So, here we are! A new game is starting, and I've decided that I want to play the legendary
Wolverine[/color]. The GM has decided that I can be a Tier 5 character, and so I have been given 50 stones + 10 challenges to work with.
The GM has approved of my concept, so I'm going to go through each phase of character creation individually:
ChallengesNot everybody starts here - even I sometimes leave Challenges to the end - but it's often helpful to know exactly how many stones you're working with before you get started. Besides, if you've completed your character concept in advance, picking Challenges is pretty easy.
I'm limited to 10, so I choose:
Mutant (3 white)
- Obviously, Logan is a mutant, which ain't an easy gig in the Marvel Universe.
Haunted Past (2 white)
- Logan doesn't remember everything about his past, but what he does remember is pretty messed up.
Psychological (3 white)
- Logan suffers from severe retrograde amnesia: he can't remember the majority of his past. He isn't even sure how old he is. This troubles him greatly; uncovering his past is often one of his biggest motivations.
Deadly Enemies (2 white)
- Though he may not always remember them, they remember him. Wolverine has built up a selection of personal enemies over his day, but he can usually handle them when he has to.
That's 10 stones right there - perfect!. That means I can spend a total of 60 stones on my CAD. If I really tried I could probably squeeze out two more stones, but for now I'll move on to:
AbilitiesLet's consider this character's abilities. Wolverine is no genius, but he's a wily and clever guy with a lot of experience, so let's put down Int 3.Int 3 (1 white)
He's stronger and more agile than any normal human, but he isn't particularly fast. So we put down:Str 4 (2 white)
Agi 4 (2 white)
Spd 2 (2 red)
Next, we deal with health and energy. In the old system, this was all determined by Durability. This was a clunky way of building a character, and so to manage we used to rely on Modifiers such as Energy Battery or Deep Reserves - Fortunately, that's no longer necessary. Energy Recovery and Energy Pool each get their own Ability. Instead of paying a cost of Durability x3, each of these 3 Abilities is worth x1.
First, let's deal with health. Wolverine can take a lot of punishment, he's full of energy, and he rarely runs out of gas. All of these Abilities are superhuman, so I'm looking at a minimum of 4 for all of them. I decide to go with:Durability 4 (2 white)
Recovery 5 (3 white)
Pool 5 (3 white)
In total, my Abilities look like this:Int 3 (1 white)
Str 4 (2 white)
Agi 4 (2 white)
Spd 2 (2 red)
Durability 4 (2 white)
Recovery 5 (3 white)
Pool 5 (3 white)
That adds up to 13 white and 2 red. Ouch, that's a lot! Now it's time to buy some:ActionsSo, what do we know about Wolverine's training and experience? Well, he's had some awesome Black Ops training due to years of experience and specific training as part of the Weapon X program. Let's build him a version of the Special Training Action and call it "Black Ops".He also has serious training in close combat. He's way better than even your average black belt, but he's not as disciplined or well trained as someone like Captain America. A good middle-of-the-road AN, like 5, is probably a good idea. He also has some talent with ranged combat, but let's face it: he'd rather use those claws. His social skills aren't anything to write home about, and in particular he should have some intimidating specialties. In the end, I put down:
Acrobatics 2 (2 red)
[Agility bonus]
Black Ops 6 (6 white)
- ambushes
- covert ops
- infiltration and exfiltration
- surveillance
- survival
- tracking
Combat, Close 5 (3 white)
[Strength bonus]
- claws!
- X-Men multi-style
- Weapon X training
- kendo
- going berzerk
Combat, Ranged 2 (2 red)
[Weapon bonus]
- handguns
- thrown weapons
Social Skills 4 (2 white)
- intimidation
- Japanese culture
- military protocol
- streetwise
Vehicle Operation 3 (1 white)
- light vehicles
- motorcycles
- the Blackbird
Looks pretty good to me! I've spent 13 white and 1 red. That's a total of 27 white spent, leaving me with 33 to go. This should be no problem! Lastly, I'm on to:ModifiersThe first thing that comes to mind is Wolverine's famous claws. They're big and razor sharp, so a Modifier of 3 sounds good. This means that Wolverine's average output in Close Combat will be 8 stones (his recovery is 5 and his modifier is 3). That's pretty solid!
To make these claws I'll have to use the Generic Modifier template. It's just a modifier to Close Combat, so it looks as though the cost will be MN + 3 CL. They're also made of adamantium, which is a Class 4 Material. This costs an extra +1 CL, plus an additional 5 white stones. With all that settled, I record:Claws 3 (6 white + 5 white)
- modifies Close Combat
- adamantium (Material Class 4)
Wolverine's other most obvious Modifier is his healing factor. He heals fairly quickly, so Advanced sounds about right. This has a base cost of 7 cost levels, or 6 white stones. But Wolverine is also able to reconstruct himself even when he's been reduced to pretty much just his skeleton, and that sounds like the new Reconstitute Self option. Thus, even if his flesh is totally vaporized, he'll be back to normal if you just give him a few minutes. That bumps the cost up to CL 8, or 9 white stones.I jot that down, along with a few extras. In total, it looks like this:Adamantium Skeleton (3 white)
Animal Senses 6 (4 white)
Claws 3 (6 white + 5 white)
- modifies Close Combat
- adamantium (Material Class 4)
Defense, Mental 1 (1 red)
Healing Factor, Advanced (9 white)
- reconstitute self
Reflexive Dodge 2 (3 white)
Toughness 1 (2 white)
Wealth 2 (2 red)
This adds up to 33 white! Combined with the 27 I already spent, I end up with 60 stones spent. Perfect! Lastly, I jot down some important details such as name and age, and then GM gives me some free equipment - then I'm ready to go. The final draft looks like this:========================================
