Most custom material is unnecessary and will never see as much use as its creators might like.
As you say in the thread, you do it because you can.
It IS a little upsetting sometimes knowing it won't ever see much use though. Sometimes you really work at something and afterward you realize you're the only one who cared.
I looked over that point-buy class construction btw, I just saw someone doing something similar on another forum.
That's another thing about custom material, often someone else is doing the same thing. I built Force Golem and Nimblewright racial classes for D&D and then saw someone else had done the same, at least twice, and I had 2-3 useable versions of each as well.

So far this project represents a grand total of one shower's worth of thought, so I haven't invested anything of value yet, but as a general principle I agree.
On the other hand, I did a lot of work on D&D 3.5 (and now Pathfinder) that I use as consistent house rules, and I consider that stuff time well-spent.
