability) finds that they are sensing something, familiar. They will swear it isn't life, but they know they've felt it before. (Figure on a difficulty of 2 or 3, but a resistance of 10,000+, like the defenses on a gods treasure chest). When they meet the resistance, they will realize that the thing they are detecting is the life force of the planetoids around them.
While they are reaching this conclusion, the pcs should be helping to dig through the layers of rock, to get to the fluid pockets inside. During this time they will be attacked. (If there was another race pursueing this, then it is by one of their crews, if not, then a mutiny has started).
I'll post more as it occurs to me.
For further purposes the timeframe may have to be changed. More times per lifetime.
