There's an annual gaming convention I usually try to go to about a half hour drive from home. Usually, I end up disappointed that I paid the entry fee. There tends to be a lot going on, with none of it involving me. (In that sense, it's much like Thanksgiving with my family, so I've gotten used to it.) But this year... This year's been.... Different.
THE GOOD
I played some Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and enjoyed it a lot. (Ryu and Morrigan... because Chun-Li is the only other character I know. I think they've got Mega Man, but I've never played him in anything but Mega Man 2, so, that doesn't really help.)
Also, side note, I found a rather evenly-matched opponent for Street Fighter.
I got some great humorous quotes to add to my quotes file.
I played a Military Engineer in a Star Wars Saga Edition one-shot. Building an autofire ion rifle out of scraps is pretty dang cool. Even if my other ideas all got shot down.
I revived my MURPG campain that had been DEAD for YEARS!!! Seriously, we joked about it being a dead campain (Yes, I spelled that correctly; it is very painful at times.) at the con last year, and possibly the year before that. I think our notes indicated that our previous session had been September 2008... or was it 2007?
I'm saner than I previously may have believed.
THE BAD
Friday night was fairly boring, which is usual. However, this year, scheduling problems resulted in us having rather limited (cramped) space until something else wrapped up.
I missed out on a Street Fighter Tournament to play in that Star Wars game, hoping that doing so would allow Star Wars to conclude before the Smash Bros Brawl tournament later in the evening. Not only did that not work out... Star Wars got cut short because the Con had to close for the night... at 1am.
I played some Arcade Mode in Super Street Fighter IV. After repeatedly being obliterated (except the time I got a perfect round, which got canceled out when he got a perfect against me), I switched to a character I'm generally better with. After he got beaten repeatedly... I finally decided to quit wasting my time on it. I don't actually know how long this process took, but I had a similar occurrence (ages ago) in which I spent literally over an hour and a half just fighting the same guy repeatedly until I finally had the luck to win two rounds in a row and finish the game.
Attempts to hold a Marvel vs Capcom 2 tournament were denied. Apparently they intend to have an MvC3 event after that comes out in a couple weeks, before anyone knows how to play the new characters that make up about a third of the roster.
I had already signed up for the Smash Bros event, so Star Wars got put on hold for a while while I lost out of Brawl even quicker than I could have guessed. I lost the first round so badly that when my opponent offered a "good game" handshake, I refused. I was rather irritated that my defeat had come so swiftly, especially because I'd done so well in Tatsunoko vs Capcom earlier. (Yes, I did better at a game I'd never played before than I did in a game I'd played more than most current games I own.) Right now, I'm not so mad that I lost, as much as I'm mad at myself for being jerk about it. I know I should have just accepted the handshake and been a good sport about the whole thing...
I attempted to transport my Monolith Playstation 3 in a paper grocery bag. This did not work out well. (PS3 is still fine, but the bag, not so much.)
After using my PS3 with a borrowed HDMI cable at the con, I couldn't get it to display when I went back to not having HDMI. The solution involved booting up the computer and searching the internet for about half an hour (including all the boot up time starting up the web browser which take longer than it probably should) until I found how to reset the display settings.
My con boots hurt my feet. That is why they were not worn for the second day of the con. (Before anyone comments about smelly feet, I wore normal shoes instead. Alright.)
The fact that I ever questioned my sanity to such an extent is still really sad.
THE UGLY
There's really only one thing left to mention about my experience with the con this year. When the time came to go home for the night, (which tends to be easy enough, and cheaper than a hotel) We got the car loaded up, shift into gear, and then it instantly DIES!! This is after at least three visits to mechanics (including one for which it had to be towed because it died on my way to work), and spending $400 trying to fix this occasional problem.
So... What to do... After attempting to convince her to start again, then cussing for several minutes, I did the best thing that came to mind. Call mom to pick me up, and sort out the rest later. Yes, having mom pick me up like I'm in frakking gradeschool!!!
Eventually, I got my car to start again, but Mom was already most of the way there... and I figured she may be useful to have nearby if I had engine problems AGAIN. So she finally gets there, and then turns around and follows me the whole way home. (Thankfully, there were no further problems. In this instance, I believe only God could keep my car running the whole way home. Logic and physics indicate it should keep running anyway, but considering my car's suicidal nature, I'm more inclined to believe this was an actual miracle.)
THE SHORT VERSION
There were a few little annoyances, but other than the automotive suicide (Yes, that's a car killing itself.) I've probably had more fun at the con this year than in all previous years combined. (Not bad considering I've got nametags from 5 previous years, and I doubt that's all of them.)
If I go back to the con for Sunday afternoon, I'm not taking my own car. I may try to borrow my Mom's car. (So I can feel like I'm in high school instead of grade school... Yay!) I've been home for about 2 hours, and the stress is mostly worn off now that I've typed up a rant about this crap. I barely feel like giving Seth (in Street Fighter) countless Seismic Hammers and Hadokens. (Yes, I probably misspelled the name of Ryu and Ken's projectile. No, I don't care. Because Fact: it's too early to care about much of anything right now.)
