Vincent Carmichael was a good cop. He had a loving wife, two-point-five kids, and everything he could possibly want in life. Which made him the type of cop that was nigh impervious to bribery, extortion, or any other colors of shadey business that tends to corrupt such fine upstanding citizens. To his credit, even when his life was threatened, Vincent refused to given in to the temptation.
That steadfast resolve is what made significant enemies on the Force, and would eventually lead to him being framed for a triple homocide.
In the week leading up to the event, Vincent's youngest son (Deacon) had been getting in trouble frequently at school. Apparently the boy had become somewhat of an accompished liar, and had been caught in quite a web of lies that he'd spun to protect a number of his 'bad-egg' friends from getting in trouble.
In hopes of teaching his son the values of Integrity, he took him on a ride-along at work. He wanted to show him that honesty, and hard work, were the only values that mattered. That doing the Right Thing, was better than the wrong thing... even if for what seemed like the Right Reasons.
And so it was, that young Deacon, became sole witness to the Triple Homocide. The only living innocent to witness the threats, to see the deaths, and know in his heart that his father was innocent of the charges laid by his colleagues as they arrested him.
Deacon's testimony was for naught. He was an over-imaginative kid, who had been with his father that day because he'd been making up lies to protect friends~ Of course he'd do the same to save his murderous father. The prosocution claimed that's even why he'd actually chosen to bring Deacon along that day.
Vincent was found guilty, and sentenced.
Outside the courtroom, Deacon was stopped by the cops responsible. They leered at him, and warned him to keep well clear of them or he'd end up like his father.
Angry, hurt, and above all ashamed, Deacon ran from the building. It was storming outside. Heavy downpoors would make visibility difficult on the best of days. Combined with tears and raw emotions, Deke was soon lost on streets he knew well. He vaguely recalled hearing his mothers voice as he ran, but didn't care.
He found himself in an alleyway, curled in a tight ball and sobbing. For how long, he had no idea.
It was the red light that broke his reverie. He looked up. Parked at the allways mouth was a police car, and two dark figures were walking towards him. One was Officer Standish. A face he knew well, a face he'd thought was amongst his fathers best of friends until recent events showed otherwise.
Deke stood up, defiance rising in him like an emotional tidal wave.
With balled fists he took a step forward, his shoes making an odd slurping noise as he moved through the viscous puddles lining the alleyway.
Standish was talking, but Deacon couldn't understand it. He couldn't hear anything above the loud rush of adrenaline and blood pumping through him. He lashed out, and hit Standish. To Deke's surprise the man dropped like a sack of potatoes. A man almost twice his weight, and much taller than he... down for the count.
Standish's partner rushed over, and Deacon dropped low into a sweeping kick motion he barely remembered from the martial arts classes he'd taken in middle school. That guy landed with a thud and splash of his own. He was still conscious though, and now reaching for a weapon. Deacon took off again, bolting now with speed and reserves he didn't understand (but wasn't questioning). He knew with sudden clarity precisely where he was, and the fastest way home.
A letter came in the mail a week later, informing Deke's mother of the incident. Saying that they'd let him walk this time, but next time he pulled a stunt like that~ they'd take him in. Greif or not, situations or not (them of course still claiming the innocense).
Over the next year, a number of changes occurred.
Deke began to notice that he was faster and stronger than he should be. Faster and stronger than he had any right to be. Another run in with Standish occurred, and this time he paid a little more attention to his fist as it connected with the drunken cops jaw~ it was different. Coated in a black material, and looking almost armored. It was amazing! As any young teen so discovering an inhuman ability... he began to experiment. To learn about it. He went to the library, and started doing research. Heroes, Villains.
News clips of one in particular seemed to spark something in him. More than that... the black stuff seemed to react to the videos! A villain, then hero(?), called Venom. Further experiments demonstrated that Deacon could even replicate some of the man's stunts!
As Deke was going through his own changes, so too was the rest of his family. Vincent Jr (Deacon's older brother), who was in college in California, disowned the entire family. Joanna (Deke's mother), who had been a simple high-school educated house-wife, had resulted to turning tricks to keep he household afloat. Deacon's younger sister spent more time at the babysitter's than with the family.
All in all, it was a tragic formula that lent considerable free time and autonomy to young Deacon's newfound abilities... and these abilities began to feed on his desire for Justice. His desire for Vengeance. The results of his research had planted seeds within him...
On his 18th birthday, Deacon withdrew from school (much to his mothers protest). He apologized, but said it was what he needed to do. She did not understand, and their last conversation was not pleasant in the least.
Deacon left. He moved into a flat down-town, and got a job as a janitor at the police station (where he has gone unnoticed, and remained under the radar... slowly gathering evidence and a list of names).
In the mean time, he uses leads found while working, to do vigilante work at night. Such activity offers him a chance to train, and do some good. Media attention has been thankfully sparse, which made it somewhat surprising when he was approached by Heroes For Hire. They seemed to know everything about him to boot. More, even, than he did (given they seemed familiar with the so-called 'infant-symbiote' empowering Deacon's vigilanteism).
