Story:
Coalheart came to awareness in a small octagonal house in the year 1883. A wizened old man hunched over him shaking a rattle over his face. "Someone has killed the son of our chief. I die so that I may bring you to protect the tribe, so such things do not happen again. You were heartless in life and you are a coal heart now. Do you swear to help our tribe?"
The younger man sat up confused, trying to think over a fierce burning pain in his chest and throat. "What am I doing here . . . ? Who are you?" faint lines of smoke escaped from his mouth as he spoke.
"Coal Heart you were a murderer in your last life, a protector in the one to come. The bear and hawk watch over you. You live because I paid for your life with my own. Do you swear?" The old man spoke with a pleading tone and his voice.
Coal was shocked over his emotions of empathy and sadness for the loss of the son that tore through him. He could not remember his past life, but somehow understood that this man was speaking the truth. Coal closed his eyes and felt them burn, he wanted to scream but instead he spoke in a low tone, "Yes, I swear I will protect the tribe. When the tribe is no more I will protect the memories. When the memories are no more, I will rest." The words felt rehearsed as though he knew exactly what to say.

Player Notes:
This presents an unusual opportunity to play a character that is not afraid of death. What gives this character depth and keeps him heroic is his limitations, in this case the duty and the desire to help the underdog should be played as more important than his own well being. This is the type of character who would abandon a fight he was winning if it means saving someone caught in the crossfire.
GM Notes:
If you see this character as a player within one of your games, keep an eye out to make sure he stays on top of his limitations. The character lacks mental defense which could give you a good trump card, but if you consistently use mental attacks against him it is likely that he will spend Exp on mental defense.
As an NPC
This could be a fun antagonist. He could be a relentless attacker appearing just hours after prior defeats. Players would need to use a combination of mental attacks and suppressing his teleport to gain lasting victories. Final victory would likely be won on a social front using information to play on his limitations.
He could be a fun mentor/benefactor for a team. If you wish to do this feel free to kick his Close and Ranged combat down a few notches to raise his wealth and knowledge.
If you want him to take a more active role in aiding PCs as a support character take his teleport to a higher level so that he could bring the team to important locations. You may also want swap teleport for the far more versatile magical travel if you him to fill this role.
You could also make him a great NPC sidekick by raising his enhanced dodge and giving him mental defense at the cost of his combat abilities. This would let him hold his own on defense while the hero saves the day.
