I'm watching Series 7 right now, and decided to check out the wikipedia article for it, which led me to the wikipedia article for Battle Royale. I've heard of this movie before and wanted to see it, but I haven't yet. What I'm wondering is, since this movie has never had a distribution deal in the U.S, is there any way to see it with English subtitles or dubbing? I don't speak remotely enough Japanese to follow the movie in it

How about right here? Not the best quality ever, but it's something. I should probably watch this too, though I still can't look at Beat Takeshi and not see Vic Romano from MXC. ^__^ That, or I'm immediately reminded of the impressions the guys from Gaki no Tsukai do of him. I'll have to find a clip.. ~TWF

I don't know what came first, but I'm talking about the movie. The guy that did the movie worked in an ammunition factory at the age of 15 during WWII. He was forced to take cover under the bodies of his dead comrades during a raid on the factory, and then told to clean up the bodies... and then went on to discover all of the lies that the government had told the people to get them to back the war in the first place.
So... yeah. If anybody has a grip on how children can be used and abused by the system, its him. I'm fine with the ultra-violence (not that I'd let my kids watch it or anything), and the theme doesn't bother me because the theme is not "hey, look how cool it is that we do these awful things!"... its "hey, maybe we should think a little harder about the stuff we subject our children to" and/or "hey kids, be careful who you trust. Just because someone is 'an adult' doesn't make them trustworthy."
Now I just wish somebody would do a similar movie to educate people about to enter college that the same holds true of their college professors and the ideals they preach from their pulpit... err, sorry "podium"
